Really like this lens, previously had tamron 70-300 which had much worse AF and optics, this one surprised me with so good aberration control, even at high contrast scenes almost 0 aberration, on 200-600 and 70-350 had way way more aberrations.

there may be difference between the kind of optical stabilisation for still and video. So or stills whats the lowest shutter speed you could confidently go without shake? and what's the best mode 1 or 3?

My biggest reason for getting this lens is birding, the hummingbird and hopefully eagles too. Did you use a monopod or all handheld for the shots? 😀

Sigma 100-400 DGDN vs Tamron pt2: I find the aperture range really looks to favour the Tamron assuming it's equally as sharp as the Sigma: F5 - 240mm on T and only 111mm on S, F5.6 - 390mm! and 231mm(if the Sigma did this it would practically be the equivalent of a 5.6 lens), F6.3 - 490mm and 400mm, F6.7 - 500mm .. how often are those 10mm vs the extra light going to be needed? Where I live the extra light is much needed to keep the ISO down and SS up

good review, I'll stay tuned....thinking about this tele lens for my Sony A6400, photographing animals such as deer, elk at 300-500 yards away. Would this be a good choice?

Has Tamron fixed the dust sucking issue of the other Tamron extending zoom lenses? Sigma is said to have fixed this on their lenses.

Sigma 100-400 DG DN vs the Tamy pt3. I got the Tamron to try against my Sig 100-400 DN with my A6600. Well ... long story short I returned it the next day. The Tamron was just plain soft at any focal length. Maybe it was a bad copy and might try again when more copies are available?

Stefan talks about the aperture changing when the fl is reduced very slightly, but I think this is an illusion. The diameter of the aperture might change very slightly, but the ratio will obviously be almost the same. All that changes is that the calculated f ratio is rounded to a different 1/3 stop. The true f-ratio will only change gradually as you zoom through the full range, but the calculated ratio will jump discontinuously.

The difference between F6.3 and F6.7 is 1/6th not 1/3rd stop. Great review!

I have this- i have 4 days left if i want to return it- been thinking about the 150-600 sigma all day! For a few hundred more i get 100mm more and the filters are 95, which all mine are 82, so that sucks- not sure if its worth the exchange??? In 3 days it becomes a keeper….0

I too want to see it compared to the Sig 100-400 DN on the A6600. At some $700 Cdn more than the Sigma its got to have as good IQ and better AF than the Sigma to convince me otherwise with the extra weight too, you really have to consider the 200-600 but I use the 100-150/200 range of my Sigma a lot and would miss that. It's interesting to note that the Tamron 150-600 G2 is some $200 cheaper than the 150-500 and not much heavier.

It has to meet all the requirements and very well to justify such a difference in value, I still have in mind the sigma 150-600mm + sigma MC-11 adapter, this combo holds up well in terms of results and value.

Same, I’m thinking of selling the sigma for this one. I just bought the Sony 200-600 but I like how compact this is if it performs better than the sigma. The sigma is good for still but is hit or miss for fast moving subjects

It annoys me people moaning about f6.7 aperture. It’s only at f6.7 at 500mm. It’s at f6.3 at 499mm

very difficult for a 150mm lens to do so. Dont think such a tele lens exists which does f4.5 at 150mm, or at lest it must be impractical for them to make.

I have one and I find the sharpness is terrible at 500mm, its blurry in fact, ive got latest firmware in camera and lens, and using tripod. I also tried various stabilisation settings

I m not happy with this lens. It’s ok for subjects that don’t move. I was out photographing eagles and it focused on everything but the eagle and the eagle was blurry in the photos. I’m a true believer in you get what you pay for. I’m going to return this lens and get the more expensive Sony 100 to 400, as I heard someone say, buy it nice or buy it twice.

I'm truly disappointed about this lens by tamron. It's not even as sharp as Canon 100-500, seen in a review, while it is heavier!Sigma 100-400 wins easily! Also sony 200-600 is now a bargain!

