Tamiya's new Wild One Offroader Blockhead Motors Edition has finally dropped and we got our hands on one of the pre-production units!
We've been sitting on this for awhile simply because the kits were waiting on the ESC - a NEW ESC that is a collaboration between Tamiya and Hobbywing. This kit comes with the HW 1060, a brushed ESC that is fully waterproof and includes features like a adjustable (external) jumpers to modify some parameters, standard Tamiya-colored wiring and a rather small footprint!
In this video we crack open the box, showing you everything that comes in it as well as some more details on the ESC.

Nice hobbywing art ESC I would be getting it for all my cars that I put brushed motors on and it's waterproof this was a new event for this.

Looks like another nice buggy minus those plastic bushings, still waiting for my Super Avante. Pre ordered this one too should be interesting to see which one gets here first .

The only problem with plated parts is the base plastic left when you cut them from the sprues. Get a molotov chrome pen to colour over the sprue attachment points after removal.

cool vid, could you tell me which rc car is on the shelf above your wheels and tires? The little trophy truck wedged between the 2 shelves actually?

Replace the servo saver. Or have an aluminium one when/if the stock one breaks... although the colour of its plastic is different to the one in a standard wild one re-release..

Good idea, however I can't imagine breaking that thing with the slow speeds this buggy will be going. I do have a couple here I can replace it with if need be.

@@Competitionx when I built my wild one. I tested it inside the house. It touched a wall not even at full speed.. broken the servo saver at the corner where the servo rod goes thru.. ..

Does the kit come with full ball bearings or is it necessary to order aftermarket ones to replace the crappy plastic ones Tamiya usually includes?

You will need to purchase bearings separately. I used a set from Fast Eddy - there should be a link in the video description.

Im considering getting back i to rc buggies after 35 yrs.. gonna pick the bbx or the wild one... Only considering this ww cuz of the motor and esc .. Does the bbx run/handle and better than ww. enough to jusstify having to buy an esc/motor? I can get a slipper clutch for the ww?

It's hard to compare anything to the BBX - it's got the looks, performance and can handle much more power than the WW. It's even got a bit of vintage-styling to it as well. In our book, it's an all out better purchase than the WW. HOWEVER, the WW does have history and a killer looking re-issue livery, so it's a great buy as well. Just don't expect stellar performance figures from it.

Full-coverage plastic plated. Parts and the actual 'tree' is plated. The plating really looks good too.

It comes with bushings, but we would suggest getting bearings before starting the build.

Yes, this kit came with the Hobbywing THW-1060-RTR ESC.

Do we think the preorder kits will come with the ESC? The websites all say they require an ESC. I wonder the early kits like this are the only ones getting ESCs

I'm pretty sure all kits will come with this ESC. They created a part number specifically for this buggy with the HW ESC -60A. If that changes in the future, the -60A will be gone.

@@Competitionx Unfortunately not true. Mine arrived without one. Not really sure why this has happened because the price is the same. So if you're lucky you'll get one otherwise you'll need to buy one. Which is exactly what I'm stuck with.

That's why. The HobbyWing deal is only for US-based purchases put together by TamiyaUSA. Since Canada doesn't get their supply from US distributors, it's doesn't exist there.

Lovely kit but don't understand why Tamiya put in the standard front bumper instead of supplying the Blockhead metal one.

I would guess cost. A metal front bumper would probably add a bit more to the cost of the kit. It would have been a cool addition for sure!

@@Competitionx I'd have thought an extra 10 pounds/dollar's or whatever the equivalent would have been in each country would have actually increased the interest in the car even more but that's just my opinion.

Oh I agree. Including them adds more value to the kit as well as shortens the build time. I'm waiting right now for my bearings to get here before I can start. Kinda sucks.

That is correct. Anything with a -60A or 'A' at the end will come with the HW 1060 ESC. So, you're in luck! :)

Weird that they would plate the roll cage cross members but not the side plates..

Ya, not sure about that. However, with the side plates having the metal 'mounts' in them, maybe they didn't want to take the time to cover those up before plating. Plating over them would increase their diameter and could cause some issues when attaching. Maybe. Who knows LOL

in the product page for this kit, it says it needs esc but now you are saying it comes with the esc. which is it??

I've been told that the US-Spec version of the car, 58695-A, will come with the HW ESC. That's this kit. The standard kit (show on the Tamiya USA site), 58695, will be removed from the site soon.

Just confirmed with Tamiya on both things. HH probably has it listed without the -A since the original part number came out way before Tamiya decided to include the HW ESC. Also, if you purchased this kit from any North American distributor or dealer it will indeed come with the ESC. So you should be good. However, if yours doesn't come with an ESC, I would contact Tamiya with your HH invoice and let them know.

Maybe you should take the time to study the instruction so you know what goes where it’s ok not to know but don’t guess Btw it’s good they have fitted a better switch to the hobbywing speed controller

Probably, but was I wrong? The OG actually had 2 servos, one for steering and one for throttle. So, in reality, 2 of the 3 places I mentioned actually ARE for servos. Granted, not anymore but, you know, I was still sort of right :)

More added value with the hobby hobbywing esc...just goes to show how outdated tamiya esc are. They should be offering a 2s, waterproof brushed esc...not a brushed/brushless that isn't waterproof.

Agreed. I do think a waterproof ESC should be, at this time in the industry, a standard thing. Everything basher/introductory should be waterproof (I understand racing level stuff not being WP but that's another discussion). However, the fact that Tamiya even includes an ESC and motor is something outside the norm for true kits, so it not being waterproof is something I can live with. On a side note, the TBLE-04S is a 2S capable ESC, even though they don't say 'LiPo' compatible. It's a Japan thing. They don't condone LiPo's over there so most have to use NiMh, but they also understand that this ESC is not for the Japanese-only market.

I have to think Tamiya might of given this kit to someone who knows how to build this kit and know the tyres are called "Pin & Oval" and how the rear cage fits or where the servo goes. Or do some reserach first.. Give it to Glenn Tamiya Legends.
