I vividly remember 12 year old me trying to convince my mom that I needed the grasshopper but with the hornet upgrades. It was slightly more money that way but I absolutely loved those paddle tires and also thought the wingless hard shell would be more durable. I got it all Christmas Eve and stayed up all night building. Moms!!!

I started with a Grasshopper and loved that car. I beat it up good. A couple years later I was able to get into a Thundershot and that car was completely next level. My best memories of that car was taking it to school for some after school races. There were some kids who would bring some Tyco RC's and they thought they were the shit, the look on their faces when I pulled my Thundershot out of my duffel bag and tossed it on the ground and it just squatted, was priceless. Those kids had never seen hobby level RC cars and had no idea. Needless to say it was ass whoopins for everyone. This video has inspired memories and maybe a rebuild after 30+ years. Thanks.

That is the perfect resto candidate. I still don't have a Thundershot only a Terra Scorcher, maybe one day! I still remember my first Tamiya, it was a second hand Grasshopper. Later, actually when I started my first real job at 16, I bought a Boomerang kit. Happy days! 👍

My first was a Grasshopper. My Aunt was very generous at the time. The next was the Hot Shot that I kept for all these years and found original parts to restore it before the re re came out. Some of us know exactly what you are talking about, the childhood years at the hobby shop, sifting through the old catalogs. I still build and restore old Tamiya kits to step back into time.

My 1st RC was a Blazing Star my Dad bought one for each of us to build together during the time he was fighting cancer which eventually took his life. I still clearly remember sitting at Mum's dining room table with my Dad for hours building them piece by piece together, Mum wasn't too impressed with this on her table haha. Luckily I still have mine complete apart from the old mechanical power draining speed controller which use to drain the NIMH battery in about 7 minutes lol. It's been sitting in my Mum's attic for many years untouched until I brought it home and revived it last year and drove it. It now sit on the shelf in my rc room unwashed as it was for all those years 👌. I'm so lucky to have this Tamiya & the priceless memories. I'm really looking forward to seeing yours finished mate, Keep the Tamiya dream alive 👍🦘🇦🇺

I first saw the thunder shot in Beatties, Blackpool. What an effect it had on me as a young lad. The man behind the counter dropped it from two foot and it just softly stopped dead. I’ve never had one but always loved it. Thanks again for the vids. Top man. 👍👍

When I was 11 I saved enough paper route money for a Lunchbox. That was 1986, and to this day I still remember the Tower Hobbies 800 number by heart. Of course, it took me a little longer to buy that Futaba Attack-R radio, but I got it going. GREAT VIDEO!!!

This brings back some memories. My first Tamiya was the Tamiya Thunder Shot (Quick Drive Series). I couldn't afford the kit version. But I would go in to Beatties model shop every time we my mum took me into town. I would look up longingly at those cars. Good times. Thanks for making these videos.

Christmas 1984, I was 14, Finally talked my parents into it, they took me a local hobby shop to pick one out but it had to go under the Christmas tree! They bought me everything, car kit, 1 battery, 15 minute battery charger and a futaba radio. I chose a Hornet! It all got wrapped up and put under the tree! 2 weeks before Christmas. Had it put together and was in the backyard running it by dinner Christmas Day ( unpainted ) 😂 was painted 2 days later!

Ah the cherished memories of the first Tamiya 😊. Mine was The Blackfoot for my Birthday my dad assembled it for me. Which I wanted to do myself,But he figured that I just wanted to run it..But it was ok I did all the work and mods on it from that day forth..lol Now 30+ years later I just finished redoing a original Blackfoot with modern mods and a mild brushless system :)

My friend i remember buying a used Tamiya Thundershot that simply needed a small fix to steering, costing me about £10, and i got the car, Full radio, 1 x 1400mah blue Tamiya pack, and Riko Fast Charger for guess how much......? £15 !!! I kid you not !! Best buy ever !! I loved that car !! I remember it was snowing in Liverpool at the time and me ripping around this Thundershot in the snow !! Awesome memories pal !! My first Tamiya and loved it, brought mine ready to run. Late 80’s I used to get £50 for Xmas and saved my paper round money and put the extra £30 at Xmas and my parents got me the Thundershot. Only had one set of rechargeable AA battery’s for it and it was hours and hours to charge for 20mins of fun but what fun. Probably cos I never ran it on low always on high. Lol

I think everyone who is into Tamiya as an adult can relate to your childhood memories. I grew up watching my older brother run his hornet around which he eventually passed onto me. My first new kit was the Golf V5 which is probably a bit of an unusual choice but I loved touring cars as a kid and always wanted the BTCC Volvo (which they had in the window of Modelsport for years if you remember!) but by the time I wore my Dad down into buying me a kit the Volvo was discontinued so I got the Golf instead. I also had a late 90's Tamiya guide book which me and my little brother wore to shreds looking through it for hours, I used to stare at the seemingly un-obtainable hop up carbon chassis sets and think about how I would never be able to own one but with the help of ebay I've more than made up for that over the last few years.

