Tankers Responding To A 4th Alarm Working Commercial Building Fire -Ephrata Township 2/15/24

Tankers from across Lancaster County, Along with several from Lebanon, a couple from Chester and one from Berks County operated at this massive 4th Alarm Working Commercial Building Fire in Ephrata Township, Lancaster County PA. Tankers worked for several hours shuttling water from 4 different fill sites to the dump sites right outside of Martin's Country Market on PA Route 322. This Video contains almost an hour of Tankers, Engine Tankers and Pumper Tankers responding to and from the fill sites along with a few other apparatus and police vehicles that responded to the incident.

A lot of rural areas don't have fire hydrants they use tankers to put out fires and supply the engine companies and truck companies and they go refill at lakes ponds or rivers which is called tanker shuttling

@ryanrequena9890 I never understood how hydrants aren't a requirement of building regulations, just about everywhere has hydrants in England and if more water is required you call for a HVP or two, my county with 39 stations has three water carriers

In Germany, we have the advantage of having a hydrant network in every town and village. Shuttle traffic by tankers is usually only carried out out out of town and only when there are no natural water withdrawal points.

@@chazman4461 Here in Germany we have the opportunity to apply to the water service provider for a pressure increase in the hydrant network, so that the water supply is secure in the event of a fire.

So many possible questions!!! How far did they have to drive to the new water source? How many drop tanks did they use? I counted at least 7 tankers early in the video, with probably at least 2000 gallons (then I saw even more later)…..how many trips did they all take? What was the estimated number of gallons used to put it out? GREAT JOB BY ALL!!!

Because it was a half day incident, with a depleted borough water supply…. It’s really not that hard, even on a simple barn fire it could be done.

13:20 tanker 30 with the jake break... i filmed that one... 20:10 and new Danville's tanker, which in my opinion isn't a tanker because it only carries 2100 Gallons...

2100 is a pretty standard size tank for a lot of companies. Even 2000 is pretty normal especially around my part of the state which isn't that far north of this incident

Not every place is a big city, with “unlimited” amounts of water. If you really want to know, they basically depleted the water tower for the ENTIRE borough, and the borough said no more. You either truck water in for the fire, or truck water in to refill the tower, because the system to fill it isn’t designed to fill as fast as it goes out in this specific scenario. You can use “dirty” water from streams and ponds to fight the fire, and keep the clean water in the tower. Make sense? Good.

Because the borough told command that they couldn’t use anymore town water since they depleted the water towers to far down.

@@marksellinger3736 Even cities have water towers because it's costly to have pumps/water treatment plants with enough output to supply water at peak demand so they have the water tower as a buffer.

when I was a kid growing up in Queen Annes County, Md. (Church Hill) their tanker was a tractor trailer, why don't they use them anymore?

Easier to navigate roads with a traditional style tanker. I would assume a tractor trailer would require a cdl and possibly air brake endorsement. I could be wrong though, not sure how it works with those when it comes to emergency vehicles.

Yes, but they depleted the tower….. called taking faster than receiving. Big fire means big water, and the system could not keep up.

@TheRealJesseStoltzfus That's what they were called when I first started, in 1989! Nowadays, "tankers" drop water directly on the fire from the sky. Of course, we may never succeed in standardizing our terminology...
