@sofabubba Actually, in Korean martial arts, it is disrespectful to look at the person that you are bowing to. In the Japanese tradition, it is common practice to look at the person your are bowing to. Tang Soo Do is a Korean martial art, so not looking at the person that you are bowing to is the correct approach. Tang Soo!!
@KaptainCanuck8 жыл бұрын
When bowing in Korean arts, look at a person's knees or hips. You are not looking at the person directly, but but you can still see if the person is going to attack. Looking at the eyes for is an attack myth. The best place to watch is the middle of the chest.
@dermenschnr52218 жыл бұрын
Looking at the chest and looking in the eyes is the same.... but looking in the eyes has the side effect that you look proud and self-confident
@KaptainCanuck8 жыл бұрын
+DerMensch NR5 Not really. The eyes lie more and you cannot see the lower limbs as well. Depending on range, a person must move feet first before 90% of attacks.

Thank you for the post! I'm not an active martial arts student, but am in need of a good stretching routine that doesn't require lots of time; the one that comprises part of this video looks ideal. Thanks for sharing it.

i do tae kwon do and in front stance we are taught to keep or back foot at a 45 degree angle. my masters say that keeping your back foot straight can make your balance worse.

***** I have trained both ways. It seems that, in my opinion, it all depends on the person. I have trained with some people that have injuries and can not do the stance one way or another. the most important thing though is the training and training around one's disabilities.

Aislinn G I do agree with you because I am a brown belt in shotokan karate and my sensei tells me that if you have your foot at 45 degrees it improves your balance and gets you ready to lunge forward.

I'm currently taking tang soo do, still don't have the 12 basics down yet only 6. I just started karate a month ago, and I'm white belt with 1 black stripe earned so far. if I get the total of 3 stripes they will move me to yellow belt.

I use to do tang soo do, they were very strict about your feeting positions.. if you foot was off in the slightest angle, they would smack you foot with a foam sword really hard, it may be foam but it was thick and it hurt lol-Ik that sounded very wrong😂

@Deathrydar, thanks for the explanation. My teenage daughter took Tae Kwon Do, and they were taught to maintain eye contact with the opponent. I was surprised when my younger daughter began Tang Soo Do Karate and was told to not look at the opponent, but we weren't told why.

depends on the art. In kempo you look at the person (trust nobody), but in some other karate dojos you don't look when you bow because you should have trust in your fellow classmates; basically, you would never bow in a real fight, but when amongst classmates and instructors you should demonstrate complete trust
@instructorlex82734 жыл бұрын
This is old, but I felt worth commenting. If you are my “opponent” I wouldn’t bow, and certainly wouldn’t look away. If you are my classmate or instructor I will look down. Tang Soo Do in the Dojang is different then facing an opponent.

Most tkd I've seen teaches the back foot to be at a 15 degree angel and not more than 30 degrees. It's usually the tsd and sbd schools tgat teach a 45 degree or greater angle. I personally think this is un natural, hard on the ankle and hampers forward thrust.
