Full Front angle video of horse cooling himself down after suffering heat stroke. The pond is about 4 feet deep. the bottom is very muddy and thick. The horse had trouble getting his footing within the thick mud. The horse is fine and suffered no injuries.

With what I know of horses, the horse bolted from something it was afraid of and didn’t notice the pond, especially if the glare of the sun was shining into its eyes and/or off the pond, glad to see the horse was able to get out of it, but I question the handlers who are supposed to know more about horses or how to rescue them. They reacted to the situation as a novice would have, unable to make a quick decision. What they also needed was a roper who could throw a rope around its head and help the horse keep its head above the water better and possibly keep the horse from moving around so much and tiring itself more, thus helping others, being easier in putting the halter on it. It wouldn’t have taken as long for the rescue, but one never knows how scared animals will react to things around them, it’s a toss up. Also, I’m wondering if any of them were talking to the horse to help calm it down or call to it to come to them. This horse was about ready to give up. All animals need love and need to be shown love. Many race horses are only commodities to be used and then tossed away as garbage because they lose races and also many lack the love they need to stay alive. Love means everything. I also noticed how many times this horse shied away from someone instead of going towards someone. Horses aren’t stupid creatures and each will respond and react to those willing to trust them and knows them best….this horse was frightened and literally lost all sense of direction, thus needed a calm voice, talking to it, and helping guide it. 🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

@@jamanne2504 OMG no it's not! Read the description of the video. The bottom was very sticky. Two guys risked their lives and went into the water. A vet was there (the woman in white top and jeans) and was right there assessing the horse's condition. She gave him meds administered on the left side of his neck and made sure his legs got wrapped to protect them. They got him into the equine ambulance as fast as they could while giving him time to catch his breath.

No, the horse was in medical distress with a condition called “tying up “ which is a medical emergency. That’s why it staggered and had trouble walking. The vet recognized this immediately and pulled blood work right away to know the severity of the condition, which is good because it was pretty severe

The horse is obviously not going any where near people, so love the guy that goes to the top of the pond when the horse heads that way to get out of the water, because obviously once he's up there the horse will turn back and stay in the pond. Nice work.

It was thick mud on the bottom and the horse is SORE from pulling it's legs up to walk in it. She'll be sore for days. That took alot of energy walking in that thick mud sucking her feet in. Poor horse never experienced THAT before. Looks like the lady vet gave her a shot to relax her. She'll be ok once she gets a good rest. The mud sucking your feet is SO hard to get out of.

I agree, it must have been extremely difficult for this horse to pull his feet out of the thick mud and much over and over. I actually found an article about this horse years later that explained everything that happened. According to the article the horse "Shipping News" was slightly injured from the incident in this video (also had collapsed of a heat stroke mins prior). So he was rehabbed and re-homed by a Tampa Bay off track thoroughbred rescue. Yay! No more racing or jumping! And is now a regular horse.

I worked with race horses for years and was lucky enough to spend a meet at Tampa Bay Downs. Everyone involved saved this horses life. She was absolutely tying up from all strain of the deep mud. Tying up is dangerous for horses its like having uncontrollable muscle contrations all over your body very painful. The vet was right there to give the correct medw to counteract it.

@@Menace-et3jkou think the dose of Lasix prior to this in that extreme heat 🥵 was worth it , looks like between dehydration, extreme heat, and electrolyte imbalanced was causing significant effects , horse wasn’t just tying up because of the mud, her body was suffering from serious Deficiency from diuretics, heat and exhaustion. She was probably minutes away from cardiac arrest and full collapse, she wasn’t even fighting the drowning as her nose dipped under the water . Working my uncles ranch in TX we cared for these high dollar horses. Transported them to the track and came back when they were done. Used to make all of us insane they know how to use them for $'s jockeys know how to push them but none of them know how to deal with anything outside that track. I seen horses come back with nose bleeds. I seen them hide and give shots you see it all and not a damn thing you can do. We told them when we felt a horse wasn't up to racing day after day and they don't care it's the $'s and glory that they own them.

This horse fell into the pond, she didn't "decide to cool off" and jump in the lake. She was bolting and if you watch, she was looking straight out ahead when she got to the lake and just maintained her speed and ended up in the water. A horse that intentionally wants to go swimming will stop at the waters edge, investigate and slowly walk in. They don't dive in like hyper excited water dogs. They are half ton prey animals with thin easily broken legs, they are cautious by nature unless in a fearful panic. This horse clearly did not realize the water was anything but solid ground. I wonder why she was bolting in the first place.

+Christena R Well, racehorses don't just wander loose around the track wearing not even a halter, my guess would be he managed to snap his halter or bridle and went for a run, obviously not the brightest bulb, he runs straight into the drainage like he thinks it is solid ground. After that he gets a lot of water in his ears, causing significant discomfort and throwing off his balance, probably the reason they sedate him since he freezes up once they fish him out.

I’m absolutely furious after watching this video! Both of these horse were experiencing a dangerous amount of distress, was injured even before jumping into the pond and it’s a miracle both horses didn’t suffer a fatal heart attack while attempting to get out of the pond. I was introduced to a horse and got onto a horse with my Mother holding me when I was a baby. If this had been my horse, there wouldn’t have been any lapse of time before you would have seen me halter and lead rope in my hand and I would be in the pond myself!! When any animal especially horses, are in need of rescue every single handlers need to be extremely careful, patient and gentle throughput the entire ordeal . Consider if you had been in a head on collision in car, every single muscle in your body is experiencing trauma, and your car had entered into a pond. This horse would experience the same unbearable fear, however that horse is at the mercy of a human to safe it’s life?? I sincerely hope both of these horses recovered and this type of rescue will never be handled in the way these two rescue happened.

