NOTE: Through the comments I've learned that it's more common to remove the foam from the bottom of the seat rather than the top. Please keep in mind that all of my videos are just meant to be guides and are not necessarily the "best" way of doing things. Be creative, improve on what I do, and take the route you think will work for you!

You're actually meant to take the foam out from the bottom. It requires removing the butt pan but it means you can get a much more even removal as you can just use a bread knife to cut it away.

I did this about a year ago on my 91, one of the best free mods I've ever done! I ended up taking the foam from the bottom of the seat from the "butt swell" section, which worked well for keeping the fabric taught on the top. I also decided to ditch the lumbar support pad for more bolstering in the sides. Made the seat slightly less comfy, but it holds me in place so much better now in the corners that it's a worthy trade-off in my mind.

Well done. I knew that the foamectomy allowed you to sit lower, but I hadn't realized that you could also use it to turn it into more of a bucket seat for... 1% the cost of a real bucket seat+harness+bar(gotta use real JDM zipties though, no knockoffs). Excellent work as always Greg. I also second the others that were asking for MS tuning. Even basics, such as getting an idle going and basic fuel/spark/AFR tuning would be tons of help... MT.net can be difficult to sift though and pull out the needed nuggets at times.

Highly suggest removing foam from the BOTTOM of the seat foam though. It works better that ways as it keeps the cover from appearing loose. I used a turkey carving knife to trim my foam. I also shaved down the back rest pad as well to allow sitting farther rearward and to provide more side support.

I do the foamectomy differently. I remove the back of the seat from the bottom, then when I cut out the foam I go from the underside and just get rid of everything that filled the hump. I also take the foam from out of the back if the seat. Just feels like more of a racing bucket to me. But good video for somebody trying to simply sit a little lower. Looking forward to more broke and boosted though!

Addendum video for this one to do the stock seat lumbar mod? I did that and found the stock seat more comfy for longer. My video used craft foam but you could use a rolled up towel which is probably free. I like the results but I still need more bolstering for that cornering g bruh. Nice choice using scifi btw...makes a great production background music for miata projects. ;)

I performed the foamectomy on my seat from the bottom and was quite liberal with taking out foam. My ass sits literally inside the 'bowled' area now between the mounting humps. Love the positioning now! For your bucket seat, did you remove the floor humps and bolt it to the floor? I read some forums saying that removing them reduces the structural rigidity of it. IMO, there's not much rigidity in those humps as they are only spot welded to the floor.

+Johan WP I suggest cutting the bottom of the foam though. This will keep tension on the cover, and you won't be able to tell that there is a foamectomy until you sit in it. I used a carving knife on mine and it worked great. You can also do the same mod to the seat back foam, which will allow you to sit farther rearward in the seat, which provide more side bolstering.

Quick release (to make it easier to get in) with a slightly smaller steering wheel will help. As well as a lower profile seat, like a Lotus seat or similar

+TheCarPassionChannel I'm just wondering what brackets and mount you use for the seat. Im running a kirkey seat but thinking about going to a bride seat to sit as low and far back as possible. I have tall guy issues. I notice you sit so low in your car... I need that

StevoCarDude I have a ProCarInnovations mount, but I think the GarageStar mount has more adjustability.