The ThunderShot was my first 'hobby grade' car :) Was a lovely upgrade from my QD ThunderShot. Bought it 2nd hand in a big cardboard box with 3/4 of a Hornet as well. The shell was hand painted in a lovely copper colour! I seem to remember that the points of the chassis tub where it attached to the gearboxes were a real weak point. Getting spares was a 2 or 3 week process: 1) break something at the Sunday race meet (Glasgow club indoor at East Kilbride) 2) have to wait until the following Saturday to visit model shop to order part 3) wait another 1 or 2 weeks until the shop received the part 4) stay up late at my mates house rebuilding the car on the Saturday night eating cheese sandwiches and liters of Irn Bru from the SodaStream 5) go to club on the Sunday.... and then go back to step 1) !!!!! Happy, happy times and the reason Tamyia has a special place in my RC heart - was the first ;)

Great video thanks Glen. After 2 or 3 years of running, smashing, my Nico "Super Lobo" my parents finally said I could get my 1st Tamiya kit. I got the Falcon (man I wish they would reproduce it!) My mate Zane (who was pretty expert at rc"s) and I assembled it over a couple of days, I think we were 12. Great memory. Around 10 years ago I dabbled back into Tamiya, and brought a few second hand cars off Trademe NZ, one was a $120 nz Thundershot in not bad condition. I ran those cars every now and then but didnt really get immersed back into the hobby, I then foolishly gave them all away to kids in my street, I really regret giving the Thundershot away! Such a nice looking rc.. Though im sure those kids were stoked to own their 1st Tamiyas and hopefully still have them in another 20 years... Cheers Matt Gauranga

Mate, my first Build is as etched in my memory as yours... 1984... 19 years old, I went into my Hobby Shop looking for Model Railroading supplies as usual. Always passed the RC section, but nothing ever grabbed me, maybe the Blazing Blazer (EXPENSIVE!!) - till that day!! I saw a brand new Bugga - called the FROG. The guy in the Shop said it would be the most advanced Rig at my local track. He explained it like he was selling a Ferrari... "Single transverse Front Spring with double Arm Suspension, lay down oil filled Rear Shocks and a Trailing Arm rear suspension"... "Lexan 'unbreakable' Body, and easy change Batry" MY GOD!! I simply HAD to have that! 😉 It was fun to Build. It was my first introduction to the joy of building Tamiya Kits. I had no idea that day that I just got a new Hobby! 😲 I remember my Mum saying "YOU PAID $66.00 FOR A TOY CAR!!??" 😂😄 That WAS a LOT of money in 1984... I tried to justify it by telling her that the Blazing Blazer was $122 and the Bruiser was $215. No avail. (Could you IMAGINE if you could get either of those Trucks for THAT price now??) 😲😲😲😲 New and sealed Kits of course. That's me story!! 😉 Please stay SAFE! 😷 Carmine ✈🚂🚙

My first RC model kit was the Avante 2001 (I still have the original box...). I got it for Christmas or my birthday. Can´t remember exactly (a good 25 years ago now...). Originally I wanted the Avante (not the Avante 2001) but my mother mixed up the 2 blue 4WD Buggies and that´s how my special interest in RC models was initiated. It still makes as much fun today as back in the old days...Actually even a bit more as I know now my way around rebuilding a diff, which tuning parts make sense, gear ratio, good quality ESC and batteries etc. and of course the superb brushless technology :) But back in the day - a 540 Sport Tuned motor and oil shocks and a proper steering servo with a Futaba Attack Tx was a BIG upgrade from the cheap toy RC cars (Nikko etc.), that I was used to. I remember how scared I was during the build of the Avante 2001 to make a assembly-mistake ;_) That stress is fortunately gone now :)

Hi Glenn, my first Tamiya was the Ford F-150 Ranger. My parents bought it for me in early 1984, when I passed the entrance exam to senior school. Can't be many owned-from-new cars older than this! It's been driven plenty, but carefully, and is still in really good condition. A bit of recent TLC and it's going better than ever. Just bagged a 54897 ball diff from Otley Modelsport, so I'm excited to see what difference that makes to the handling. Keep making those vids, Glenn, and stay safe everyone 😷

Brilliant video and truly a great story. Fair play on the full upgrade spec upon restoration and why not. Absolutely the memories are priceless and fuel the hobby. I started with the Hornet while my bro got the Falcon together one xmas many years ago. We club raced on Sundays in Kent during the very early 90’s still wet behind the ears. We tried to take on RC10’s and Schumacher Cougars indoors and outdoors. Although we weren’t very good we were always learning and although we lacked ability and handling (and battery life). We were constant turning-up every race meeting and finishing every race to finish the season with top ten trophies.