Horses begin training or are already racing when their skeletal systems are still growing and are unprepared to handle the pressures of competition racing on a hard track at high speeds. One study on injuries at racetracks concluded that one horse in every 22 races suffered an injury that prevented him or her from finishing a race, while another estimated that 3 thoroughbreds die every day in North America because of catastrophic injuries during races.

@thomasfaltejsek
@thomasfaltejsek 9 жыл бұрын
bellasue02 Not really. They can't get any other horses into the water, or it will just chew up the bottom and the banks more. And getting more people in the water will just confuse the horse more. Moving quickly - same. One has to move very slowly, see how the horse is reacting, and make no big moves. And the horse actually is in extremely good physical condition. While swimming and pulling its legs out of the mud for 20 minutes is hard work and the horse is clearly very tired, he's not going to die. As to other comments, a horse with heat stroke would be flat on its back....no. Horses can get varying degrees of heat illness, just like humans. But horses are also very good at dealing with heat when they are this fit an healthy. As for a guy smoking, I guess you have never realized that many people do still smoke...and that they will often take a cigarette when they need to sit there quietly and sort a situation out. That was definitely needed here. The key is to stand still, think, and not lose one's head. These guys were calm and did a good job. You ignored the guys who were petting the horse and handling this PERFECTLY, which means calmly, in favor of trying to make something out of the guy smoking a cigarette. Smokers by the way are not permitted to smoke in the barn or near storage for hay or other flammables. My guess is that the horse got loose - maybe in the stable since he has no saddle on(though is tack may have been removed earlier - horses have been known to mistake the inside rail for an obstacle or jump the inside rail because something else startled them). Horses do inexplicable things when they are loose. That's just how it is. They do very odd things. Jumping in a pond would be one of the more tame things horses have done when they get loose, but with a large heavy animal, that can be very, very dangerous. They basically just don't know where they are going. They see some other horses and they have an instinct to go toward those horses. Some tracks have large tv screens that have confused horses. One tries very hard to not have them get loose. And there are gates and barriers at the track to prevent loose horses from getting out on the track. So not sure what happened here. 'Monitoring' him is something of an exaggeration. You 'monitor' a horse with a stethoscope, thermometer to check his heart rate and temperature. You can only observe the horse from the bank in this situation. But an experienced horse person would see signs of the horse becoming more tired or becoming passive. Use the pond dredger? Are you kidding? It's very important to not put any additional traction or pressure on the horse's legs, or startle him with unfamiliar equipment. The best way to handle it is quietly, slowly, constantly observing how the horse is reacting, and being very, very calm. The horse came out with no serious injuries, though trying to pull its legs out of the mud and struggling could mean its racing career is ended, which it may have been, since it went to the CANTER organization for a new home. Horse was not seriously injured, no humans were injured in the rescue attempt, it ended a lot better than it could have.

That horse was clearly exhausted. Absolutely someone should of went in and helped, it's clear he was having difficulty keeping his head up. He wanted to drop his head and breath but could not because of the water level. I'm surprised he didn't aspirate the water into his lungs and get pneumonia, if the truth was being told.

They should of been more gentler and kinder getting this horse out of the water. And checking it out with love and kindness as soon as it was out of the water. To see if it was seriously injured and see if it can walk ,to give it time rest and time to calm down. Before they started pulling it meanly to walk that long distance . They should waited a few minutes to calm it down and check it out. Then moved it slowly with love and kindness. Instead of pulling and jerking it when it was just out of the water. This could of been handled a lot better. I see it was handled wrong with roughness with pulling and jerking from multiple men at the rope. That was more pain and trauma and suffering all those men put that poor horse through. They could cause more harm and pain to the poor beautiful horse. So glad it's going to be alright and doing well. 💗🙏🕊⚘♥️ They just need to do it with more love and kindness. Not with meanest and roughness and being unkind to the animal..💔😭

If the horse is too overheated and gets himself into the water to cool off, what’s the harm in letting him chill out in the pond? I understand he needs to get “cooled down” exercise-wise and walked out so he doesn’t cramp up or colic etc, but heat stroke kills too. Idk, seems like when he was ready to get out, he got out. Definitely needs better shore edges in the pond, or a much better fence.

Horses go crazy when they are spooked. .unless you know a loose horse personally it is very dangerous to approach because they can weigh upto 1500 lbs depending on breed and they can runover or kick you to death. Horses have extreme side vision and none directly in front. Don't approach any horse if you have no experience. By the time he was caught he was exhausted and in distress. Most of those men were greens keepers and had very little hands on experience with Horses much less a terrified one.

Broken fetlock, owner who took his pants off to go in after the horse did not put it down like a lot of people owning race horses do. Raced 6 furlongs and collapsed. They cooled it down and you see what happened after that. Horse is saying "I told you it was too damned hot and this is the only way I can let you know". Florida in February is variable. It used to be our coldest, wettest month. In later years it has changed. This was ten years ago so it should have been cooler. But, any day in any month can be hot. Around that time there were ten days in a row in January that the weather was really hot. Over 85 degrees ten days in a row in February....The horse is now rehabilitated and is owned by a woman in Pinellas Park FL and her 2 year old rides him with help.
