Part 2 of the build from my Basic Armour Modelling series, this time we tackle the Tamiya 1/35 Churchill MK.VII, this tank is an older model from Tamiya, originally dating from 1970s, this kit was re-boxed in 1996 with some crew figures and a French farmer. The tracks were also improved in this later release allowing them to be glued rather than joining with heat.
This part takes you through the painting and and initial weathering.

I like your beginner series here. You should remind viewers that there are many, many techniques, and no one learned them ALL at one time, on one model. Its a hobby, go at your own pace, and learn a technique one or 2 at a time. Even as a 40 year modeler, I have at least 4 kits half assembled in the stash, burnout on superdetailing is real.

60 year old, recently retired and starting out on scale modelling after a loooong lay off! Must say that many moons ago the reasoning behind a gloss coat was that matt paint is a rougher surface so decals (transfers!!!!), don't adhere as well or lie down perfectly flush. Gloss is smoother which means a better result. Casting my mind back to my inky fingered past, when I avoided varnish like the plague I do recall my old Airfix and Frog decals being reluctant to stay put on a matt painted model. I am mainly an aircraft modeller but this series is excellent and just what's needed for someone like me trying to make up for lost time. My missus has provided me with a Tamiya 1/35 Crusader (Italeri originally?) and a rather more complicated Meng Whippet. They're up next after I finish my Do17z. Crusader first......looks a bit less daunting! Thanks for the uploads.

Wonderful! Yes the gloss or not gloss debate is something that can be debated.....I have that very Crusader in my stash, a build that is coming soon (ish) good luck with it!

I'm in the same boat, just returning to the hobby after many years away. I still remember the thrill of these kits and I'm enjoying these vids in the same light. However, some things still pass me by like ... what is a 'pin wash' (is it a 'panel wash' under a different name) and how to thin oil properly etc. A beginner may not know these terms and techniques. One of my biggest bugbears watching KZfaqrs is how much paint they seem to use. For example, when dry brushing they pour out a blob of paint, cover their brush in it and then wipe it all off again ... why not just use less paint? It offends my parsimonious Northern soul ... ;)

Love the series. I recently returned to modeling after a long respite. After a bunch of research, I got bogged down by all the advanced techniques. Your series is helping me take a step back and I have realized I can still have a good looking model by performing the basic tasks well. Thanks for all your time and effort! I look forward to your next video every day.

Great series! Greetings from USA! First time modeler, followed almost step by step on the Churchill (except for the diorama and figures - next time lol). Think it turned out pretty good! Appreciate all the beginner considerations and explanation of what and why. Watched the whole armor series and now onto the other videos of yours to build on skills with the next one, which I think might be like your Tamiya easy eight Sherman. Thanks again!

I am just thinking about getting started and I have to say, you do a great job of explaining yourself properly and setting expectations that we don't have to do anything we don't feel like if it feels too difficult. It sounds obvious, but when you are trying to start a hobby its important to hear that. Love the videos!

Great series of videos. I’m working on the Churchill and have just painted the tracks. It made me wonder why on your model the spare links on the hull are grey yet the active tracks are brown. Wouldn’t the spares rust at a similar rate to the active links?

Great tutorial. I bought this model kit to follow along. I'm just at the dust adding stage and applied slightly too much, so dabbed a cotton pad in my thinners and rubbed the dust away. It did start to bring some paint off - would I be best to let it all dry and then re-apply some further matt coats?

Since I had a bad experience with colors from the company TAMIYA so I paint everything with Revell colors. So I would like to ask what is the replacement for your paints from another company ... At the moment I am also gluing Churchilla mk 7 .. I will be looking forward to the answer .. Sorry for the translation, but everything is translated via Google translator ...

Hi, great video and as a beginner appreciating the tips. Could you explain why you weather after a Matt coat rather than a Gloss coat, thank you again
@ChampionScaleModelling
@ChampionScaleModelling 3 жыл бұрын
This is due to the weathering materials used having more bite on a Matt surface, if you do it over a gloss it is difficult to get the effect to stay how you want it, as it can wipe off very easily. This is neither correct or incorrect and there are some techniques that work over a gloss very well so trial and error is a good way to approach this.

Beginners, dont try to cut letters apart like that. Get some microsol set and sol, just trim the outer edges of a decal. You dont have to spray the whole model with gloss, just brush paint the little areas where the decals go with some gloss, thinly, its doesnt take much.
@fedemotta3
@fedemotta3 3 жыл бұрын
Well a varnish coat helps protect the paint from the wash thinner, doesn't it? My thinner eated through my varnish and ruined it though 🤦‍♂️
@orbitalair2103

@@fedemotta3 yes, but its usually not necessary to gloss varnish, decal, then varnish again. paint is expensive.
@derekbaker3279
@derekbaker3279 3 жыл бұрын
The main problem with applying a gloss only to the area where decals go is that even supposedly colourless transparent coatings will slightly alter the apparent characterists of the paint underneath it. While the change is subtle, human vision is surprisingly good at discerning subtle differences in colour, texture, reflectivity, etc.. Furthermore, the tiny difference in thickness between the areas that received an extra coat (the gloss coat) and those that didn't will minutely alter the way light is reflected from the surface & change the apparent 'depth' of the finish. Consequently, even after the gloss coat has dried completely, decals have been added, and a clear matte coat has been applied & has dried, the area that was gloss coated will appear slightly different than the adjacent areas that did not receive the gloss coat. And, depending on the lighting, the difference may show up in photos/videos of the model. On the other hand, if the entire model is glossed coated everywhere, any subtle shift in colour, texture, reflectivity etc will be uniform everywhere, and with nothing to compare it too, anyone looking at the model will never know the difference. ☺
