Tama. You wont ever regret it. Hardware is more important than anyone realizes. Tama has been leading the hardware game since the 80’s. I have a older Bubinga ant want a Maple just for the new hardware and finishes. Tama’s Starclassics are even on par with DW’s 6-8k “flagship” kits but have better hardware for 1/3 of the price lol

FanaticalDrummer I personally can’t stand DW. I’ve played top notch numerous collectors series kits tuned perfectly and they just don’t feel good compared to Tama. There’s no bounce back I don’t get that same feeling and tone I get from a Tama. Even my backup Tama silverstar kit sounded better then any DW I’ve played and I got my silverstar for 400 bucks. My Tama starclassic BB hyperdrive is better than any other kit I’ve played and I’ve played every company’s top notch kits. I actually also prefer the thicker aggressive beefy sound of starclassics compared to the more open thin shelled star drums. Star drums are top notch best quality kits but sound preference I prefer starclassics over any other kit in the world. And I got my starclassics in exact finish and sizes I wanted for 1900 shipped straight from the Tama warehouse. U can’t beat that.

Pearl's optimount puts too much stress on the shells and lugs. The star mounts from Tama take the original "Rims" mount idea further by turning the top hoop into the mount, dispersing the weight of the tom evenly. I bought three of Tama's top of the line road pro boom cymbal stands with counter weights, but now wish I would have gotten two star cymbal stands and one roadpro with counter weight based on this video

What sets this kit and Starclassics in general apart from every company and competitors is the hardware tama brought down from the flagship star drums. The quick lock Tom brackets, quick locks on the floor Tom legs, aircushioned floor Tom legs, the new bass drum Spurs, the claw hook bass drum legs, and just the hardware in general. Every company has exotic looks but no other company has hardware on their kits like tama that are so innovative and just makes drummers lives so much easier. The quick locks are seriously a game changer for me or anyone who sets up and breaks down all the time and want their set up exactly the same and have to set up and break down fast in between bands. I have a 5 piece tama starclassic BB hyperdrive and got the exact sizes and finish I wanted shipped straight from the tama warehouse for 1900 shipped. Can’t beat that for what you get, build quality, finishes and looks, hardware, and just the feeling you get when you play a tama starclassic is just better than anything else under my hands personally.

Jess Freeman Not for sound. Their goofy bulky lugs ruin the shells resonance. They also follow what Tama does, like many others do. Its the details that sets Tama apart. DW is just a pretentious brand, and the drums sound round and flat which is probably the worse con. Never heard a kit that impressed me, even in studio. They also look goofy because of those lugs. DW tries to convince people they need to pay more for less because of how prestigious their brand is. California company logic. With Tama, people know why they would invest in them, they dont need to be convinced by a roster. They hear the kits and thats the seller. Everything else is complimentary.

Bill Perri Its got a fat sound for sure hence the name. Its more rounded, has a slight eq bump in the highs which you can hear. Like oldies recordings or post bop bands. For warmth I still think Bubinga was their best, with coated heads its just such a great sound if you play numerous styles. Clear heads turn it into a metal beast. Maple is still the best resonant wood, decent attack with pronounced low end and highs, its a “clean” sound. But Bubinga has this punch and classic sound that it fits all styles, one of the few kits that in person just sounds so damn good. Head choice is crucial though. Its a dark wood so it records warmer than birch and maple. Oak is also warm, a good inbetween. Bubinga is also a good investment given recent events. The prices of the kits will sky rocket in years to come and wont be as common.

