Something about Fletcher's delivery reminds me so much of my Grandpa and the way he used to tell us stories. Sometimes its like for a half second I'm sitting with my brother and cousins in my grandparents family room, fresh out of the pool, while we wait for our parents to stop talking so we can go home. Of course by the time he was mid story we didn't want to go home.

As an American, I could listen to David Fletcher ramble on about pretty much anything he cared to talk about for hours. Train service? Sure. Tanks? Absolutely! The history of motorsports? Why not. The differences in forms of camouflage throughout the ages? Totally. The ideal, the absolute, quintessential _ideal_ of breakfast and how it varies with the months? Indeed.

I believe that applies to British armoured cars of WWII in general. So many were just militarizing whatever they could find idle production capacity for in order to get something into the field now. In many cases this had predictable results. You couldn't do that on the same scale with tanks, they did take elements of regular vehicles to incorporate into tanks but the foundation had to be purpose designed. But a lot of the issues with British tanks can be ascribed to the urgency to get something now rather than taking the time to make something right, like the Americans could do.

Indeed. Panhard vehicles 4x4 and 6x6 are simple but superb at what they do. The AML range of vehicles being much loved by the Foreign Legion rapid deployment forces. In the recent past, the 90mm low velocity gun destroyed many T55 MBT's. Successes down to superior tactics rather than toe to toe slogging matches. The little and nimble AML 90's hitting the tanks in the rear or flanks and dispersing before counter fire can be mustered. Bloody good soldiers those FFL guys.

The Rootes Humber 6 cylinder side valve (L head) engine was used in. Humber and Commer vehicles through to the mid 1950's although less sophisticated than the Daimler's engine it had good low speed torque and was simple and reliable although cylinder head gasket failures were not unknown but as with most side valve engines the gasket was particularly easy to change. Humber were a quality manufacturer who supplied the official cars that were used by British Prime Ministers from the 1930's through to the late 1960's.

These with a couple 7.5mm MG's probably served quite well in Vietnam for things like escorting convoys. They are fairly light and nimble for armoured vehicles on roads that probably aren't the best. And if the other guy doesn't have heavy weapons, the armour should be enough to do the job.

I feel like you're being a bit harsh on the armour. I'm aware of maybe a few guns that 30mm of armour could protect you against, but even in the beginning of the war most guns wouldn't care about 30mm of armour. Its kind of an awkward level of protection. I think there's a logic to halving that armour in favour of less weight
@ghdfhsfnfgbadfhsfh
@ghdfhsfnfgbadfhsfh 2 жыл бұрын
he thinks every vehicle needs to have 100mm of armour or is useless, he does not talk about what it was built for, ie protect for small arms fire, scout, no turret to keep weight down etc its not an assault tank lol
@inisipisTV
@inisipisTV 2 жыл бұрын
@@ghdfhsfnfgbadfhsfh I think both of you didn’t get when he said the Humber has only 14 millimeter of armor Not 30 millimeter. The Dingo has 30 mm. armor on front, runs just as fast than the Humber that’s half the armor so lessening the armor has no real benefits.
@EmergencyChannel
@EmergencyChannel 2 жыл бұрын
30mm of armor is protection against anti-tank rifles and any small arms caliber. 50cal armor piercing will fly right through 14mm of armor. Italians and Germans both had 13mm/12.7mm machine guns that would disable a scout car like this easily. Having enough armor to stop common small arms fire should be the minimum of armor protection. Nobody expects a scout car to survive anti-tank weapons.
@tommeakin1732
@tommeakin1732 2 жыл бұрын
@@ghdfhsfnfgbadfhsfh I'm not hating on him; I just think he's comparing directly to the protection of other vehicles instead of considering the kind of weapons they ended up facing. For early war vehicles, for example, 30mm of armour would be really good, but most AT guns of the time were capable of buttering that up to extended distances. 30mm would protect against autocannons, heavy machineguns, AT rifles, and maybe some outdated AT guns at range - so it's not useless, but I imagine (I don't have data) all of those things combined would be in the minority of things that would end up shooting at British vehicle of the time
@tommeakin1732
@tommeakin1732 2 жыл бұрын
@@EmergencyChannel I agree with more or less everything you said, but I'd say that Axis heavy machine guns were not exactly common (at least not be the standards of the Soviets and the US). Protection against AT rifles is a point to make though, even if AT rifles got less common as time went on. My "angle" is from the benefits of hindsight because this is typically how people talk about ww2 tech. I think David comes from far more of a "what were people thinking at the time" perspective; which isn't wrong, it's just worth noting

14 mm were more than enough against rifle and machine gun calibre enemy fire. Any scout cars should have been driven away at top speed if they faced enemy fire heavier than those.
