I shall never forget hearing this 'in the round' at Greyfriars in Edinburgh, an intimate church known for its particularly fine acoustic. As we sat in the pews, the SCO Chorus singers stood in the aisles all around us, and the sound was magnificent, transcendent. Afterwards I don't think anyone's eyes were dry.

Beautiful. Haunting. Ethereal. Un-earthly. Awe-inspiring. The nearest you'll get to God in this world. The singers did a magnificent job with a piece of music that must be hugely challenging both to sing and conduct. I understand all those who said it reduced them to tears. It did the same thing to me.

The Holy Spirit works in mysterious and sometimes not so mysterious ways, and this is an example of the Holy Spirit at work; that work begins with the composer, extending outwards to singers and accompanists and directors and to its hearers. Polyphony is the music of Heaven. Thanks be to God!

@Alan Pontet it is irrelevant what is being sung about and don't call me disrespectful. If someone is going to post a comment about a non-existent fairy then they should expect a response. And what are you getting upset about - I wasn't rude unless of course you think truth is rude.

Read them over and over again. Visit a priest and describe to him how you feel and tell him why you commented upon this post even though you don't believe in God, for it was probably God who led you to it, perhaps as the beginning of a journey. Spem in alium (Latin for "Hope in any other") is a 40-part Renaissance motet by Thomas Tallis, composed in c. 1570 for eight choirs of five voices each, widely considered to be the greatest piece of English early music and one of the greatest choral works ever composed.

@@DrawYourHead yes only one of and this recording is not a good example either. There should be no women's voices at all in this. The treble lines should be sung by boys and the alto lines by men. What we have here is the equivalent of a piece of music intended for a string quartet but now played with a trumpet instead of first violin. Spem in Alium is great but there are other greats, such as William Mundy's Vox Patris Caelestis. Biggest and noisiest is not always best...

Regular Rod You are quite right that there is a huge amount of wonderful polyphonic style music by many composers. Also, the point you make about boy trebles is valid, and not only in music of this period - the very fine masses of Haydn for example are enhanced enormously by the use of boy trebles which allows for a spectacular contrast with the soprano solos where they occur - the tone is very different. However, by any measure, great or small, Spem in Alium is one of the greatest pieces of music from any age.

A transcendent piece - I remember going to the Cloisters to hear the sound installation of 40 speakers, each playing a close-mic'd recording of one of the singers performing their part. It was an incredibly moving experience, and a testament to the times we live in with regards to how we are used to hearing sound, and yet, quite raised above that status quo in its expert implementation.

+samgrant83 It overwhelmed me emotionally when I heard it for the first time. I was seriously ill and for all I knew dying. I went to a performance in the great entrance hall of Uppsala University House. The 40 part motet was sung on two balconies, with me dowd below in the centre. At two points I could not analyse what I was hearing, I was overwhelmed and shaken. Hearing this kept me in good spirits through a difficult time.

+George Berger That sounds really amazing. I'm pretty sick and Spem in Alium always helps me going through the darkest times. It is my favourite composition and song in the world. Also, I have a very strong phobia of heights, and I there is a place I always dreamt to climb for as long as I could remember... when I finally travelled there, I couldn't make it up to the top because I was crying too much and shaking out of fear. I tried again in the next few days, with my headphones on and Spem in Alium playing again and again in my ears while climbing... and I did it! I collapsed on the ground at the tops, crying a lot, but it was amazing... Really is one of the strongest moment of my life, it is one of my best memories!

The Tallis Fantasia (I hope you pronounce it correctly) was described by Warren Mitchell as "Music to die to"(Desert Island Discs) he then said , "I used to think that of Sibelius 2nd Symphony." that's another impossible choice for me..... shall we add in The Protecting Veil (Taverner;20th century)? I sang this wonderful piece in the Cathedral Basilica SS Peter & Paul in Philadelphia with Tamara Brooks conducting Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia in the late '70s or early '80s.. We did it with 3 or 4 voices per part. The Cathedral is a huge barn of a hall and I am sure some of the sounds we made then are still up near the ceiling somewhere. The Tallis Scholars recording found on KZfaq has intonation problems, normal in a massive a capella work like this one but disconcerting nonetheless. There is a 2-CD release with David Willcocks, George Guest and Stephen Cleobury conducting two hours of Tallis including the Spem in Allium and the Lamentations plus many other works sung by King's College Choir and St. John's College Choir. Superb! We had the privilege years ago of hearing The (augmented) Sixteen and Christophers perform Spem in Allium in London. Equally great. The power of this music to me is the echoic effects that keep adding to the sound. Better live than recorded, better sung than listened to.