Bill Perri Agreed. If I wasn’t committed and invested in Tama, i’d go Yamaha. Japanese wood working is just money. Yamaha took everything Tama did and did it their way, which I appreciate. Sonor tries, and Mapex failed, they barely keep anyone endorsed. If you’re in Europe you almost always go Tama or Sonor. For me I think Tama and Yamaha just put out another level of quality without the massive hype. I look at so many drummers in bands and see Tama but never in promos or advertising for them, they know the product sells themselves. Then we have Thomas Lang for DW lol

I would say there is a huge difference in feel for the starclassic compared to the mid level kits like the silverstar and the superstar classic but I would the biggest difference isn’t due to the different kind of maple, even though I know it makes a difference but not as much as the hoops. The starclassics have diecast zinc hoops which are super duty and sturdy and give it great feel and rebound compared to the flanged hoops with the Tama RIMS style mounts on the silverstar and superstar classics. Starclassics and star drums have top of the line hardware on them but yeah you could say all of it adds up to equal to a much better kit but it’s not just or mainly cause of better maple wood. If they put the diecast hoops on the superstar classics with the rest of the starclassic hardware it would feel wayyyyy better.

I think I prefer 10x8s over 10x7s. 10x8 I can go medium low and get a nice doom sound. With 10x7s they seem higher pitched to me and I get more of ringy tone where I tune to my preferred tension so then I try to bring it down and I lose it all. It doesn’t have that sweet spot. But this is only on the one I tried a Yamaha hybrid maple one. Is this something attributed to most 10x7s anyone else with 10x7s find this with other manufacturers 10x7s?? That’s why I like how Canpous does a 12x8 for their 12s but then also stays 10x8 on their 10s.

@andyham6094

I won’t buy a kit unless it has a bass drum mount. And especially tama’s mth1000 bass drum mounting system with the quick locks is the best mounting system out there. Also it doesn’t even go through the bass drum. There is a platform and the pipe goes into that which is on top of the bass drum which also helps instead of having a big hole in the actual shell. But either way it’s just so much easier and more comfortable. Being in a band where you constantly set up and break down with just 10-15 minutes between bands you gotta do all that so fast and I’ve had to play shows with the toms on cymbal stands and it’s just a hassle and I just prefer the bass drum mount. My Tama starclassic bb has it and my Tama silverstars have it. I want a Tama star but they don’t make it with a bass drum mount. Also was trying to get the new Tama superstar hyperdrive maple but those also have no bass drum mount.

Does the outer 1 ply of pacific walnut effect the maple sound quality on these drums?
@alexanderjamieson7971
@alexanderjamieson7971 6 жыл бұрын
Does type of wood really matter though? A lot of the weight of that shell comes from the polyurethane coating over the shell, and the glue between the plies that hold the plies together. A lot of coveted vintage drums were made of cheap poplar wood, which is commonly used for door and window trim/casing. Stave shells sound different but that has probably much more to do with how thick stave shells are compared to ply wood shells. The diameter and depth of the drum, and the choice of drum head has far greater impact on the sound than wood type.
@drumcenternh
@drumcenternh 6 жыл бұрын
Wood does have some impact on the tone of the drum. Specifically the density. Check out our DW Exotic Comparison video - same sizes, same heads, same tuning - different wood types. You might be surprised!
@alexanderjamieson7971
@alexanderjamieson7971 6 жыл бұрын
I understand old growth woods are more dense, which is why older Martin guitars, sound better and louder (in addition to the wood becoming more dry and resonant over time). I have watched the DW video and didn't hear too much difference between the three DW kits your channel demoed. The very subtle and very subjective differences would be lost in a recording mix or live music setting. I have a feeling the difference in woods would be more evident in drums that don't have resonant drum heads, like concert toms, when the drums no longer act like an acoustic chamber with an active and passive membrane bouncing sound waves off each other. Where I would be concerned with cheaper wood drums from younger trees is if that wood is soft and susceptible to being easily dented, meaning the bearing edges are more likely to need resurfacing/cutting during the drum's lifetime, and how likely the drums are to go out of round. What I liked that is pointed in this video, is how much better the hardware is on more expensive kits. Having Lugs that won't crack with high tension, or that have internal mechanisms that won't vibrate and make noise, hoops that don't bend easily, mounting hardware that's durable and easy to set-up for gigging, that's what we drummers are paying for when spending more than $1,000 on just a shell pack, whether we realize it or not. I recently bought a new Tama kit specifically because of the hardware. I also can't bring myself to like the look of DW's CAMCO/Turret lugs. Based on this video, I'm probably going to buy a couple of star cymbal stands in the future. I went with their next level down, their higher end double braced road pros with counter weights (which are fantastic) but these stands are next level.

