This is my own supplementary material to the six-part documentary "The Story of Late Night" that will air on CNN. I selected seven talk-show hosts who had guested on Dave. Fourth up: Joan Rivers.
Late Night:
1. May 13, 1986. Surprise walk-on after canceling as scheduled guest. Soon after she announced her upcoming talk show without Johnny Carson's knowledge. Her show debuts October 9.
2. October 9, 1986. Guest Martin Mull mentions Joan's talk-show premiere.
Late Show:
3. July 30, 2002. "QVC."
4. January 17, 2003. Hosts E!'s coverage of the Golden Globes Awards.
5. August 1, 2003. Cape Thing.
6. July 22, 2010. Documentary: "Joan Rivers, A Piece of Work." Clip deleted due to copyright caution.
7. January 14, 2011. "Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best."
8. May 13, 2011. "Fashion Police" on E!
9. February 16, 2012. "Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best."
10. June 4, 2012. Book: I Hate Everyone … Starting with Me,
11. February 26, 2013. "Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best."
12. July 8, 2014. Book: Diary of a Mad Diva.
13. Dave's eulogy: September 4, 2014.

It seriously warms my heart that right before she died she got the chance to have that whole bit where Dave walked off and she got to do a joke and tell the audience “we’ll be right back after this” like she did on the Tonight Show. Joan ALWAYS showed up with 120%. She’s the best

I always have loved Joan! I saw her the day she got on the plane and said the stuff about BHO. And his spouse. I cringed. Then I heard she died. I was like that was a hit. Omg!

Hey David really didn’t do her a favor. David did not invite her in her hard days ( Carson mess) because he was loyal to Carson. To me letterman is a kiss ass like Jay Leno. After Carson retired, letterman started to invite Joan again.

I just came across this and two of the best hours in a very long time on youtube. I saw Joan ages ago in Hamilton Ontario shortly after my father killed himself. This was a gift from my sister as she knew I loved Joan. My Nana and I would watch her on late night and laugh and laugh. Joan may be gone a few years now but never never never forgotten..... Miss the comedy genius of Joan Rivers.

Thank you so very much for posting this. What an excellent video! I've been a fan of Joan ever since I was a kid and was fortunate to have seen her live twice as well as be in the audience for her Fox show. A page took my "Enter Talking " book backstage to Joan and she autographed it - that was in 1986 and it still thrills me. Thank you again and take care.

Carson was still alive in 2002 when Letterman had Joan on for the first time since the Fox breakaway. That took courage. I wonder if Dave called Johnny to ask him if it was okay.

I can never be a great Carson fan after finding out how his friendship with Rivers ended. What a class act he was - all class when she left to star in her own late show. If he was that smart - he would've known what was going on and why, which lead to her leaving and not being able to ask him about it. She got screwed by NBC, Fox and lost her husband. Joan makes me laugh all the time, watching Johnny on YT he mostly leaves me cold. And people rave about him. She's a laugh a minute, he's a laugh once per show.

TV Hosts and crew dislike children and kids. They are not allowed to be there. I was once a kid and was not allowed to be in the audience on a show where my father was going to be interviewed. So I was set backstage. They couldn't care less about me. They just wanted me to sit down in a chair in a small narrow room for hours. I didn't. I would wonder off. One time I was behind the stage curtains and I almost burst in there witch could have ruin the live program. I didn't because I was a child but I had sense. From this small experience I could immediately sense reality is opposite to what you see and feel wile watching at home. It is all fake. Even the nicest host can be abnóxios rude and not nice when its off camera.

Everyone or the smart ones, For a strict catholic to listen to her is taboo but who can not listen to her raw rustic humor is off limits but I must watch it. The entire together is a job & pre-fabrbicated to get our money & she's worth every penny for the real real dark hidden side of life. Much is true. It's just all a joke to make up the misery. Respectfully, frank A.Collette lll

My age allows me to remember watching Joan Rivers through the years and certain jokes that she often told. But after watching her justify her stinging remark about Lindsey Lohan and her substance struggles, and because someone responded to it she comes on Letterman telling the story as if she was victimized. Well no more watching or listening to her recorded noise anymore.
