I have bought this lens last year just for astrophotography and everybody thought I was crazy. Turns out, it was not a bad decision at all. I confirm the points the author makes in this review. I do have some additional comments though: - The lenshood is actually very valuable, do not throw it away but use it every session. It keeps out stray light, and more importantly, it's a significant barrier against dew formation. - The focus is indeed very sensitive and hard to get right. I recommend everyone to get a 'microfocuser'

Bro, i cant tell you enough how valuable your videos and insight are. As a newer AP enthusiast and a reg photog making the transition over. I used my Zeiss batis 85mm on (it has ED glass so i figured-why not give it a whack). Got great results from a lens i normally use for art portraits. You are An everyday shooters godsend my dude 💚

I recently had the idea of investing in this lens vs a traditional telescope for deep sky photography, it’s true that it has some weaknesses compared to a conventional scope such as focus creep, but honestly the specs on paper are more than suitable for astrophotography especially with a high quality GOTO mount! The fact that it can also be used for non-Astrophotography is also a huge plus! Glad you’ve created this video to further instill confidence in my temping decision.

Hey Walt, thanks for the vid. I used the G1 when I was first getting into asto. Its a solid lens. Especially if you can pick it up 2nd hand on a deep discount. I captured M33 with the Tamron at 450mm. It turned out just as good as with a dedicated OTA costing 2x as much. ~Clear Skies

What a great review. I have this lens and I shoot Astro using a MSM and a z7 body. The combo comes short of 3KG. I got my own workflow now, and as an Astro noob, I’m very happy about the results. tracked by the MSM I can get 10s shots without any trails, so my flow requires hundreds of shots for good Nebulae detail. I shoot without the hood, I disable the lens vibration and I fine tune the focus using test shots in an IPad using the SnapBridge app before starting the intervalometer. Amazing shots, thanks for sharing.

Dear Walt, I totally agree in your review. I do own the Sigma 150-600 which is compareable to the Tamron. I use my telephoto with my A7sa for astro and with my A7iii for day time. I do also love the wide field of useability. Packed this together with my Star Adventurer, it is my lightweight and quick set up when I am on holiday. Even a combination with my M-GEN is possible. Very great and once again thank you for your great summary. Yours Philipp from Germany

Fellow 150-600 G2 owner here! I originally got the lens for wildlife photography since that’s my main area of focus. Got into astro a few months ago and it’s a great tool for that as well! Balancing/polar alignment is by far the hardest part and like you said in the video I only get 20-25 second exposures on my Star adventurer (if I’m lucky). Granted I don’t have a dovetail bracket so that’ll be the next purchase. Aperture is also not ideal but more total exposure time can help reduce the impact of it. Really the main advantage is flexibility. I can shoot whatever deep space targets I want aside from whole constellations or very tiny galaxies/nebulae. And it’s a great all around lens for daytime use too. This will be my “telescope” for a long time! 10/10 would recommend someone get a zoom lens like this before a fixed focal length telescope!

Brilliant video, thanks for posting it. I feel really motivated. My daytime photography is soccer so I have a 150-600 sigma lens on my Cannon. I've just bought a startracker so wondered what the chances are of using the lens on it. You have confirmed its possible and produced some great photos of my favourite parts of space. Looking forward to getting out. Just need a tripod now. I thought I was going to be able to mount it on my normal tripod but no chance so I'm waiting for a new one to arrive :-)

Great video Walt, and much of what you said - not surprisingly - is equally applicable to the Sigma 150-600m Contemporary Zoom that was my primary astrophotography lens for use on my Nikon D850. But, the Sigma is heavier than the Tamron and, when paired with the D850, guide scope & cam, dovetails, cables...was around 9 lbs. I even used it with the Sigma TC-1401 1.4X teleconverter, admittedly at a cost of slight image degradation and and even slower lens. But, with careful balancing and good cable management, despite being well over the 50-60% max payload for recommended astrophotography payload weight, I still managed to get exposures of 12 minutes (maybe 13 on good nights) that were trail free, although more commonly shooting at around 6-8 minutes. That's with guiding from an ASIAir Pro on a Sky Watcher Star Adventurer Pro. As you said, for such setups a long dovetail plate is critical for achieving optimal balance of the DEC axis, and although some do use ball heads for mounting their gear, the heightened center of gravity (CoG) that introduces will significantly impact the ease of balancing the payload. For the Star Adventurer Pro, the beauty of the dovetail mount design of the counterweight arm is that it can be raised or lowered in the saddle on the face of the mount, to effectively control the CoG. But, a ball head adds bulk and weight I try to avoid, as sounds true for you also.

So I purchased a sigma 150-600mm 2 weeks week and it’s great but couldn’t balance it on a ball head because the camera+lens is quite heavy. So I just mounted it straight on my SA mount and works fine. Only started astrophotography a month and learning a lot through ur videos and they’re very fun & informative!! Keep it up

Ditch the ball head for a good fluid pan and tilt head it's going to save your sanity and will keep you from getting extremely frustrated/quit astrophotography. I managed to get hold of two video tripods with pan and tilt heads that are a bit heavy for carrying out in the field but the stability is worth it when using a big lens like the sigma 150-600mm contemporary I have that same lens and I have really enjoyed it. Two pieces of equipment I would suggest are a lens heater and power pack then a good remote trigger to help avoid vibration, it offers more options that the built-in timer can't.

