As a sailor (at least formerly) I can tell you that it's difficult to leave your woman and go to sea. Then it's difficult to leave your ship for the last time when it gets back to port. One finds oneself with out a ship and a woman.

Just discovered this on 9gag I've just had a baby and I love singing traditional songs to her. This and "fields of athenry" are her favourites....also my wife and my other daughter are thoroughly sick of me hahaha Does anyone maintain this channel anymore? I have also always been torn... I love the range and volume a shanty can have when sung by a full choir of men and women. However, when listening to only men sing them, you get the authentic shanty sound as it would've been sung by sailors in 17th and 18th century. I love hearing both versions but something about the all male sound makes this land loving lad feel he has gotten his sea legs like an old salt lol

The leader could be a ship's bosun. However, his crew would have been brawny or scrawny men sweating on deck under a hot sun while heaving & hauling heavy lines. This song sounds better to my ears when the men are hoarse, tired, lonely and angry.

A horrible thing happened to me in the army. It ended my career and crushed my soul. I’ve been out for almost a decade. Just found this song. In the last 8+ years no one has understood, and they don’t need to. I know this is random and an obscure personal association but for me she is that loss, pain, failure, ego shattering consequence. Not really, the lyrics themselves are the song's forte. It's a song about a captain finally letting go of his old ship whom he bonded with. You can't expect a crew to have good harmonies, do you?

AVGw not meaning. Depth. The words are great and make up some great feeling. I know what it’s about, but you can sing twinkle twinkle little star with fantastic harmony and the depth appears.
