All college is a for profit scam. This is why the top five colleges every year are always the most expensive ones even though there's no quantifiable evidence whatsoever to prove that an education at Yale is any better than the education at a community college. United States citizens have been convinced that the more a College costs the smarter you'll be when you come out of it which is most certainly not the case. Intelligence is inherent in the human being it can't be purchased. And that's the whole reason these Elite schools were created for rich people that have dumb children and know that their kids won't be able to compete from an intellectual level. This way they can just dump a lot of money on the school and they get a piece of paper that now says their kids are smarter than everybody else. Expensive colleges are just another way for the rich to make sure that the poor can't compete with them as easily. Think about it you know I'm right. No matter how smart you are if you're going for a job and the other person has a degree from Harvard they're going to probably get the job doesn't matter if you studied harder or if you are actually better for the job that piece of paper gets them in the door regardless of actual intelligence or work ethic. 100% scam.

@@tonyhsloanejr Your statement is uninformed and just what the for-profit loan mill traps want you to believe. Colleges are not all the same. Go to collegescorecard.ed.gov and compare tuition and graduation and retention rates. The better schools are somewhat affordable and don't look at students as an easy way to line their pockets. Real schools educate, for-profits or those that were and then became non-profits are the worst offenders. Good luck. Don't let the liars ever take your valuable loan money.

@Video Vagrancy Colleges have always been chasing money, whether they are private or public. They’re businesses first and foremost that’ll do whatever it takes to ensure profits and increase enrollment. They can receive millions of dollars in donations each year from alumni, and will turn a blind eye to any mistreatment a student experiences if they think it’ll ruin their reputation and profits. The “college” that was featured in this story was deplorably corrupt, but corruption runs rampant in all colleges.

To be fare, these for-profit schools routinely pay search engine providers (like Google) to remove negative stories about their school and front-load search results with adds and “fake news” articles about how life changing a degree is. Don’t get me wrong, as a Masters student intent on earning my PhD after, I know the value of a degree and advanced degrees. But I do feel for these people (often times single parents) who are desperate to improve their financial stability by earning an undergraduate degree and get duped by one of these for-profit “schools.”

Wisteria - I agree that Phoenix is not worth your time. I got an email from someone who needed an editor to go over his doctoral dissertation. I agreed and he sent the document to me. I was floored. It could have been written by a middle-schooler. There was no substance to it, it was full of grammatical and punctuation errors, and was basically in shambles. I quoted him 2 prices: a lower price to clean up the grammar, punctuation and formatting only, and a higher price, to do all the preceding plus reword it to make it sound more educated. He chose the lower price. In the end, he got an A on it, and received his doctorate. So, apparently, an average middle-schooler can also get a doctorate from Phoenix

In 1965 I was conned into a computer training 2 year college. The con is that a bank (unknown to me at that time) paid the school for 2 years before I had my first class. I was making weekly payments to the school. After 2 weeks I wanted to know where the computers were - the big ones I had seen in the brochure. There were not any computers. The instructors had day jobs and instructed at night. None of them had any credentials. After 2 months I quit paying. Of course I got the nasty letters about going to jail. I wrote back, OK let me get a lawyer and investigate this school. They never bothered me again. They did not want to be investigated! A few years later the Texas Attorney General shut down this "school" and a slew of similar schools operating the same way. I lost some money but many poor blacks and whites lost a lot more.

I am $80,000 in debt with a public school degree in actuarial science. Actuaries are supposed to make $50k first year out of college and over $100k 5 years in. What they don’t tell ya is that the odds are high that no one will hire you. I’ve been on about 20 interviews and over 150 applications. No job. No internship. I graduated 5 years ago. I should be making $100k and nearly debt free. Instead I barely make minimum payments and live with my parents. My life is hell. DONT GO INTO COLLEGE DEBT FOLKS!

@@weirdflex8158 oh yeah. I passed the first 3. They all take hundreds of hours of studying and a few hundred bucks to take the exam. Most entry level positions required 0-2 exams passed. I talked to professional recruiters who told me passing too many exams would hurt my chances of being hired. They seem to be right as I got less interest after I passed the 3rd exam. Apparently they have to pay you more for each exam passed.

dserenity69 I don't think you understand what you're saying. National accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education equally to regional accreditation. Further, each state decides whether or not a school can legally operate there. By the time a school has reached accreditation, it has already been approved at the state level. Therefore, the school is operating legally and has no reason to be shut down.

I believe all universities and colleges, for-profit or otherwise, should be required to give a disclosure to prospective students that states what the degree costs, the average job placement rate and starting salary for their particular graduates, and a comparison to graduates from other universities in their area with the same or similar degrees. You get more of a disclosure when you sign for a car loan than when you sign up for tens of thousands of dollars in student loans and multiple years of your time spent on a degree. With everyone thinking they need to go to college now in a lot of cases and with a lot of majors all you really get is a whole lot of debt with no meaningful Improvement in your earning potential.

The for profit schools give you absolutely nothing, making you have to start over or get a minimum wage job as if you didn’t do anything. They even take grants from our vets too. I don't recommend for-profit colleges. It's best to go a community college or a 4 year school that is not a for-profit college. The problem with for-profit colleges is many employers don't think very highly of for-profit colleges. If a person has an engineering degree from a for-profit college, many engineering employers won't hire them. There are some engineering employers that will hire people with engineering degrees from for-profit schools, but many engineering employers won't hire people who have engineering degrees from for-profit schools. Many accounting firms won't hire people with accounting degrees from for-profit schools, but some accounting firms hire people with accounting degrees from for-profit schools.

I understand this situation all too well. I did the exact same thing. I was interested in filmmaking since i was a kid. Saw some ads for Art Institute, and got interested, so i called the admissions office and got information on their school. I had no idea what i was doing and i thought for sure my admissions specialist would've just been honest with me about the process of getting accepted and funding my education. Nope, they weren't. They played me like a fiddle the entire time. They knew what i wanted out of life for myself and talked to me as if it were an easy process. They sat me down with tons and tons of paperwork, none of it i could understand. When I'd ask questions, I'd get vague responses. I never really caught on to the scam until a year after i was in school. I saw that they accepted pretty much everyone. I learned for the first time in my life that signing those documents so eagerly and without much thought or skepticism on my part turned into a life with loans i can't get rid of. No matter what i pay it just stays the same amount. All because i didn't question the process more closely, it happens. It's no one's fault but my own. I own that shit. I don't blame Ai at all. They were in the business to make money and they did so with people like me who didn't question anything. I signed documents that essentially allowed them to fund my schooling with private and federal loans. The entire thing. In fact they were so nice to me that they gave me a laptop computer and i had no idea it was out of my own pocket. If i could go back to my younger self I'd have refused and went with a local community college or a trade. I'd have spent time researching instead of being wide eyed and dumb, excited for anything that acknowledged me and made me feel like a winner. In the end they got me. I allowed it. To this day i still own the loans, and i say to other young people to not ever fall prey to these kind schools. Always make sure you can afford to go to college if that's your dream. Make sure you arent getting screwed and don't be afraid to say no, ask questions and a lot of them. Make them wait to sign anything and read all documents before signing. If you can't understand the terminology being used in these documents then ASK. If you still can't get results then do yourself a favor and find something better that won't charge you so much money. There are options and better ways of achieving your dream. Take control of your life and take responsibility for yourself. I did a dumb thing. That's on me. Own it.
