Sometimes you see a tool and know it is going to be so useful for fixing and repairing vintage toys. And this Tamiya Electric Handy drill was one of those. I saw it a few months back online and have been trying to track it down since then. Finally I found it on my recent trip to Tokyo and today it's time to get the kit built ( yes it's a kit ), and see how well it works.

The Tamiya board of directors are all giving themselves a pat on the back this financial quarter after discovering they can now get us to build the tools too 😂

Can we take a moment to think on how meta it is, for Tamiya to make a kit of a tool to help make kits?

The main advantage is that it's slow enough that it doesn't melt the plastic you are drilling.

Quite nice small tool. I could not build it. Or better say I don’t have the confidence to build it. But I would use it for my projects. Keep up the good work. Thank you for sharing

Awesome device and I might pick up one for myself. If you have any troubles with the Japanese manuals you can always use Google translate on your phone and it can translate the text real time while pointing the camera at it. I used it myself with some Japanese and Chinese manuals and it helps a lot.

had one of these for a very long time its been modded to accept bench power. Even at 40 quid you'll use it a lot over the years if you are a modelmaker or tinkerer. Pro Tip: Pair it with a proxxon multi-chuck 28941 and you can do away with the collets as well. Dont try the dremel chucks they wont thread on. Youll need a small bit of tubing just placed in the shaft behind it (I used some old brass tube I had) to reduce the internal diameter of the collet shaft so the chuck jaws catch but once youve done that it works great and will hold anything.

The price is right. But I bought a rechargeable Dremel when I was 21 and it still works. Plus there's a lot more attachments for it than this Tamaya drill. $100 tho, so the thrifty price is a plus if you're only drilling holes.

I keep seeing these for about $40-$50 AUD (around 20-26 pounds) at some of my local hobby shops and I've always been tempted to pick one up; the amount of times I've gotten blisters and sore hands from using my pin vise with larger bits is a bit too high for my liking so I think I might grab one.
@toypolloi

Would be a great little MOD put a potentiometer in it, think there was just enough space, variable speed then.
@toypolloi
@toypolloi 8 күн бұрын
There is space inside to make modifications. I plan to do a few things to mine in future. The speed is actually pretty good. For slow stuff I will still use a pin vice as that really gives you the best control.
