I love the phrases about how old someone is, like 'eu tenho 40 anos' - `I have 40 years'! A pregnant friend was asked by an elderly Portuguese lady how many months her baby was missing (rather than how many months until it was due)

Yes! This is very helpful. For me, there are things I kind of intuitively know, but then someone verbalizes it and by having a phrase to attach to the idea it clarifies or formalizes the idea in my mind. I hope that makes sense. Thanks!

I wish Portuguese was taught in the literal translation (‘bad English’) all the time by everybody. It makes it so much easier to learn, when you don’t have to guess what the teacher wants you to say. It makes it easier to learn words and sentence structure. Also, learning how people say things in their language is an in-site into their national personality. It’s not ‘bad’. Thanks for making a party with a dog!❤

There have been several articles on the effect of this on the English language in the US, especially in South Florida, which has been settled by a lot of Brazilians and other South American immigrants. The English translation of "we're going to make a party" is starting to become regular.

Here in Brazil we usually say "dar uma festa" instead of "fazer uma festa".

and in portugal we don't say Fazer uma festa unless we are planning a party for someone else. e.g. vou fazer uma festa de anos para a minha mae. Instead if we are talking about ourselves, we say "ter uma festa". have a party not make a party.

Love this Liz! I have been doing this and it definitely helps. You gave me a couple that were new to me. There are so many more! Fazer as malas. Fechar a luz. Fazer anos. Not to mention all of things that you "have" from hunger to your age. Then there's é uma horas/sou duas horas. I have fun finding these!

The "casa do meu amigo" example is something it's easy for native speakers to take for granted. I'm so glad my parents (with only their failed O-level French!) taught me the structure for 'the X of Y' in Romance languages when I was little. Once I got to secondary school I noticed a lot of people still trying to indicate possession with "apostrophe + s" in MFL lessons and saw how much of an advantage that foreknowledge was.

I have an example (I think) from a text conversation I had with a Portuguese friend who I was getting a ride with somewhere. When I arrived in front of his building, I texted him to let him know I was there, and he responded "OK, I will go down in a minute." We would say "come down" or "be down," but I am guessing that would be said differently in Portuguese, and perhaps that was the reason for his choice of words.

Good one! Yes, Portuguese say "ok, já vou aí abaixo" or something similar, so it does translate to "go down" 😊

“Vou à casa do meu amigo” is the same “vou para a casa do meu amigo” In English = i’am going to (=para a or à) the house of my friend. Para a or à = to

Interesting. It made me remember that I taught Portuguese idiomatic phrases (and we talk a lot in idiomatic phrases) to my international friends, by simply translating them directly into English in the process of normal conversation (things like "that gives fabric to sleeves" or "that's where the lady pig twists the tail"). I used to do that just as a joke. Truth is people always asked what I meant, and, besides the shared laugh, they always memorized these expressions without any effort. Some, after 15 years and without even speaking Portuguese, they still remember the expressions.

Speakibg of memorizing things because the English sounds strange: I have found that English and Portuguese phrases using give/take and come/go are sometimes reversed. If you wanted to do a video on that it would be great! I think about it anytime there I want to say something with those verbs that isn't purely literal but I haven't figured out the pattern yet.

My mother used to use the phrase "making festas" when describing a person making a fuss over another. "Did you see her making festas with her mother at the bridal shower?"

I disagree. Maybe you don't realize this because you are a native english speaker, but there is a lack of resources for european portuguese in languages other than english. Don't forget your channel is itself an english resource! Take myself as an example. My first and second languages are cantonese and mandarin. English is only my third language, but it's good enough for understanding most of the english resources that teach european portuguese. This is very important for me, because I could only find very few good chinese resources for european portuguese. (There are plenty of chinese resources for brazilian portuguese though.) Only in english could you find so many resources. If my english were really that bad, I'd have had a really hard time learning european portuguese.

Have you try Instituto Camões? They probably have a department in Macau, I'm almost certain they have matarials in Mandarin or Cantonese

To be honest, to me personally it doesn't help so much because English is not my mother language and for that reason my English is not good enough to identify the errors a Portuguese speaking person may make when she or he is speaking English. But anyway your video was funny, thank you for that!

Acredito que estamos a traduzir "[I go] to the [house]". Portanto "à" está usado em lugar de "to the"?

Tanto se pode dizer, "vou à tua casa" como "vou a tua casa"