I cannot confirm that. I own the RF 100-500. It is sharp, yes, but the Tamron combined with an a7R III/IV or A1 is also incredibly sharp. I've seen RAWs out of the a7R IV and was really impressed. Due to the fact that Canons Sensors (even from the R5 which I own as well) are not performing as good at higher ISO compared to the A1/a7R III and only equal to the a7R IV which has extra 16MP (26,1MP which makes the crop mode of the a7R IV a free teleconverter without loss of optical quality and light) compared to the R5, the Tamron definitly wins here. Also keep in mind that you can also stop down the Tamron to F7.1 to get more sharpness. The Canon doesn't even offer F6.7 at 500mm. The Sony 200-600mm wouldn't even fit into my backpack by the way and the Tamron will be lighter if I take off the tripod mount. The Sigma 100-400mm isn't even weather sealed and also not soooo sharp. Also the AF of the Sigma isn't the fastest on the market, while Tamrons linear motors are incredibly fast. I own the 70-180mm which has that motor and it's focusing without any noticible delay. Haven't seen such a fast AF before, not even on a DSLR thru the viewfinder with sports-lenses. Check out some real world RAWs, you will be impressed about the details. I've preordered one for myself in addition to the Canon 100-500mm.

@@StefanMalloch I agree, but I'm still disappointed, cause the price difference doesn't justify enough to encourage me buying it over the incredible Sony 200-600 specially considering it's hefty weight. I prefer to choose the native options when the third party doesn't give me much more. And in a long telephoto lens for me, more means being considerably lighter. Tamron did a great job with 70-300 and 70-180 they are so lighter than the other options and the quality is not sacrificed optically at least. Sony G 200-600 and GM 100-400 both accept teleconvertors which is a real thing and both are optically better and will track better for sure. The big surprise is canon RF 100-500 is giving 50mm more in range while is 300g lighter than this Tamy lens. I hope Tamron comes up with another tele zoom or even a prime being reasonably lighter.

@@schildzilla I do agree with most of your words, I just can't justify the heft of this lens campared to canon rf lens. And in the video comparison I saw which was in French and I couldn't understand at all but obviously Canon was clearly sharper at 500mm on R5 than Tamron in A1. Maybe not a reliable source though, so I'm so keen to see your results with your own combos if it be possible for you to post in your channel, thankfully.

@@networm64 The Tamron is only 195mm heavier than the Canon 100-500mm (1725g vs 1530g without tripod mount). That's not soooo much. (2 blocks of chocolate) I also wouldn't trust on reviews where someone uses an Adobe program for reviewing RAW's to show details and sharpness. Adobe sometimes is horrible. The A1 is too new to be supported 100% properly. The R5 had the same problem with Adobe in the past when it was too new but the reviews have not been updated when this was fixed. I don't like Adobe at all. There are better programs. Also for example this review here says that the AF is not very good but I've seen some reviews with birds in flight (also very fast swallows) that were closely all in focus if he was even able to follow them fast enough and the hit rate has been higher than with the Sony 200-600 as well. That reviewer said that the AF can hold up with the Sony 100-400mm. Considering that the teleconverter option with the 100-400 only gives you 60mm more that with the Tamron but you will lose very much light (forced F8 or to be more realistic to get back the loss of detail its more about F11 in my experiences with all other lenses I had - 2 stops are the minimum for compensation also with the Canon RF 100-500 + 1.4X TK) and also the AF speed and accuracy is affected. So the Tamron wins here again with the extra 100mm. Forget about the 2X converters, they will push the lenses into diffraction blur that often cannot be corrected by the aperture, but only makes the problem worse. My Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS II with the 2X TK needed to be stopped down from F5.6 to F8 to be acceptable sharp and after F11 it did get even worse. That's why I prefer high MP sensors for telephoto lenses instead of teleconverters. I had the Sigma 60-600mm recently and honestly, I'll better take a second lens with me instead of a lens that isn't performing very well at the wide angle anyway. 100mm vs 150mm is not a big step. My Tamron 28-200mm and the Tamron 150-500mm will be a good team in the future. One point might definitely go to the Canon: The stabilizer is very good/smooth for filming. I've tested it recently with the 1.4X teleconverter. I hope I will receive my Tamron this week and can compare both by myself. But I expect they both will perform nearly equal.

@@Francisco_Otero of course, but that's a completely different issue. Some will want the extra reach and the ability to use teleconverters, while others will want a more compact and less expensive lens. Tough decision.
