Love Simon's style.. I also enjoy the fact that he still goes old school on the bass drum muffling, placing a towel close to the head, opposed to an evan's eq pad, or a different head choice like a Remo Powersonic batter head.. It's what retains his signature and very distinct sound..

Ya have to think of this as a "mini-drum concert". Not sure why the uploader split into 4 parts but if have you have the patience, listen to all 4 parts as 1 long drum composition, with many different sections. It's a great overview of the SP vocabulary.

By demonstrating his skill on the snare(s) showcases Simon's technique coupled with dynamics. It's an intended approach, if you will, towards the drum solo. It's not as easy when you think about controlling your tendency to auto-play the toms. As the video approaches the ending he goes into the toms which was edited out. I've been following Simon Phillips for quite some time and he surely plays the toms extremely well. This is the artist aspect of approaching a drum solo and Phillips is truly an artist on the kit. Lots of thought and energy went into just that segment of the solo. There's a lot going on here when taken time in really listening in. For one, his alternating between the top limbs (hands) with the bottom (bass drum) are intricate patterns that don't clash and retains the groove throughout the solo. There is a continuity that permeates all sections of the solo - It's like speaking with various tones and volume in other words Phillip's seasoned approach to soloing is not merely unpacking the kitchen sink, but is a wealth of dynamics, technique, skilled intricacies and conserved ( harnessed power) presenting his audience a musical voice of it's own....get that. My take, Rac

Off to a slow and slightly raggedy start (I've heard smoother rolls) - but he definitely dropped it in the pocket going forward, proceeding to show incredible hand and foot speed (doing perfect triples at a speed most drummers would need a double pedal setup to pull off- but as the camera plainly shows, he's working the hit hat at the same time with the other foot). This solo struck me as being completely impromptu (although it's possible that this is the case with ALL his solos- nothing pre-planned, just stream of conscious playing, so sometimes its supre-cohesive, other times maybe a little less so, but all the time totally in synch, and incredibly skillful.

The information in the set configuration is incorrect. The actual snare drum array in the video is: Main: 14", probably the Gladiator (5.5x14). Left: 12", probably the Pageant (5x12). Right: 10", uncertain. A fanatic might find further info with digging.

It's hard for me to believe that, in the "background", there's a STEADY 1/8 note tempo, that's never broken, no matter how crazy his rhythms get. To appreciate the full effect, I sit at my desk, tapping this steady 1/8 note beat - tap,tap,tap,tap- and it stays in synch with everything he's playing- you could be there with a cowbell or sticks, just going "click, click, click..." and it would perfectly compliment his playing- while he's accenting the downbeat, then the upbeat, then the accent is on the rest between beats, I mean, he's a machine.

Cristian Perez It depends on the drummer, and personal preference. In some cases, it helps, especially if you're on a drum kit that's not you're own or one that you're not accustomed to. In other cases, it helps when trying to orchestrate a fill, and get each note where it should be.
