It's not just Southgate though is it, the English media, commentators & pundits are just as bad - the way Shearer, Ferdinand, Lineker et al were hyping the team after winning on penalties despite the fact that Switzerland were much the better team over the 120 minutes and had the better chances especially in extra time (which everyone seems to be conveniently ignoring).

To me this shows what a skewed view of football these media guys have. The Swiss are actually a very good team, the issue is that the media has overhyped England’s players when in reality they are only so good for their clubs because they play along side better players from other countries.

The dismissing of the Dutch is a bit ridiculous. They are ranked in the top 10, have won 7 of their last 10, score plenty of goals, and are one of the big teams. The gumption to criticize Germany when England havent faced the same opposition is staggering. They lost to a Spain team on fire that would have battered England in 90mins. That was the real final and although Spain might run out of steam by the end having given so much to beat Germany, at that stage of the competition, they would have beaten any opponent, so it aint no shame to lose on extra-time like this and no indictment on Germany to be eliminated by spaniards. They beat the Danes that dominated your lot and drew against the same Switzetland that England needed penalties against while Germany didnt have 120 mins against them. England are in the last 4 by luck of the draw, not merit. The comparaison with France is ridiculous, because what they're doing by going through against Austria, Netherlands, Belgium & Portugal despite underperforming is what England have done against Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia and Switzerland, its not comparable. Netherlands is actually the first team on the same level and Southgate has never beaten that type of opposition in knockout tournaments, so we'll who "flatters to decieve" at the end...

Poor assessment. England beat Germany in the last Euros in a knockout match & I believe they're regarded as a better footballing nation than Netherlands. Silly to suggest Spain would 'batter' England in 90 mins, and even sillier to then try to caveat yourself by saying they may 'run out steam later'. The Danes did not dominate England and the comparisons between teams of past matches is also, once again, silly. Slovenia drew with Portugal. Georgia beat Portugal. Portugal beat Turkey. Turkey beat Austria. Austria finished top of the group that had France & Netherlands. What's your point with all the comparisons? In fact, Germany conceded more XG vs Denmark than England did & I believe it's universally agreed that they got pretty lucky to beat the Danes due to the VAR decisions (toe offside & then an unlucky & controversial handball). I don't agree with Simon Jordan that Germany were poor but I also don't agree with your emotional & silly assessment above when suggesting it's staggering to compare routes. Germany were unfortunate to go out to Spain (& fortunate to go through vs Denmark) but let's not diminish the achievement of England in getting to the semi finals.

Totally agree. And now if England were to beat the Dutch, & France/Spain, you can already hear the caveats being thrown around about how these 3 x teams are 'average' or in Spain's case, were 'average' coming into the tournament. Just like the German team (defeated in 2021) are now dismissed as "yeah but one of the weakest German sides ever" this negative-tinted view of England's achievements under Gareth will continue whatever he does. England beat an in form Swiss side who knocked out Italy (10th in the world & current Euro holders) but now the narrative changes to "it's just Switzerland" & "they drew with Scotland". Sick of hearing this recent England tournament form dismissed as 'nothing more than expected' as if we've had achieved much more under previous regimes. Why not compare with previous managers' record?

You could throw a blanket over the top 8 teams in Europe. It comes down to small matters of detail. Look at the quarter-finalists: - 3 of the 4 games went to extra time - the Spanish scoring from a header late in extra time, the Germans then putting a similar header over the bar, a few minutes later - the Portuguese missing one penalty in the shoot-out against the French, after there was absolutely nothing to separate the sides during 120 mins -the Swiss hitting the angle of post and cross-bar but the ball not ricocheting in - the Turks failing to convert chance after chance in the last 10 minutes.

England are underperforming based on the calibre of players available. The clear issue is Southgate (and managerial team) who are so underprepared and relying purely on the quality of players to take them through rather than actual tactics and planning. He has been unbelievably lucky and every single game the opposition manager has dominated tactically. Look at the game against the Swiss, they see Saka dominating so the Swiss change tactics to stop the threat. Once it’s stopped what does Southgate do? Stand there with his hands in his pockets and then we concede. He eventually makes subs but just throws a load of players on, no formation, no tactics other than try to score a goal. Mind boggling.

The bile that has been espoused by the media would be justified if england had the rich football history of germany or italy or france. But they don't. Granted you play to win and england havent won anything during this recent period but hes come closer to winming then any mgr since 66. Southgate is trying to emulate Sir Alf Ramsay. Well , Ramsay had the guts to leave out Jimmy Greaves and play Hurst. He also had the guts to tell his team (after Germany's late equalizer ) going into extra time --- " you won the World Cup once , now go out there and win it again " - Southgate will not drop Kane / Trippier / Walker even though they are stinking the place out with their very below average performances. If its 1-1 at full time on weds Southgate will probably tell his team to "keep their shape" and "not give anything away" ......and yet he wants to emulate Ramsay?

The question about Southgate has to be: 'Would you in all honesty pay £100 to watch this rubbish?' I've paid £100 to watch England once and it wasn't the best value for money to be honest. It was a 1-0 against Australia in a friendly at Wembley. Southgate is in the entertainment business and I certainly wouldn't spend £1000 to go to Germany to watch the rubbish his side have served up. Watching it on the telly is a waste of 2hrs of your life * 5, but it's not a holiday elsewhere foregone, is it? You need to be absolute hard-core 'winning is everything' fans to be revelling in the dross served up the past 5 games. I'm telling you now, if Arsenal had served up this dross for 5 games, you'd have hundreds of season ticket holders on the phones saying 'Sack Arteta!!'

