We live in a great time if photography is your thing. The choice of brands and models, plus the quality of today's gear is amazing. Especially if you factor in the depreciation of the money, this lens is literally ultra-cheap for the build quality and images it offers.

Thank you Dustin for this great review as usual. As a matter of fact I finally chose the original G1 version of this lens thanks to your review, and I haven't regretted my choice ever since, took it on numerous trips and it delivers the kind of pictures I was expecting. Now with the G2 version out I do believe that unless one really needs or wants the extra features of the G2, the first version still remains an excellent lens, but if I get a chance to sell it for a good deal the G2 version is a no-brainer again for sure! Keep up your good work!! 👍👍👍

First, big thank you for all your great reviews(both video and written ) Dustin, they’re truly the best ones on KZfaq. I’m here hoping to hear wether Tamron plans to offer this lens on FX mount, I don’t think I would be the only to be super exited to see this G2 version with X mount for my XH2. Any word?
@DustinAbbottTWI

I haven't heard anything yet, but I do think this lens would work on X-mount...though obviousl7 70mm on a 1.5x crop factor is not particularly wide. The focal range isn't as appealing on APS-C.

Great video as usual, always helpful in making actual buying decisions. I have a specific situation, how would you evaluate the autofocus compares to the 135 f1.8 samyang? (if you can recall) because this lens might be looking to replace that in my arsenal, but i would need it to have much better focus, especially in lower light.

Great! Already a review of this great lens! I own the former version, as well as many other Tamron zooms. I own a total of five Tamrons for my Sony FF system. My 150-500 was soft from day one. I sent it in and got it back yesterday. It is now sharp as all my other lenses. I own the original 70-180. It is my go to lens for landscape work. I shot a lot for a project that called for f2.8 and f4 images. I am blown away by the image quality. I can't imagine how much better the G2 version can be.

Hey Dustin, excellent review as always. Im curious, does the improvement of the G2 change any conclusions you drew in the Tamron 35-150 vs 28-75+70-180 video? Speaking of 35-150, any update on where you are in line to get the Samyang version?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 9 ай бұрын
On the Samyang front, I've sent an email to my contact about a week ago, but haven't heard anything back. There could be a holiday that I'm not aware of, but at the moment I have hint of when I'll have a chance to look at the latest Samyang gear. I continue to love the 35-150mm, but certainly the two newest G2 versions of those lenses are improved in many, many ways. There really isn't a bad choice there, though I really love the focal range of the 35-150 as a one lens solution.

It's what one has come to expect on tamron lenses - excellent optics & now digital customization with great value. I wonder how the older lens would perform on the new R5 which one can sometimes find used at less than half the price. Personally, I am tending towards the sony 70-200 f4 macro lens which because of its macro features makes its range very versatile + one can use the teleconverter. With better ibis + better iso performance I am leaning to slightly slower zoom lenses - particularly for longer focal lengths where one has more compression combined with better mfd. It is amazing the range & design of lenses that we have today. And the ability to access their features through reviews such as yours.

According to Tamron the angle of view is 34°21'- 13°42'. The GM II lens is 34° to 12° 30', so the angle of view should be roughly what Tamron claims.

My original 28-75 is externally zooming and has some small dust particles inside just from the zooming action sucking dust in, but there's also a larger fiber that I imagine would show up at high aperture (hopefully not), when I first noticed it I was worried and I was inquiring about getting it cleaned by tamron but on email they suggested this is totally normal for all externally zooming lenses and while they could clean it for me it will just happen again.

I have the original for a year now and IQ wise I was never disappointed. But what I would love to know is if the new lens handles running dogs (especially towards the camera) better for my pet photography and if I can set a custom AF limiter to 1 to 5 or 7 meters (I wish my first gen had an AF limiter). The VC does nothing for me but I do appreciate the extra weather resistance (I shoot mainly outdoors). It's utterly disappointing that it doesn't work with TC because it is ultra compact and easy to carry 360mm f 5.6 would be a dream, but that's the greedy Sony way.

Love the fact it is black. Seriously. I get the need for white paint on the big sports lenses, but there's no need for a white 70-200 other than a branding statement.. It's just too conspicuous. I spent many years shooting news, events, etc. for newspapers and private clients and when I'd have to take out a Canon EOS kit with the white 70-200 vs. a Nikon kit I'd more than just occasionally get comments from complete strangers like "That's a big lens" and "How far away can you see with that thing?" and my favorite "What TV station are you with?" You just don't want random people noticing your equipment that much unless...well, unless you want them to notice. Much prefer stealth black.

The Sony gives you the option of adding TCs, which the Tamron won't. I would probably prefer the Tamron as a portrait photographer, but would choose the Sony as a general purpose jack of all trades.

Does the lens have issues with staying locked on when being zoomed? The previous version as well as every Tamron lens I've tested completely lose focus when zooming, while the the GMs stay on target. Feels almost like the af motors are disengaged during the zoom action. I don't see any reviewer talk about this, and I don't know why.

I actually just did some action tests while testing the Sony a7C2, and it's definitely improved. I'm not sure it is GM equivalent, as I don't do a lot of zooming during bursts, but it is definitely stronger.

@@DustinAbbottTWI I don't even mean zooming during bursts. To reproduce the issue: Set af to af-c and tracking. Lock onto a subject. Keep holding af-on, then zoom. When you do this on a GM, the focus stays locked on target. When you do it on any Tamron lens I've tested, things go out of focus and the system needs to find the subject again.

Lovely video, thank you. Another really nice-looking lens. Sony FE is really spoiled for choice at the long end these days: the new 70-200mm f2.8 GM II; the Tamron 35-150mm; then there is this lens; and then also some really nice primes like: the Sigma 105mm f2.8, Sony 90mm G f2.8 and Sony 135mm GM. I wish I could own them all. Unfortunately, my budget only allows me to own one modern lens at a time. At the moment I have the Sigma 105mm. Nooooo, Dustin.... Don't give me hope... Based on various reviews, opinions etc. I decided to go with v1 of this lens last year. The biggest selling point was the price difference compared to Sony 70-200mm GM. I was able to live without stabilization, with slower focusing and I thought that 20mm shorter focal length won't matter all that much. How little did I know... 1) Why do we buy a 70-200m lenses? To be able to reach beyond the standard zoom lens range. So from my experience, yes that 20mm shorter focal does matter and I wish I had full 200mm at my disposal. 2) I don't know, maybe it's just my copy of the lens, but from 150mm to 180mm I get A LOT of chromatic aberration and REALLY soft mid to far sides of the frame at f2.8, to the point that anything in that range becomes unusable. Increasing the aperture only helps a small bit... So the already shorter 70-180mm becomes 70-150mm... Again, maybe it's only my copy, but how I can prove that it performs worse than what I expected??? 3) The focusing. At certain aperture values, the focusing motor starts "chirping" and becomes audible in videos. This G2 looks VERY promising, but the softness at 140mm makes my "spidey sense" tingling... Currently Sony Poland has a special offer for various products, where you can get 70-200mm GM II for about 2500euro (depending on the currency exchange rates), compared to the usual price of 3000euro. 2500euro is still much more than G2, but I simply lost my trust with Tamron...
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 9 ай бұрын
I would send your lens to Tamron for evaluation. They typically include a good warranty, and there might be something causing that problem. Also, there is no "softness" at 140mm in my tests - it's just not as exceptionally good as some other focal lengths. It's still sharper than most lenses.
