After a period of simmering anxiety related to the lockdown and a new job, a wisdom tooth extraction resulted in two sleepless nights and a trip down the insomnia rabbit hole. After three months of intense struggling, during which she was never present for her loved ones, Laura found a path to peace of mind.

What a relief to learn I’m not the only human on the planet who finds ACT too passive for my personality. On the topic of INDIVIDUAL PERSONALITY, thank you, Laura, for inspiring me to give my insomnia a name. Thanks also to you both for putting Dr. Claire Weekes’ name out there; IMO her work has been under-valued for far too long. 😘 😘 😘 😘 😘 ‼️

Incredible interview! Thank you for sharing your story Laura. So impactful! Especially love the discussion on how sometimes these things happen because the current way we are relating to ourselves (anxiety, being critical) is not sustainable or how we want to be, and it can take something intense like insomnia to make us look into this and begin to change these patterns and develop more self kindness ❤️

Super glad this made sense! And 100%, it’s such a paradox sometimes how when we focus on something it for some people can lead to letting go, but it often leads in the opposite direction. There’s no ideal way I think is the teaching point… but when you find you’re not giving thoughts so much attention, well you’ve found your way!

Hey Laura my name is Terry and I to am from Melbourne. I have been struggling with chronic insomnia for over 20 yesrs. Are you in any Facebook groups where you talk about more about your journey? It's currently 5 am here now and again I can't sleep so I have steeped out of bed and taken a tablet ( I only take a tablet if it's urgent and I have a big day the next day.) I wish we had more support groups in Melbourne for sleep.i currently do on and off again CBTI therapy but I really don't feel it helps too much.

Daniel, I was wondering if you have any insight into the connection between insomnia and generalized anxiety. Seems a lot of people like myself who had/have insomnia already have a underlying issue with generalized worry. That seems to be what keeps the insomnia cycle going.

Daniel, I’m a follower of your channel, read all your books and am practicing your principles. One thing I’d like to hear a lot more about is how to deal with the fatigue / daytime sleepiness, how to get through the day when your exhausted. I wouldn’t mind staying up all night and embracing being awake but I know how crummy I will feel the next day. What strategies can we use to get through the day?? Tom

Also Daniel, what is your take on prescription medication for sleep? My doctor suggested I start Mirtazapine during the learning and therapy process. Stating that it is often hard for people to move forward with therapy and learning tools if they aren’t sleeping at night. I originally was prescribed gabapentin for a month since my sleep anxiety started, but that quickly wore off and I am back to only sleeping 3-4 hours each night. Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated

Hi Daniel, is there a way to reach out to Laura directly and ask her questions about her recovery and the program? As her story seems to be the most identical to mine in terms of time frame and of how she became obsessed with sleep during the day. I would truly love to pick her brain and receive advice if possible

Hello I am struggling to fall asleep, when I feel I'm driffting off suddenly there is this fear and I can hear my heart pounding so strong and I get anxious and can' t sleep for hours. It's very difficult to calm down my anxiety. And the worst fear is that if I don't sleep I will get sick or my brain will get damaged and I will die soon. Then I get tired after some days and I manage to let go of the fear and I sleep really well for some days. And then it all comes back for another nights and it is really frustrating , I don't know why this cycle repeats itself. I just feel I don't control it!
@thesleepcoachschool8192
@thesleepcoachschool8192 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dominika, sorry to hear this but glad you found the channel. You know, one of the most tricky things is that the more we try to control sleep or thoughts or emotions, the more stuck and anxious we get. When we take steps away from control, that’s where we find wellness and peace of mind. Thoughts and emotions have very specific practical purposes. They are actually fleeting at baseline. Imagine a squirrel that sees a car coming this way. He becomes really scared and runs away. But even if it’s on a different street it starts eating on a nut! It literally nearly died but now it’s eating seamingly happy! This is kind of a silly example but it just shows that emotions such as fear or anxiety have that practical purpose of taking us to safety. But when we are safe, those emotions dissolve if not kept in place by ongoing thoughts! The difference between us and a squirrel is that we are Homo sapiens sapiens, we are man who can think about our thoughts. We can start to think that things like thoughts and emotions are wrong and that they shouldn’t be there. And when we try to get away from them, they stick around. The reason for example that so many people say that they cannot shut off the brain is that they’re looking for a switch. In other words again, thoughts and emotions are fleeting except when we try to stop them or control them. So as tricky as it is, it is when you allow any thoughts to happen without judgment and just sort of tuning into them without doing anything - that is when they become fleeting again because you’re not trying to stop them. Hope this helps and let us know how things go!!

@@thesleepcoachschool8192 thank you very much for your answer! Yes I know what you mean, because when I finally let go after days of struggle, I can sleep and my anxiety is not so strong. But then something happens like I have to wake up very early to take my children to school and I can feel the tension and pressure to get enough sleep and all that vicious cycle comes back. And by the way I have a controlling personality, I know it is futile but I would like to have everything under control in my life and of course as you say, sleep is not something you can control by will. And I am trying, trying to let go, really but there is also this fear of getting sick or having a serious health problem if I don't sleep because everybody says so! Do you think that when I eventually sleep my body compensates for the days of poor sleep and restores any possible damage? Well I know I'm seeking reassurance... but I feel like I need it.
@thesleepcoachschool8192
@thesleepcoachschool8192 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dominika, it’s such an important realization that sleep happens a when you let go! This doesn’t automatically translate into letting go easily, but it shows the path. And you know, there’s no evidence that insomnia causes any type of damage or health issues, so nothing to recover from! This I think really is important reassurance!

Oh yes I’ve heard about it! It was developed as a weight loss device and then this got pivoted to sleep. I think there are a million things that have some impact on how we sleep, but insomnia, that struggle and frustration and pondering and anxiety - that comes from thought habits and the key lies in learning and changing habits... Have you tried it?
