Many thanks Bob, we'd been wanting to visit the line for a year or two and with a decent forecast yesterday and a good mix of locos, off we went. I hadn't been to the area since the days of the Cardigan Bay Express in the 1980's so it was an overdue return. Sunshine in Wales was a rare treat too!

I can imagine. I spent the 4th. filming a couple of steam specials around Liverpool. Sadly the cine projector ate most of the film, not that it was any good anyway but just a record of that day

I thought this was an outstanding video on all counts (as was the one you took on the Ffestiniog Rly a few days later). I love the way you start segments with the sound and then keep us in suspense while we gaze at and absorb the beautiful scenery. I particularly enjoyed the passing of two trains at Brynglas - a clear demonstration of how the token system works. (I'm intending next year to visit from New Zealand to see this lovely railway once more, and seeing this video has fortified my resolve!)

Thanks very much Bruce, glad you enjoyed the videos. I enjoyed capturing the sequence at Brynglas, just peeved that I made a mess of the shot of 'Tom Rolt' leaving the siding and coming through the station so was unable to use it. Another visit is called for to rectify I think!

Superb footage of this charming little line and it's well maintained vintage locos and rolling stock Austin! The scenery is quite outstanding and your positions and angles really bring out the beauty of it all. I loved the clip where the two locos pass and the "signalman" exchanging tablets situation the drivers - great stuff! Also the first train approaching in the same clip let out a blast on the whistle that I could have sworn was an LMS hooter type! Great enjoyment for me anyway! Thanks. Ken

Thanks Ken, really pleased with the visit and that I got to the planned locations as sometimes things go awry. Did you not wonder why the train that entered the siding was not seen leaving? I have to own up to a senior moment, although the camera was actually recording I forgot it was and pressed the button only for it to stop recording! Very annoying but one to do next time

acw71000 .I did notice there was no leaving shot, but of it down to being caught up with the other move and just missed the departure. Do you know? I've done the same as you three times and never noticed until reviewing the clips on the x920 camcorder! So very frustrating especially since all three misses were really important clips that had visualised using in the edited and final production!! Ah well senior moments unfortunately occur at our ages! Thanks again for a really enjoyable video. Ken

@@acw71000 very nice footage of the Old lady on a passenger service. when i visited the railway with my dad in may of the same year we where very lucky to travel behind no2 on a passenger train. the other engine in steam that day was No6. sadly we didn't go and have a look in the narrow gauge railway muesum became we didn't know where the entrance was to it and our hotel was pretty far away

At Snowdonia National Park there are eight narrow-gauge railway tracks, former used to transport slate. Each one has its own special charms. Like the Talyllyn Railway with its water tower (9:30) and the water take by loco at enchanted scenery, which Austin has perfectly captured. - Heinz

It's amazing to me that each of these narrow gauge railways seems to have an individual character Austin. They are alike and yet they're not if you get my meaning. Anyway another great series of shots in the Welsh sun. I wonder - are you on a mission to cover all the "Little Trains of Wales" (and more) as they were once labelled? I hope so!! Take care - Chris

Another superb video, Austin, thank you. We rode on the TR in the 90s as part of a railway holiday - seem to remember taking 35mm stills of the waterfalls on a brief stop - but this has given a much more attractive perspective. Rhetorical question: how do you get so much varied quality footage like this in one day? Most enjoyable. Kind regards, Bob.
@acw71000
@acw71000 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Bob, I'd not been to the Talyllyn since a brief visit in the late 1980's so a visit was long overdue. The varied footage is purely down to choosing a day when there was a good mix of locos in the timetable and then choosing our locations and hope it all came together on the day. I'm still slightly peeved that I made a mess of the shot of 'Tom Rolt' departing Brynglas which is why it doesn't appear in the video

I was here on 3 August 1968 where my family brought me to celebrate my birthday as a kid. It was a day of mixed feelings, for as I recall it was also the last day of regular scheduled steam on British Railways (V.o.R. excepted). But here was the Talyllyn and surviving steam! I heard a story that one of the Talyllyn loco's boiler plates had got as thin as 1/4 inch but I think that was in the early days... and in any case it may not have been true.
@acw71000
@acw71000 7 жыл бұрын
Yes that was the last weekend of regular steam Stephen. I was out filming some of the specials on cine film. Sadly the cine projector, showing an unhealthy disregard for history has eaten most of the film's over the years. Strange to think the Talyllyn had been long established as a preserved line by then

I only wish I had more of those just-in-my-head cine sequences than I do. My best preserved is Southern pacifics blasting through Winchester on up expresses, 'cos they were franky a bit scary to a kid... but wonderful as well of course. I think I already mentioned that the steam railway smelled really nice too ;-)

Excellent! Just wish the TR would run a few more trains! The first one from Abergynolwyn to Tywyn isn't until lunchtime! What they really need is a diesel loco similar to what they have at the R&ER. Their first and last trains are booked for diesel haulage.
@acw71000
@acw71000 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I assume the railway have done their research and decided that an early train from Abergynolwyn isn't viable. In similar vein the first train on the R&ER starts from the main terminus at Ravenglass rather than Eskdale. I'm sure it's very difficult to get a solution that pleases all

acw71000 The Ratty's first down train is 10:30, so you have got a bit of morning to play with! I was at the TR last year when it was their gala weekend. It felt slightly surreal getting on a train at Dolgoch Falls around 09:00-ish towards Tywyn! The TR would benefit greatly if they adopted the same way of working as the Ratty.

Railway is working on extending the timetable, and an extra later train has been inserted this year compared to previous years. The late start from Abergynolwyn is being looked at, and diesesals are available but the preference has always been to use Steam wherever possible.
