Since there's a lot of confusion, I should clarify the pronunciation of Tamagotchi. Outside of Japan, Bandai's own marketing team had pronounced it incorrectly since the beginning. More recently, advertisements from Bandai use the correct pronunciation. You can hear it in a recent Tamagotchi Pix commercial: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/idWbodVl3qnDXZs.html

As soon as I heard it, I realized that that's probably how it's SUPPOSED to sound...but the marketing teams back then decided the "gotch" (as in "gotcha") sounded better.

I remember once walking up to and telling my friend that i went in his room farted in his night stand drawer and it killed his tomagotchis. He ran upstairs screaming .I still lol when i randomly remember it.

I remember when the tomagotchi came out. A lot of kids had them. It got to a point where the schools banned them. But a few schools let kids bring there tomagotchi because it thought the kids a lessons about responsibility.

Never did have a Tamgotchi (though I knew someone who had one), but I still have my v1 red Digimon v-pet. My brother had a purple one and we rarely did the battle connection thing, but I don't think he ever did much with his. I think I kept mine alive up to the Ultimate (MetalGreymon) stage at least once, but typically it would die off some time during the Champion stage, the form of which varied but would typically default to Numemon because school kept me from all the micromanagement.

I remember these things from the late 90's, they quickly took over my school so they just got banned. I've never had one because my parents thought the whole concept of a digital pet was kinda dumb. I always assumed they were a fad that fizzled out in a couple of years, I had no idea that they made it into the mid 2000's.

To this day, I do still have a Tamagotchi from 2004. It stays with my Mum in South Australia and every time I go to visit Mum, I pop the battery back in him and take care of him from where he left off, then when I'm about to head back home, I take the battery out and repeat the cycle

I still have a Tamagotchi at age 37. In 2016 was Ex Machina Met Gala, a fashion show. Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom weakly implemented Tamagotchi into their wardrobe by just pinning it to their outfit. I thought this was pretty cheap for a couple of millionaires so I upstaged them by starting to wear my Tamagotchi on a gold pocket watch chain.

I was already on Digimon in 1999, which is like the successor of sorts? Where I'm from Tamagotchi disappeared in the early 00s for Digimon pet toys.

I remember playing with Tamagotchis when they first came out (well, I think my sister eventually had a gold one, but for most of the craze I had an off-brand panda one that reset every time it bumped ANYTHING). It's cool seeing all the new features that have been implemented since then!

I had a non-official Tamagochi in the 90's in which you took care of a dino which could grow to become giant, that was neat, but I don't miss any of this at all.

We still have a green Tamagotchi Connection V2 (the bottom rightmost one in the commercial near the end of this video) but it doesn't work anymore but I have a pink Evangelion Tamagotchi (modeled after Mari from the Rebuild of Evangelion/Shin EVA/Evangelion New Theatrical Edition movies and yes, Tamagotchis are so famous in Japan that they even occasionally do collabs with other franchises) which works though.

Didn't even know they made it past the early 2000s because when I was in school most people got a mobile phone when they were about 7/8 years old and people would play games like snake,bounce,pairs,space impact,etc and kids were on their Gameboy color or Gameboy Advance if they were spoilt LOL 😂

I remember I got mine from some KFC promo. Fun little toy until our school had to ban them. Kids played with them more than paid attention in class

I had a Star Wars Yoda(OG Baby Yoda FTW!!) one in the late 90's, and thankfully it had a vibrate only function, so I never got in trouble when I was in school. I kept mine on my house keys in my backpack most of the time anyways, and about a month in when the first round of batteries died I had my fill of these things, and moved on.

Technically Frame is correct in that the Japanese word 「たまごっち」 is pronounced "Tama-Go-Cchi", but here in North America our commercials always pronounced it "Tama-Got-Chi" since young English speakers typically only ever read "go" with a hard "O" when it's part of the standalone word itself, and "Gotcha" is already in the common lexicon of English with a soft "O" and is one letter off from "Gotchi" in Romaji spelling.

