Dogs and cats are beyond amazing and complex and deserve more credit than we give them. Facial recognition, comprehending human speech, attempting to mimic us, heck, they're almost like human babies when they babble and try to mimic their mother. And they cry when they experience loss, and express happiness and anger like we do. Whoever says that dogs don't have emotions or aren't that smart need to check again, because it can soon become clear to anyone.

I just love my dogs, they are such great friends and loyal companions. Every day my Tibetan Terrier tries to get me to understand exactly what he has on his mind. Dogs really can think, and sometimes they even make plans. He comes to me and he tries to talk. You can see that he is trying to construct words by making his small dog noises, something in between a growl and a bark. I think that he thinks that there are meanings to his words, and they express what he was thinking when he made the sounds. (That is how English works.) He basically understands how speech works, because there are many English words that he understands the exact meaning of. If I say "Do you want to go for a ride in the truck?" He will immediately run to the truck's door and wait for me. Other times he comes to me and tries to talk about other subjects of interest to him. I will pay attention, and he will continue, and become more elaborate, when he sees that he has my attention! Sometimes I actually do understand what he is trying to say. Usually it is "Let's go for a walk" in dog language. Other times it is "Let's have a dog treat", or "Can I get comfortable on your lap?" (He just loves to snuggle up.) I can tell the difference by his body language. I believe that dogs are smarter than we give them credit for, and they feel emotions as strongly as a human does, if not more so.
