In this video I do an in-depth comparison of the Tamron 28-200 f2.8-5.6 Di III RXD lens to the Sony and Canon lenses I use to see if I can replace both of them with the Tamron and still deliver good quality.

My current setup:
- Sony a7r3
- Sigma 14-24 f2.8 DG DN ART
- Sony 24-104 f4 G OSS
- Canon 70-300 f4-f5.6 L IS USM + Metabones adapter
One important thing I didn't mention is lack of built-in image stabilization or a AF/MF switch on the Tamron lens. Neither of those matters much for me since the a7r3 has stabilization and you can program a button to switch focus mode.

In my opinion, the a7r3 + a good ultrawide lens + the Tamron is one of the top two options out there for a landscape photographer who does a lot of hiking.
The other setup I mentioned that I would highly recommend exploring is Nikon Z7 ii + 14-30 + 24-200.

Good decision to change subject from those chaotic trees into the more subtle motif. Nice review, thanks!

I think you're going to love this setup more and more the more you use it. When comparing lenses with each other it's easy to get hung up on "comparable sharpness", meaning how sharp one lens is compared to the other, even if the comparable sharpness is lower on a super zoom lens it might still have very acceptable sharpness. When you start taking images and not comparing the images you'll then stop seeing the "defects" of the lens compared to the other lens and just be happy with the resulting images, given they are properly composed in good light. That is one of my take aways from using the Nikon 24-200 for a while now. For me it is the best lens I've ever owned, not because it is the sharpest but because it does everything I ask it to do in a very acceptable manner. I think you'll come to a similar conclusion when you've been using the Tamron 28-200 for a while.

That's what I think too, I really doubt I will notice or care about any relative lack of sharpness in reality. And, less weight / less switching lenses are huge wins! Really enjoying it so far. Now if only there was a magnetic filter system for the sigma 14-24...😅

Thank you for the comparison. I ordered a like new refurbished Tamron 28-200 for $400. Crazy price for this lens! I'll most likely be selling the Sony 24-105. Always needing more range

I follow you, Just ordered the Tamron 28-200, and with my 16-35 Zeiss I think from 16 to 200 is complete for me. Obviously, like you do, I prefer excellent quality in minor range, and a decent over all the rest of the range. I think this choice is the future for amateur photographers.....Tamron is changing everything.....when I used Canon Reflex, It did not exist a lens like this...... YOUR REVIEW IS MAGICAL CAUSE HELP US TO AVOID WEGHT AND SAVE A LOT OF MONEY.

That's similar to what I'm using, 16+35 and 28+200. It's a great minimalist setup, still very happy with it :)

Thank you for the video, I wanna buy a good zoom lens but I don't have a big budget so I 'm struggling which one I should buy between the Tamron and the sony, I think thanks to you I will just buy the Tamron because it is cheaper and more versatile. The sharpness could be fixed to match the sony I guess using some Ai software like DxO PureRAW

Pretty straight forward video man. Interesting. I decided to sell my 24 105 and keep the tamron. The image quality falls a tad bit short of the Sony but the Jpeg colors are better and I cannot stress how awesome it is to have those extra 95 mm ( through the 24mm are missed)
@yuriygarnaev

Agreed, the drop in quality is small and the range coverage is amazing for a single lightweight lens. This + an ultrawide zoom is a great kit for me.

After buying a Tamron 28-200 new from B&H for $649 and making my own comparison, I sold my 4 y.o. Sony 24-105 for $960. One hundred five mm is too restrictive for me as a hiking/ walking lens, so I was using my Tamron 70-180 with a second body mounted with a 35 or 40mm prime. Few of my telephoto shots were made at wide apertures. I was carrying more glass than needed, + a second 650 g body. The 28-200 is lightweight and handy.

@@yuriygarnaev In March I will be touring, walking and hiking in NZ. To complement the 28-200 I'm choosing between my Zeiss Loxia 21 and my Sony 4/16-35 PZ G. They are the same weight. I lean towards the Loxia which can produce night scenes and apertures stars and has f/2.8 for indoors, and such a delight to focus. When I wish for wider than 21mm I use this lens for panorama and vertorama.

@@rphandler That's a tough call. For landscapes I love the 16-35 and f4 is okay even for night images with the dynamic range of the a7r3, but indoors is another story -- not something I have any familiarity with I'm afraid.

I appreciate the in-depth review, but I have to mention one thing.The 28-200 is fantastic, just as the trifecta of 17-24, 24-70, 70-180. I happen to have a couple of those and they have great optics. However, NONE of them are really suitable for video. IBIS is utterly insufficient. The only solution for them is a gimbal. I happen to own the DJI Ronin SC so OSS is not a priority, however if you don't have a gimbal, but want to do video - DO NOT get the Tamron. Just don't.. regrets all around ;) Yes, you can postprocess with Catalyst, but this takes away a lot of your pixels. You have to keep that in mind when shooting that the FOV loss may be really anything between 10 and 30% depending on how shaky you are ;) This may mean that your meticulously framed image is now ripe for the trash. Been there, done that. Otherwise great lenses. PS. I have the Sony as well... optically it's in my opinion better than the 28-200, but inferior to the 28-70 Tamron. This is a serious balancing game we're playing here ;) I guess it all depends on ones needs. I'm selling the 28-200 it's the weakest of my collection, I'm a little torn about the 70-180. I love the extra stop of light, but it's so damn bulky that I rarely ever take it anywhere anymore.

Would be interest to see the Sony 24-105 upscaled to 200mm 😊 The Sony was considerably sharper than the Tamron. The 24mm are a bonus for the Sony lens as well but you have a ultra wide for that anyway. So you decided to take the Tamron only because the weight despite it’s not that sharp as the 24-105.
@yuriygarnaev
@yuriygarnaev 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good point, you could potentially upscale 105mm shots, but to 300 seems a bit too much, maybe? I will have to try that out though, thanks for the idea!

The name Canon is obviously derived from the physical appearance of their lenses. Always a bit afraid of a grenade coming out of the front element.