@@petercap2398 Well the truth is, North American audiences have been saying it incorrectly from the beginning (including their own marketing, so it makes sense why everyone says it the other way). In more recent North American commercials here, they say it the correct way as it sounds in Japan. It's not marketed around here as much, so most people haven't caught onto that yet.

@@FrameRater Doesn't help that Hepburn Romaji treats 「っち」as "Tchi" whereas Japanese standardized Romaji just doubles the consonant to make it "Cchi" to denote extra heavy emphasis on the "Ch"

Pretty sure I had a version 1. It came out before Pokemon hit, and mine was half-orange, half-black. The game you could play with it was pretty lame: guess if the Tomagotchi will turn left or right.

3:56 I had the Tamagotchi PC Pack on my old Windows XP computer years ago and unfortunately I misplaced the disc, but managed to find one on eBay at the start of this year. Sure, it may of cost me well over 300AUD, but it was worth it

I did have a Tamagotchi in I think fourth grade. Another classmate got me interested in getting one. Don’t remember the model but this would’ve been around 2004-2005. I remember being very passionate about it, to the point I made my parents make frantic trips to get new batteries when they got low.

It’s disappointing hearing people say “lol remember tamagotchis that was an old thing” as if they stopped being made and don’t have a community behind these little guys still keeping the toy production alive into 2022. Obviously it’s gone out of style but it sucks to be reminded of that all the time (TwT)

Maybe it's because I just turned 40, but I remember these as more of a late 90's thing, then a 2000's thing. I had the knockoff Star Wars Yoda one(original Baby Yoda FTW!!), and as soon as the first round of batteries died in a month I had my fill of these things, and never picked another one up.

Regarding emulation: There are only two emulatable Tamagotchi Connection series toys (although it's a stretch, since they weren't marketed under the Tamagotchi Connection branding): The TamaTown Tama-Go (whose ROM was dumped via arbitrary code execution thru specially-crafted figures), and the Tamagotchi Friends (whose ROM was dumped via power glitching). The classic 1996 Tamagotchi is emulated in MAME/MESS, though.

I've got one still sealed in packaging that's on the unit my AV receiver and what not is on and an old one on one of my display bookcases :D Holy shit, wait, what? You could pause them?! Goddamn, *none* of us knew that back in the day of all the kids in my school. It's why they were banned from school so quickly...constantly going off during lessons. After that, it was Pokemon cards (the ones before the trading card/battle game cards, and later those also), but luckily they didn't bleep constantly so no one knew if you weren't an idiot. I, as an electronics obsessed child, simply removed the beeper/speaker from mine. It was a very 'me' way around the problem haha

I used these a lot in the 2010s!! They’re so cute! I always remember letting some tamagotchis grow to oldie, but I regret doing that as on the v1-3, they die 5 days after the evolution, but on the v4/4.5 you don’t have to worry about them dying. Ps. The game at 3:04 is exactly like the v3 game ‘Get (music notes)’ I love that game. Ps. Not all the characters (when connected with different versions, eg. V2 with v4) would show nazotchi, it would only show it if the version doesn’t support it.

An actual toys is totally RARE now, most kids nowdays always playing video games on their smartphone, PC and console. If you gave them a toys like a remote control car they totally will not touch it.. kinda sad to think about when me back then would be so excited with transformer toys and remote control car.

I had toys and they were lame, no remote control car I had ever laster for more than 30 minutes on a whole day's charge. What's wrong with video games? Why's it sad that some kids nowadays like a superior plaything.

A more appropriate title would be the "Time Killer of the Late 90s". Take it from someone who was a kid back then: by the 2000s, Tamagotchi was dead, long supplanted by Pokemon. If you were still fiddling with digital pets in the early 2000s, it most likely some Digimon tie-in product, not Tamagotchi.

@@FrameRater So did I and by the 2000s they were dead. But I was in middle school by 2001 so maybe elementary kids were playing with Tamagotchis as hand-me-downs. But even by 1999 I remember all of us 4th graders were into Pokémon and Digimon. And again, if we were still mucking around with digital pets it was usually something Digimon related. Maybe it's also a regional thing too, since I'm speaking as a spoiled American lol
