"If you can possibly manage the time, please play both sides at one meeting."
I recorded a few covers today and cracked myself up on this one. I thought I'd post it in hopes it will brighten my spirits as I'm dreading work tomorrow.
It's "Talk To Ya Later" by, one of my favorite bands, The Tubes. It's off of their "The Completion Backward Principal" album which came out in 1981. This song was cowritten by The Tubes, David Foster, and Steve Lukather. David Foster produced the album and Steve Lukather played some guitar on the recording.
I've always cited Rick Anderson (another pick player) as an influence but I'm really not certain how much bass he actually played on this album or "Outside Inside". I've heard that Nathan East may have played on both of those recordings. In any case, it's Rick who plays the parts live.
On a personal note, when my band, Crisis, was recording our first collection of material, Eric (who engineered the recordings) asked me to bring in an example of how I wanted my bass to sit in the mix and this is the album I brought him.
I'm playing the (Kramer-era) Spector NS2A.

Great work! Saw an interview with Fee Waybill, who described how TTYL was written; basically it was just him, Luke and David Foster at the studio, and Luke bashed out all the guitar parts and the bass. They then called up Mr Prince to lay down the drums over the synth track they had used. So Rick didn't play on the album on this song.
@TJH3113

Thank you! I've heard those stories as well. I was able to meet and speak with Rick after a show a few years back. I spent over 20 minutes with him. I told him that he was one of my favorite bass players and the first think he said was how he didn't play on some of the recordings. I was aware of this and never would have brought it up, but he did. He mentioned "Ready" Freddy Washington as one of the studio players. His take was that he wrote the bass-lines and that they, essentially, were playing what he had written. He really seemed at peace with it. I don't know if he was ever not at peace with it or not. There are some earlier (and later) live recordings that serve as proof that the man could definitely play. Take care!

Thanks. That's hard to say, as every song is a bit different. Yes, I play entirely by ear and memory. I don't use a pick because I am very clumsy with it. If I could use one well, I would. Most of my favorite players use a pick.

@@TJH3113 nah, I commented a while back on, I think, Sunday Paper, where you took a sip right at the start. So casual. I said it made the video. Loved it.