But i already have it voor shooting wildlife and i always say. The best gear is that what you carry with you. I am lokking into the pentax gps module so ik can also shoot tracked without a startrakker. So ik can shoot the nightsky on hiking trips with only the basics.

regarding the problem with tough focus ring, try the Canon app for remote camera control. You can actually use the app to focus (switch the lens to AF mode, use the app to find the proper focus, once you are done, switch the lens back to MF mode). It's really great feature of the app, because you do not need to physically touch the camera, so you do not introduce any shaking, which makes focusing with any focus ring more difficult. Since I found this feature of the app, I always focus with it, it's much, much easier than focusing with the ring on the lens.

I have however noticed that my 70-200 lose focus after roughly 100 exposures. I've been thinking that It might be the temperatures (winter time in Sweden - Roughly -5 degrees C). But maybe it's because I don't lock in the focus. Have you experienced focus loss due to temperatures with the Tamron?

Start with getting a star tracker. Something like the iOptron Skyguider Pro (internal battery) or Skywatcher Star Adventurer (AA batteries or AC Power). For a camera, I would recommend a second hand Canon. You might want it astro-modified down the road! Also Canons work well with remote control units like the ASIAIR. For lenses, that Tamron 150-600 is great to start out with! I found mine for a good price on eBay. If you want to go the telescope route, I suggest the William Optics Red Cat, the Sharpstar 61, or the Radian 61.

It works ok and I used it to shoot the 2017 eclipse, but was looking for something with a bit more reach for the 2024 eclipse. Was wondering if you've tried to shoot the sun with this lens, and especially if you've tried it with a 2.0x extender. I’ve been looking at this lens for AP as well as wildlife photography for awhile now. I have a canon 300mm IS L USM as well as the William optics redcat51 that I use primarily. Any idea on how the sigma stacks up against the canon 300? I’m only asking because I might consider selling the 300 to fund the sigma but…? lol. Bad case of the “I wants” perhaps. I like your videos man. Keep them coming. Your Ps videos are great too btw. Any on pixinsight? lol. Not sure if that program is brilliant or evil.

I don't have any thoughts on Sigma because I have yet to get my hands on one. I might try renting one and giving it a shot. And I really don't like Pixinsight. I think the color correction is incredible. Beyond that it's just annoyingly difficult to use. That's probably because I'm just used to photoshop. I recently got a free Photoshop plug-in called "hasta la vista green." It's pretty much the same thing as SCNR in Pixinsight. Although I own both I have yet to find a reason to make the switch.

@@deltaastrophotography I went to try the "Hasta la vista green" a few months back and only after trying to unsuccessfully load it did I realize (doh) that it is only for windows and not Mac. And, of course I run Mac. With your Tamron Lens it would really appear to have some bases covered and you are right about the weight of lens vs the telescope, focal length to focal length the lenses are impressively light. My Canon 300 is nearly as sharp as my Redcat and it too uses Fluorite so it is quite good with color correction. No magenta stars. I have sold off most of big and heavy scopes and mounts etc as I didn't use them as much as the lighter and easier to actually use setup that I use now which is the Star Adventurer. For daytime use I use a Canon 70-200 L USM lens (for a zoom) but the non IS version and for AP it is amazing as well on my 90d. Pixinsight I have had for awhile and have tried to use it exclusively for image processing. Then, after a couple o' hours of hair pulling and teeth gnashing I break out the Scotch. I cannot seem to fully wrap my head around the program either. In some ways it is very simple and straight forward and in other ways I think that it was created in the 9th circle of Hell. Oh Dante you devil... that was a surprise. I use Ps most of the time now and especially when I just can't seem to get (ah pixel math, pixel math) it done in Pixinsight. I actually started processing with Affinity Photo to be honest and your tutorials with Ps have been a great help as in Affinity I know how to do a lot of things but they are different enough to not be able to connect the dots perfectly from one program to the other. So, keep up the good work and we out here appreciate what you are doing on your tube.

I've used this lens with great success for wildlife and was considering using it for Astro too. Why would you not use a lens hood though? It can stop stray light from hitting the lens from the sides. Another option is using a Tamron 100-400. It saves a lot of weight and size. On a Nikon crop, you'll still get a 600mm FL.
@deltaastrophotography
@deltaastrophotography 2 жыл бұрын
The reason I don't use the lens hood is that when I'm doing 3 minute exposures at 600mm, even the slightest bit of movement can ruin the entire photo. The hood with that particular lens is extremely large and basically acts as a wind sail. On a good calm night it doesn't really matter.

And now to an aching question, doubt, conundrum, possible next video idea ; ) Can you use the ioptron skyguider to somehow polar align, when Polaris is not visible, like, say, when the NCP is at about exactly 10.5 degrees north lat? And, let's say, you have a bunch of coconut trees, and 4-5-story buildings obscuring the NCP, or worse, your NCP is totally blocked, say, your only celestial gateway is a balcony facing anywhere but north! Just your regular near-equatorial third-world problems : ) Can you use something "relatively" cheap, instead of a full-on go-to mount, like the skyguider or star adventurer, that doesn't have dec control for polar alignment, with a laptop or wireless desktop connection, or asi air or astroberry or i-don't-know to polar align, at least to some degree of accuracy, when the bloody NCP is frigging obscured by more than clouds?!!! I personally haven't used one, but I think it's very comparable to my Radian 61 which I love. It's my favorite scope to image with.

Great video. Too bad you didn't include showing the balancing process. That would give us an idea on the challenge to balance this lens.
