I picked up this kit from the first model show I ever went to, and now almost 10 years later I finally have this one completed and I'm happy to see it displayed on my shelf with the rest of my WWII Japanese collection.

One thing I failed to mention in this video is that I didn't have any Vic Hobby Thinner to use with their paints. I found that Tamiya Acrylic Thinner worked really well. I could only add to that the possibility of adding some acrylic paint retarder to prevent the tip from drying out.

I shall definitely look into those but Tamiya is always my favourite. I am so envious of your skills. It’s like a real one that’s been shrunk.

Hi, Jared I just recently built one of those. Was glad to see your version of the build. I used to steer away from float planes, until I built this one. I really liked it. I've since built the float version of the George (Tamiya 1/48) and the Rufe (Zero float version) in 1/72 from Hasegawa. I could send you some pics through Messenger, if you like.

I was the same way until I restored an Airfix PBY Catalina and built their Sunderland. I'm not much of a fan of water, but I really like building float planes. And yes please, I'd love to see pictures of that.

Very nice rendition of this aircraft, especially the chipping and the faded paint. Three suggestions. One, use solid script; the current outlined script is very hard to read. Two, make the script bigger so it is easier to read. Three, leave the script on longer so it can be read.

Excellent build of one of the prettiest floatplanes of all time! I really like the effect you got using the grey panel liner to post shade those panels- I'm definitely going to give this a try on the next model it'd be relevant with.

Thanks TWA, I'm really thrilled that one has been completely restored, it's a really facinating aircraft and I enjoy seeing it with my collection. That's a frustrating thing with some projects, I'll find a really interesting weatheirng technique, but no model to use it on.

Thanks Michael, it was a very labourious process, and frustrating at times as I wanted it to look as small as I could get it. In the end I'm glad that I went through that effort, but probably not again for a while haha

I agree completely, it's an absolutly lovely deep green, I was kind of torn adding all that weathering on top of it.

Thanks Dean :) There are a lot more Vic Hobby paints on the list since I started with this kit. I thought the metallics were really pretty.

Hi! Very good video and build. I bought a batch of Vic Hobby paints at a very good price and I haven't used them yet, I've read in the comments that the Tamiya thinner works. Do you know if the Vallejo one will work well? I should do some tests before starting my next model with this new paint brand about which I can't find much information.

Hey Jared, old man. In my best Gomez Addams impersonation. Great build. This and the Harvard, are top notch looking builds. Vic, is a completely new company to me. Pretty good looking colors. More like Vallejo, AK, eh? They seemed to have some a pretty tight grip when you removed the masking. That’s the selling point when it comes to Acrylics, I believe. Any future plans for another live? Enjoyed the last one, last year. I’m a big fan of all them guys, so it was kinda’ geek out for me. LOL. Hope you are doing well still, in these upside down times. Look forward to seeing more of your builds.

Thank you very much :) Yes, Vic Hobby are new on the scene only a few years old now, and they are a purer acrylic similar in may ways to Vallejo, Citadel and Formula P3 Paints. They have a wide range of paints and they are adding new ones all the time. Thanks for the feedback, I didn't know that they were fun to watch. I was thinking of doing one again, but no one really asked for another one. I'm going to be doing a longer update video sometime this week explaining things that are going on. My big problem at the moment is finding the time to get a lot of things done as my Dad's health isn't the best at the moment and he'll be going in for surgery next month. Hopefully within the next 2 weeks life will slow down more for me :)

Questions: Do you think that you could use Gunze Mr. Leveling Thinner instead using VIC Thinner??? What PSI was you using when you were Airbrushing the Paints??? They have some colors that I need for some Future projects that I will be working on and was wanting to learn more about this line of Paints, I have not see any Videos on this line of Paint as of yet until now. "Thanks" for sharing this with us and NICE looking model.

Hi Tom, thanks for watching and thanks for your questions :) These Vic Hobby are more of a pure acrylic paint, like Vallejo, Citadel or Formula P3. Because they are more pure, they are more on the fragile side, so I think that Levelling Thinner wouldn't work, I think because it's Lacquer based it would be too agressive. PSI really depended on the paints. Unlike Tamiya which I'm more familiar with, the Vic Hobby that I used were all different consistancies one from another. However, I did find the more common PSI pressure to be around 15-20.

Very nice! I like the chipping effects. Where did you get the canopy mask for it? I haven't built one of these in a while, I may get one with my next paycheck. There's one with orange undersides to wings and floats that looks pretty neat.

Thank you kindly :) I cut out those masks myself. They were a challenge, and I'm just really glad I got them done. It took a few sessions to do as the smaller masks really tried my patience.

How did you make those perfect circles in the tape (white and red circles masks)? Superb build.

Hi Dario, I cut those using a circle template. The process was meant to be included in the video, but it was too complicated to film. Most of the time my hands were in the way, so I cut that footage.