Feels like many of them just paid football fans without very much insight. Or rather selling gut feelings as insights.

The comment Crook was saying about Germany overhyped... They had more big chances and won Xg stats against Spain! It was a close game. Of course Spain deserves praise and in that they're right. If Germany would have won that game, all would be saying "good team, best of the tournament so far". Yes there were difficult moments against Hungary for Germany, but they won deservedly and the difference to many teams is that they can create chances. They take more risks more and sometimes look more vulnurable at the back. Yes, England has got through the obstacles and not lost, but I find it very risky way with a good squad to trust winning games that way. You're not always that lucky to come back to the game when trailing.

Southgate usually says that England have gone deep into every tournament when he was a coach. Okay, let's see what opponents he had to face : WC 2018 : Tunisia (W 2-1) Panama (W 6-1) Belgium (L 0-1) Colombia (win on penalties) Sweden (W 2-0) Croatia (L 1-2) Belgium (L 0-2) Analysis : they lost to every decent team (Belgium, Croatia) and won against teams they should win against. Colombia is a tricky side to face, but let's be honest : England should have been able to beat them inside 120 mins. Euros 2021: (all matches except vs Ukraine AT HOME) Croatia (W 1-0) Scotland (D 0-0) Czech Republic (W 1-0) Germany (W 2-0) Ukraine (W 4-0) Denmark (W 2-1) Italy (loss on penalties) Analysis : yet again poor football and matches won AT HOME (!!!) against teams we expect them to win (maybe Germany is the exception, but that German side was awful given their back to back group stage exits out of consecutive WC). The only good performance was in Rome against Ukraine. Tbh that Ukraine side was lucky to even be in the QF in the first place. WC 2022 : Iran (W 6-2) USA (D 0-0) Wales (W 3-0) Senegal (W 3-0) France (L 1-2) Analysis : Again, easy teams to face until they meet the first decent team in France and they lose. Euro 2024 : Serbia (W 1-0) Denmark (D 1-1) Slovenia (D 0-0) Slovakia (W 2-1) Switzerland (win on penalties) Analysis : again, England face the "easy"-side of the draw and scam their way into the deep parts of the tournament. I would like to see Southgate face Spain, then France and then Portugal (for example). If he wins all of those, we could talk about him being a great manager. Also the idea that Germany was an average side in this tournament is just pure BS. They would have easily beaten England this time around. Germany was the second or third best team in this tournament and could even have gone through against Spain, given the chances they had.
@pkrelmo
@pkrelmo 13 күн бұрын
I honestly love how you mention Croatia being a decent team in one tournament and then completely gloss over the fact that we beat them in the very next one. And how Germany go from being an awful side three years ago to the second or third best team in this tournament when, this time, THEY were the ones who went out to the first decent team they faced. Then there's how you use England's home field advantage in Euro 2020 as a stick to beat them with and yet I don't hear you say the same about Germany in this tournament? By your logic, Germany should have done much better here, no? Seeing it was a home tournament after all...
@kevinkb2290
@kevinkb2290 13 күн бұрын
@@pkrelmo Okay, they won against Croatia by playing brilliant football, right? Did you watch the game? It was atrocious. But yeah, I guess they beat a decent team there. One could also argue that the Croatian team from 2018 had a slightly better form than the one they beat in 2021. As for Germany, you are comparing apples and oranges. Back when England beat them, Germany's football was awful. Now with Nagelsmann in charge, would you say the same? Yes, they played at home, but I would argue that they played better football than England played at their home tournament. You also see a clear tactical plan under Nagelsmann, whereas Southgate's plan seems to be "wait until someone comes up with a piece of individual brilliance". Additionally, England have had a much better squad in recent years (just look at all the talent they have!) and thus, one should expect better from them.
@pkrelmo
@pkrelmo 13 күн бұрын
@@kevinkb2290 yes of course I watched the Croatia game. I didn’t say they played brilliant football nor is that even part of the argument. Winning is what matters and teams that win these tournaments do so by grinding it out. No one comes in and spanks everyone 5-0 on their way to victory, so why is that the expectation or even a measure of success? With Germany, they did OK in this tournament but the fact is they went out on home soil to the first good team they played. That’s how their success is going to be measured, not because they passed Scotland off the park in the first game of the tournament. And as for relying on “individual brilliance” that is quite literally the game. Argentina built their World Cup winning side around Messi and relied on him. France build their whole team around Mbappe and rely on him (no coincidence that when he’s not been at the races in this tournament they’ve had to really grind it out). Carlo Ancelotti has made a managerial career out of being a fantastic man manager and setting up his sides to get the best out of his top players. He’s not a tactician. He relies on his players and their individual brilliance. So did Alex Ferguson. Not everyone has to be a Pep, there’s so much more to the game than that.
@kevinkb2290

@@pkrelmo I'd argue that Germany was slightly better than Spain in that game, which is definitely not true for the times England faced a test. But Germany argument aside, Ancelotti, Guardiola, Nagelsmann, Klopp, Arteta or, heck, even Mourinho would have played better football AND won games with this squad of talented players (arguably the best squad in the World rn?), than what has been the case under Southgate. France and Argentina arguably didn't always play great football, but I would think that a vast majority of football fans would say that they definitely played better than the horrendous football that England has produced over the recent years. Let me ask you this : do you think Southgate is one of the best (if not the best) mangers England has ever had?
