Stouts and porters are ales, btw (as determined by the type of yeast used to ferment the beer). Lagers also vary a lot, not all of them are Budweiser. You can get some crazy big 10+% abv lagers (usually doppelbocks or weizenbocks) with huge flavor and character. Ales also vary significantly, even within styles. Some Stouts, for instance, are very light abv and easy drinking (Irish Dry Stouts like Guinness and others) or huge and robust (such as a Russian Imperial Stout). So much variance in beers in general. Heh.

Neon Scorpion Correct. I've had Russian Imperial Stouts that put me on my ass quickly; ones you almost need a knife and fork to get through. Imperials, of any category (IPA, Pilsner, Stout, etc.) tend to be higher on the ABV scale, typically over 8% and often over 10% as Neon mentioned. American craft brewers are pushing the limit of what beer can be and blurring the line of what each style is - perhaps to the horror of many German purist breweries (who secretly are brewing American-style beers on the side with their own craft label brands, so don't let them fool you). I think it's pretty cool.

+nexornator ales and lagers just determine whether the beer is brewed cold or at room temp, and with what type of yeast. both have weak beers and ones that'll leave you stumbling.

Since it's been floating in a river outdoors for who knows how long the light from the sun would have ruined the beer. There's a weird reaction that goes on in beer when it's exposed to sunlight that gives it that horrible skunk smell to it, and it can do that within a half hour. You can imagine how bad the beer would get after days, weeks, months...

Wrong, guys. It's a traditional, Vienna Lager. In terms of "strength" it'd fall between the first and second beers they tried. Ross - a lager and an an ale are mutually exclusive. What determines if something is a lager or ale is the yeast used to make the beer (ie the bugs that turn sugar into alcohol). Jimbus - there is no wheat in a Boston Lager recipe.

If you want to know what I mean here- beer is categorized into two large groups - lagers and ales. These are determined by the type of yeast used to make the beer. Lagers are fermented at lower temperatures and generally will be naturally clearer and have less yeast flavors and include dozens on sub-styles (such as Pilseners and Bocks). Ales are fermented closer to room-temperature and will have a greater deal of yeast flavor and also have dozens of sub-styles (pale ales, IPA, stout). There is a common misconception that a light beer is a lager, and a darker beer is an ale. Not true. There are very strong and dark examples of lager styles (such as a Dopplebock) and very light ales (such as a cream ale).

It's not an unfair assessment. Guinness is a stout - and the most widely-known one at that. Yes, you are comparing an american imperial stout to an irish stout - but those are just different branches of the same tree.
