Genetically modified crops are grown around the world by approximately 17 million farmers, most of them in developing countries.
In Africa, seven countries either grow or import GMO crops. But Kenya has been engulfed in debate pertaining to their safety, following the lifting of a ban on the cultivation and importation of genetically modified crops and animal feed in response to a biting drought. In this episode of #TalkAfrica, it examines whether the adaptation of GMOs is the solution to the food crisis the continent is facing

Why is it always a white person invited to represent south Africa instead of the original Africans in issues concerning Africa. This needs to stop.

Because 99%of the farmers in SA are bazungus, so it's to be expected, in this case to be precise, and sadly they are the ones controlling the economy of the country. The black leadership is just a farce

Ruto should have had the courtesy of constituting a taskforce to look into GMO like he has done on other things. I feel so disrespected as a Kenyan. He never spoke about it during campaigns etc. The first thing he does as president BOOM

One thing people are not told is that the insects can eventually become resistant to the GMO* crop over time. In the case of BT maize become resistant to BT* toxin. Insect DNA is not the same as human DNA and is labile to mutations.

labile means "readily or frequently changing". I don't think insect DNA is more labile to mutation than human DNA. I think you are really trying to say that insects evolve more rapidly than humans, but that is because of their short lifetimes. That's true, but it is no more true of BT maize than of only other insect control method. ( In the United States, maize is called corn.) Let me give you an example. The same insect that BT maize tries to control was a problem before there were GMO crops, and farmers often, instead of using pesticides, tried the trick of switching between corn and soybeans in successive years. The idea is that the corn rootworm, when it becomes an adult (moth) would lay its eggs in the cornfield, which was then used the next year to grow soybeans, which the corn rootworm couldn't eat. Then after the soybean field was used, the next year it would have hardly any rootworm larvae, and corn planted in that field the next year, it would have less rootworms. So what happened. Very quickly the rootworm population evolved a new trait. The rootworm adult moth would lay its eggs in a soybean field, which would be a cornfield in the following year. Any technique to control agricultural pests, whether using the newest biotechnology or the oldest methods like spotting the bugs and squashing them, will eventually fail to work effectively. I also object to the statement "One thing people are not told is that the insects can eventually become resistant to the GMO* crop over time." Telling this to farmers more than it does telling it to anyone else, and the farmers ARE told to plant Bt maize in a field with also some traditional Bt-free maize, specifically to slow down the evolution of Bt-maize resistant corn. The Bt corn seeds are sold to farmers in large bags which contain a mixture of both kinds of seeds.

Someone tell President of Kenya William Samoei Ruto that Kenyans are not ready for GMO Food .Therefore Kenyans want to continue using Organic food however if Mr Ruto's government decides to seriously going GMO perhaps he should introduce GMO to his own family

Kenyans have to be ready. They will be the primary consumers. Millions of there will reject it contaminate and seek organic alternatives. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18989835/

So called biotechnologists; a group of job seekers who this time want to be recognised. You need GMO in Kenya, which problem are you solving? Drought? Pests? Diseases? All say yes, but which ones? Are those GMOs developed in Kenya? Who was the sponsor? It sounds absurd to import solutions which don't work for your problems!
