In March of 2011 John Scofield guested with the Allman Brothers Band during their Beacon run. Although he had known and played with Warren, Derek and Oteil before, this was the first time he played with the Allman Brothers.
Here is the tune: "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and you can also find "Mountain Jam" on this channel.
Thanks to Butch Trucks these concerts were streamed, and we have some extraordinary moments preserved for music history. Although I was in Europe, I felt like I had a front row seat. As luck would have it, I was able to do an extended interview with John Scofield, who is of course one of the most respected jazz guitarist on the scene today. This interview was done just days after this show and was done especially for blues/rock fans. Naturally we spoke about the ABB, a portion of that is included here after Liz Reed.
Here is a link to the entire interview in MP3 audio form:

Print version:
www.allaboutja...
for Allman Brothers fans, you will also find interviews with Derek Trucks, Jaimoe, Chuck Leavell, Oteil Burbridge, Scott Sharrard , Devon Allman, Susan Tedeschi, Jimmy Herring, and Jerry Jemmott.

While I agree 100% about all three guitarists, let's not forget the amazing musicians that provide such a marvelous canvas for these artists to paint on. Oteil is a great bass player. He draws a line directly from Berry and extends it far beyond most bass players out there today, especially in the ABB setting. Butch Trucks is a monster on the kit. He's one of the very few drummers that listens as well as he plays. I'm sure some of you will give me grief for this, but so many drummers only listen to themselves in a band setting. Now I'm not saying ALL drummers. There are great drummers here and gone, like Neil Peart, John Bonham, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd, Keith Carlock, and Carl Palmer. But very, very few listened and had the ability to enhance the lead guitar players like Butch did. RIP, Butch.

Awesome, totally awesome, CHILLS!!!! I was at this Beacon Show, Center Orchestra Row F, so got the FULL SOUND of The Stage & Music swirling around & above me!!! Didn't really know who Jon Scofield was when he came out, but after the FIRE coming from his guitar, it was clear this Liz Reed, even though no Dickey, was gonna be special!!! My brother was at this show sitting in seats behind me in Orchestra Right, amongst other friends scattered around The Beacon, and we were all mesmerized by this version that night!!! I attended multiple ABB Shows at The Beacon every year since they played at The Beacon and because of Scofield and this ripping Liz Reed, is 1 of my most memorable!!! Thanks for posting!!! Feel like I'm sitting there all over again!!! PLAY ALL NIGHT!!!

This was surely a top moment from all of the Allmans Beacon shows ive seen over the years. Around 12:47 I am pretty sure the whole venue lifted off the ground. John leads you down a real tense path that throws direction and flow to the wind, only to set you up to be assaulted a moment later. Got to say hello to John on the street afterwards. Nothing like those Beacon shows...

ButchTrucks' flam tap rim shot propulsive syncopation and Otheil's bass bomb pulse is rocket fuel feeding the band. Derek, Sco, and Gregg are lifted into the stratosphere of the greatest blues performances. The strong jazz element is absolutely essential for blues to move beyond feeling and into the power of higher soul, and this is it.

Can't argue with you, but there are a couple of non-Fillmore versions from Duane and Dicky that are off the charts, but the recording quality wasn't Tom Dowd level.

Been a Scofield fan for over 30 years and never knew he could jam like this in a rock/blues genre. Freakin' smoking! Perfect seamless fit in ABB, this or past lineups. Thank you kindly for sharing!

Thank you so much, yeah it was quite a surprise watching it happen (via Moogis) back in 2010. It's great that Warren and Derek were able to get these great jazz players to sit in.

i don't know Allman Brothers music (just came to listen to Scofield) but was wondering what the song title was. If there's anyone else like me, it's "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed."

Sorry for omitting the title, it's such a Allman Brothers standard I didn't even think to include it, my bad. If you're interested, here is the most iconic version from the original ABB. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bdiBistnl7y5eHk.html
