In 1977, local radio was dribbling out Aerosmith and ZZ Topp and Kansas etc. Then these guys come along, and people were like...The Hell is this? They were confused. I was confused. Didn't know what to make of The Talking Heads. But they persisted. By the second or third album, I was on board. I realized they were waaaaay ahead of what was going on musically. We needed this sort of musical shock to our system to wake us up to other possibilities in music.

You might want to react to “Life During Wartime” by The Talking Heads. Most folks have heard part of that tune... they just don’t know the name of the tune or who performs it. The Talking Heads are well known for NOT performing “typical” or “normal” music.... they still have some great tunes nonetheless.

In Paul Zollo’s book , it is said that “Psycho Killer” was the first song Frantz, Weymouth, and Byrne composed together and that it was written “entirely as a joke." To this day Byrne wonders why people love it.” (p. 495) But they do! Apparently, Byrne, had been listening to Alice Cooper and wanted to write his own "really rude" song, so this is that song. As a big fan of Alice Cooper way back in 1971 for a little while, I understand why he did want to write such a song. Dark side music certainly has its own appeal.

Talking Heads started at the Rhode Island School of Design and got noticed at CBGB'S in the early days of the punk movement - but they were never punk. They're more of an art-school project. Which isn't as crazy as it sounds; John Lennon started his band which finally became the Beatles while in art school, and many other British bands were started by art school students.

This is the first and only time I've heard this version, and I'm a TH nut!? The lyrics are different for sure. A totally switched-up verse from: "You start a conversation you can't even finish it You're talking a lot, but you're not saying anything When I have nothing to say, my lips are sealed" This version is even different from the extremely early live CBGB video.

"The groove is like someone dancing around with a knife!" LOLOL...ohhh, Tina Weymouth (the bass player) would LOVE to hear that. If you want to do a great musical deep dive into the period where Talking Heads came from, then look into the 1970s NYC punk scene where they were born. This scene also produced the Ramones, Blondie, the New York Dolls, the Heartbreakers, Patti Smith, Television and so much more.

The first time I heard this song, was the first time I ever heard of Talking Heads. My initial impression was, "What kinda crap is this?" However, by the time the song was over I was hooked... I am a big fan now. Super imaginative.

I like this version a lot - is there a "right" version? Maybe the hit version - but it doesn't mean that's the only version of a song. Talking Heads is/was a term used to denote newscasters on TV - just a talking head on the screen.

Yes, there is a "right" version, if you mean the version that actually existed when this song was a hit. This is NOT that. This is a demo that was released years later as a bonus track on some CD. The original version is far better.

I’ve listened to this track more times than I can count. But, I haven’t heard this alternative version. Absolutely brilliant! Thanks for putting me in. Great reaction as usual. Oh... check out “Sugar On My Tongue” off of the 77 album. One of their funkiest tracks ever. I love the Talking Heads. Keep it up🤘🏾

This version of "Psycho Killer" sounds like an outtake or an alternate take of the song. The line "I passed out hours ago, I'm sadder than you'll ever know" got cut from the final version that made it onto the album Talking Heads '77.

I would suggest "My Girlfriend is Better" from their concert movie Stop Making Sense. A live performance with layer upon layer of instruments, David Byrne in his big suit, and an unbelievable synthetic base by Tina Weymouth.

@@steroberts I agree. Stop Making Sense is superior to the studio counterparts of the songs performed. With the exception from Psycho Killer and Once in A Lifetime, I always listen to the Stop Making Sense recordings of these songs just because the are the ones I grew up with. I do love the live versions of these songs though also. There is a particular charm to Byrne’s acoustic solo performance of Psycho Killer, and the live energy of course