But even with it's iso gaskets, the drum sounded lifeless in comparison to the equivalent Pearl model and I hate despise Pearl hardware as everything strips out. Both stands were the top offerings with isolation feet. I always choose Tama over Pearl for durability but I cannot deny what was obvious. The drum also felt more rigid in the Tama stand. Well idk about 20 years but the backbone of tama for a long long long time has been tama starclassic Bubinga way before tama star was created. Tama has always been known for their Bubinga shells cause no other company can do Bubinga like tama. Not sure if tama was the first brand but pretty sure the first major huge drum brand to do it but nobody’s Bubinga drums sound like tama Bubinga. Tama does something special when they make their Bubinga drums. But who cares about those little details cause you guys do the best reviews on KZfaq. Even tho his playing isn’t that good it doesn’t matter cause the drum sound and the way they mic the drums sounds a lot more natural than other reviews. Even better than sweetwater cause Shane has different descriptions for all kinda kits. Nick from sweetwater LITERALLLY explains each kit the exact same and I stopped listening to them. These guys actually are honest, sweet water never give you the whole story. They only say the toms are punchy with good tone interval between each Tom, the bass drum is beefy and loud, the snare is cracking, it feels good underneath the hands. Nick and sweetwater say that about EVERYYY KITTT. Look up every drum review and it’s the exact same even tho his playing is killer. Shane really goes in depth and I love how they’ve been really backing tama recently. Tama being my favorite company in the world and tama Starclassics being my favorite drum series or drum line in the entire world I’m loving all the tama reviews. Please review the tama starclassic BB hyperdrive kit. I haven’t seen a lot of starclassic hyperdrive reviews in great quality like this.

if you put coated emperors like you say you dont gonna have more response with low playing, you will have less, or g2 coated as well, a double ply head with and xtra ply of white coating is like to have a head of 2.5 plies and will be less sensitive than a 2 plies transparent head like this g2 transparent ones...., if you want to have sensitivity in this drums and have sound playing really softly you need to put a 1 ply drum head like simon phillips do, ambassador clear over the same , or evans g1...., i was looking your video of the ludwigs, and i recognice which is one of the more beautifull drum sound i ever hear..., specially in the classic maple, most beautifull tone, being honest after your vid i want to buy one but you cant compare a classic maple with a starclassic, tama have to much precision in the building process and in the components, and oesnt matter if is from japan or china..., also the die cast hoops helps a lot, for perfect tuning and for the tuning remains for a long..., with a classic maple after hours of playing you need to tune again...., if you look the tension rods from a starclassic tom or a snare you can see which the tension rods go really straight from the lug to the hoop, and in the starclassic bass drum as well, so incredible how much precision is in the tension rods..., if you look clouse a classic maple tom or snare is a disaster...., any tension rod go straight, and that is really bad for tuning and for the tuning remains for along..., also the triple flanged hoop of ludwig have tons of tolerance and imperfection, the desighn is really old..., also which the lugs from a starclassic are really clouse from the edge is really good for precision..., in a sonor sq2 is the same, thats why are so good, they are build for and with precision...., the old tama floors dont project?, every time i hear the records of billy cobham from his old period in tama i go crazy with how much power all the toms and floors sound...., i dont hear any bass drum more powerfull than a starclassic..., a 22 sounds like a 26 ludwig...., sorry, sometimes not agree with you...., and this drum set sounds incredible.

No bass drum tom mount? No sale for me. Tired of all this virgin bass drum baloney. 2 toms up need a central kick mount.

I just don’t dig the look of modern Tama’s. They are beautiful. But I wouldn’t take one on stage with me.

It’s just not my flavor. Drums that look like fine furniture aren’t my style. And I don’t think they look special from far away - hence wouldn’t take em on stage. Admittedly, there probably aren’t a lot of people that would agree with me.

I like wrapped drums for gigging for durability and looks. They'll always stand out more on stage under lights than any wood grained kit. And it really sucks to get a ding on a wood grained kit.
