Usually cable type shifting in manual cars I think it's most common in Fwd cars not in rwd, in rwd like jeeps TAVERA and innova etc it's just below the manual gear lever the transmission is located and that's the reason why such vehicles gear lever vibrates

Few things to add on from my limited experience. Other than AMT and IMT driven cars with all other Transmissions. Since we discussed about different transmissions let me talk about transmission manufactures. Their are two dominant trans-manufactures in the current automobile industry now. 1) Aisin Transmission one which owned by Toyota . I personally driven their 4speed, 5 , 6 , 8 transmissions (all torque converters) ,CVT and owns a Toyota Yaris as second car which has 4 speed torque converter. All of those unit do decent job, 8 speed torque converter do lot of gear hunting in the city but does the job well on the highway( have to take into consideration as some one living IN overseas speed limit is 110km here). I personally prefer 6 speed trans torque converter. Aisin 8 is wide used in different manufactures and very well accepted among customers. 2) ZF Transmission Widely used in BMW and others including the 8 speed in MG Hector sold in India (known as LDV D 90 here).They make 8 speed ,9 and 10 these days. Honda one of the dominant users of ZF (uses both 9 and 10 speed in their line up in the states and other parts of the world. not sure about what trans Honda uses in India). I personally wont rate their Torque converter as great as Aisin (again its something personal), even though they do a decent job. Rest of the transmission are pretty much self made by manufactures (sometimes it can be a sister company like Nissan using CVT made Jatco Trans in most of their products but 2021 Pathfinder came out with 9 speed Torque converter again not sure about the transmission manufacture). Nissan CVT had lot of issues in the past Hyundai KIA and their Luxury brand Genesis uses in-house transmissions. Had 6 speed Torque converter before but now 8 speed ,CVT, 7DCT, and the very latest 8DCT with wet clutch. If I have to hate a transmission it would be VW DSG(DCT) comes in 6DSG, old 7DSG and the very latest 8DSG came out the 2021 Golf. They use Aisin 8 speed in their high end products like VW Atlas, Toureg and other Audi, Porche sister brands. I have no idea who manufactures 7 speed torque converter available in Polo in India. VW DSG is very engaging to drive but not reliable at all. If i have to pick a CVT it would be Subaru Lineartronic CVT. Mazda only do one transmission in their entire line up, 6speed torque converter. if I have to pick up a transmission it would be this one. These review is based on my past years living aboard and driving different brand in two different continents. More than happy to help anyone with a question

Good going guys! Enjoyed this conversation as well. Please do an episode on ‘engine braking in manual transmissions’. I find it weird that many motorists still do not know and use this good driving technique. Even cab drivers who drive for a living do not use it. Also it will be helpful if you guys can tell us how the automatics fare in the engine braking department.
@tominjoseph5713 жыл бұрын
I think cab drivers would seldom use it even if they knew. Because their priority is fuel efficiency. They would rather put in neutral and burn out brake pads than engine brake. Seen so many drivers do the same thing!
@josraju3 жыл бұрын

Nice video. Got clear idea about various transmissions. Based on my experience of driving 15 years manual, then 6 months wagner AMT, then 1 year urban cruiser torque converter, then moved to usa and used nissan altima cvt for a year then finally now driving Hyundai tucson. I feel like tucson is fun to drive and loved it in test drive but i was not knowing its transmission. Later came to know its DCT. In slow moving traffic we can put into manual mode so no jerking. Oversll i feel DCT is fun to drive( not considered mileage or durability i don’t know) 😅

Very good summarisation guys. Small correction @23:40. There is no technical need to switch from D to N for DSG when you are stopped in traffic. You can be on the brakes, but ensure sufficient brake force on the pedals. The transmission is smart that it wil internally shift to N. Problem is when you apply barely enough pressure on the brake pedal, which confuses the car into thinking you are trying to creep in traffic. If you always had to switch to N in traffic stops then 'Brake Hold' function won't be possible in DSGs, which is not true. Creep of a DSG is indeed via clutch slip like a Manual or AMT and therefore inherently not as good as CVT/TC boxes, but always shifting into N is overkill.