My first full build was a CR-01 Unimog... I was always interested in RC, especially Tamiya, as a kid, but never got any til I was grown. I bought a used TT-01 and did a tear-down and rebuild, but my first full kit from scratch was the CR-01 I built next.

I had a thundershot, the best car I ever had. One thing I can remember is the fixations on the chassis holding the gearboxes were prone to cracking. Apart from that, it was amazing, I remember that while running it had this lowdown look to it, like it was sticking to the ground. Apart from that and the front plate, I never had any problems. Stay safe Glenn. PS make this build a real epic build ❤️

lol, exactly the same here mate - the amount of superglue I poured on those weak fixation points in vain was comical!

Having been in a similar position a few times over the years, I will build one all-out pristine car for the shelf (never touches the dirt) and a basic beater/runner car with the less perfect leftover bits. Most recently, I've been able to do this with the original Kyosho Ultima. I always like to have at least two examples of each car in my collection; one for the shelf and another to run around the backyard track. Anyway, that's my two cents. Thanks for another excellent video Glenn. Stay safe my friend. Cheers!

Fab video Again Glenn. Nice projects there. First up was a second hand BF, back in 92/93, then a brand new bush devil, followed by the holy grail (to me) TB01 Evo V1. Now TT01s and TT02s. Loving being here. Thanks for all your films.D. 👍🏻😊

Love the thunder shot. There were a couple of these that raced at my local little club BITD. They were rapid cars on the straights but understeered a bit in the corners. Your story of a modified motor in the stock class brings back memory’s of the ticks we were all at. Some of us ran a hidden 7th cell so they cars were running 8.4v but it looked as if it was just a standard 7.2 saddle or stick pack. My first Tamiya was a Wildone back in 1986. I have managed to get vintage replacements for all my cars from BITD apart from the Wildone. Your recent Video on the FAV and the Wildone amazed me on how much detail I could remember about the car. I even down to the two sizes of pinion that were available. Keep up the great content. Looking forward to seeing this one finished.

I never had a new build :( but it didn't matter as all my mates at the time were spoilt and too lazy so I built theirs,959,black foot, lunchbox, hornet :) I had a bigwig that I bought second hand and sprayed really badly in black paint that I painstakingly removed, took about a week!!! And the decals even came out like new as like the day they were put on! Same with the wheels, showed it to who I bought it from and he was so upset that he tried to grab it so I drove away whilst running myself!!! I paid £100 and it looked brand new apart from the 7.2 lol so funny looking back on it now:)

Love it. Commented on you Bigwig video, won alot of races with that model, was quick with a technipower motor and Tamiya's 8.4 v battery ran it with boomerang wheels turned inside out. (Made the car alot wider)

My first car was the original 88 Avante and I still have it to this day... but my first go with a Tamiya as a child was the original 1/12 Lamborghini. it was pre-nicad and used 4 C dry cells battery’s, so I stole all the battery’s out of all my brothers and sisters bike lights and flattened them all... my mum went mad and took my pocket money away for ages to replace them and educate me against stealing

Hi Glen!! And good morning!! I'm really happy you got the thundershot!!! Must be a awesome feeling!! Looks like you got a bit of work ahead of you! The good kind!! Just my opinion but go with a red colour in keeping with its hotshot roots. Kinda of homage to it. The red and black seem to go great together. But most importantly is have fun with it as I know you will and I can't wait for the results! I'm sure you will knock it out of the park! Thanks and never stop doing what you are doing as always!

Hey Glenn, MY first was the beautiful if underpowered Subaru Brat! I got it for my birthday and saved up we did not have much money! I built it with my dad...well to be honest dad was not at all interested but that car had me developing sleeping problems lol because l could not stop looking at it!!!! I used to stare at it when trying to sleep and would continue looking at it as long as l could before school! I did end up racing it at a local club but obviously soon realised this amazing looking truck was no match for much on track with its 380 motor and heavy weight and friction shocks and before long my beautiful Brat became a high performance Frog and l started getting competitive! The rest is history but yeah l surpose the Brat is the one dearest to me but my favourite is too hard to call....Avante of course has to be in! Plus Boomer, Hotshot, Hornet, Super Champ, Holiday buggy, LB, MP, Big Wig, Blitzer Beetle, Clod, and more recently Top Force! Iol its like picking your favourite child! Glenn l remember the PB mustang and Dog fighter at a club we visited several times and Cat and of course Optimas but for some reason at our Club it was all Tamiya's and good job too those other makes did some great gear back then! Sorry l went on a bit, sat out in the sun in our back yard! Lovely!! Laters buddy. PS nice vid and project Glenn 😁👍

Ah traveling on the bus with my mum and my brother to Kingston Beatties in the mid '80s to buy our first Tamiya Hornet after saving for months if not years. Huge box to carry home! I still have the Beatties bag. I wonder whether kids get that sort of excitement and anticipation nowadays as they seem to have access to more stuff so not much seems out of reach.
Fully Hopped Up!!! Tamiya Thundershot
