I love the Panzer III so much in concept: utterly German. It only needed to work great for six months at most before the campaigning season was supposed to end. Hence, it runs amazingly for six months, but then needs at least a season to refit afterwards. Shame the Soviet Union and British didn't notice those memos and insisted on fighting beyond the traditional campaign season. Most unsporting!

My fav early Cold War tank is the Centurion. The Cold War Tanks are cool - but WW2 will always be my fav - partly because my Dad fought in the ETO of WW2 in the 28th ID at “fun” places like Battle of Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge. At least he got to do a victory march in Paris before those ugly battles. However - it was because of the Cold War - I became interested in tanks. I got a free trip to West German thanks to Uncle Sam and my Dad being in the USAF ( he went into the USAF in 47 ) - we were there 1963 - 1966 - and I saw tons of M48s and M60s - not just on base but all over the place - on the small roads in towns, on the autobahn - there was always lots of alerts happening and training.

Agreed regarding Cold War vs. WWII AFVs; the rapid innovation in the period makes them, to me, more interesting, with the Cold War beginning with fundamentally WWII-era kit (T-54, Centurion, M46) and finishing with the M1, Chally and T-80. Sometimes, as in the T-64 series or the M1, that innovation gets enacapsulated in a single family of AFVs. (And by the way, although I realise it's likely impossible, the T-64B is at the top of my Inside the Hatch wishlist!)

The reason the Panther didn't do a victory round or as many laps around the arena was due to carb problems. They only ran on 3 of the 4 carburators as they couldn't get the 4th one fixed in time. Same reason as why they kept the ammount of run time to a minimum during Militracks.
@Activated_Complex5 жыл бұрын
I was hoping to see the Cross of Lorraine somewhere on that Panther captured by the Resistance. But I guess maybe if you’re already in a captured German tank, you don’t want anything that could remotely be mistaken, by a gunner awkwardly looking through a Firefly’s optics, for German markings.

So, why didn't 17 pounder end up on M4's with T20's descended turret? 76mm was fixing a lot of trouble, but Firefly was still superior AT tool, wasn't it?
@TheChieftainsHatch5 жыл бұрын
For British purposes, apparently it didn't fit. Given that the 75mm didn't fit in it either, I can only assume that by happenstance the balance point on 17pr was such that it would work on the 75mm trunnion and not the 76mm. For American purposes, the gun came with way too many liabilities compared to what the 76mm was offering.

I guess The Tank Museum have a very thin line to tread. While I'm sure they'd love to put on far more accurate reinactments, and have vehicles running around at full speed, owners an museums are lending their vehicles that have had incredibly expensive restorations and/or are worth very large amounts of money with an expectation they are returned exactly as they arrive. Even the museum's own vehicles can be very delicate even after huge efforts for Tank Fest. I will take seeing vehicles running, even if it's very slowly, over a sorry-looking shell that has no hope of ever moving again. That said, any amount of preservation is better than scrapping
@lilPOPjim5 жыл бұрын
What I wish tank fest had were more obstacle and destruction! Have the recovery vehicles do their thing. Have a massive pit of mud for a vehicle to get stuck, things to run over to see the suspension articulate. I mean, it's cool to see vehicles drive around but at the end of the day it's all it is. Theres needs to be a lot more going on rather than just tanks driving around

**Accurate battle reenactment! Naturally, two T-34-85's would NEVER have engaged a Panther from behind OR from the sides, at very, VERY close range! It was just plain unfair and unsportsmanlike to do so! Chivalry was very much alive in WW2, so the T-34's did the right thing, and slowly drove all the way back around the Panther and allowed it to take the first shot! It was TWO against ONE after all!**

Why does the United States not have a "Functional" Tank Museum. At one time we had a small version at Fort Knox KY. Currently the vehicles are on Fort Benning, and not available for public viewing. Countless other vehicles and equipment are in storage at Anniston AL, left to slowly rot and decay. The proposed Armor museum to be built at Ft. Benning will not be coming to fruition anytime soon, due to the fiscal fiasco of funding the Infantry Museum. A new museum is to be built on Fort Hood TX, and perhaps with sufficient public influence a true working US tank museum could be created. Its just a shame that a nation with such a rich military history and assets would lag so far behind in presenting, promoting and preserving Armored history.
@TheChieftainsHatch4 жыл бұрын
There are some private museums which are functioning.
@lchris27034 жыл бұрын
Correct, there are some that have a small livery of working vehicles, but none are to the scale of a Bovington, Musée des Blindés, or the Dutch Militracks event. I should have been more clear in my definition of "Functional" , I meant working/driving vehicles. Imagine if the some of the armored vehicles in the Army's Center for Military History vast collection were restored back to working condition. The US could have its own Bovington class tank museum/Tankfest.

Well obviously the shot bounced out of the Stug and into the Panther. The battle was a poor showing this year, the heavily accented radio messages were out of place and there was a whole lot of tanks just sitting and looking at one another. No infantry reenactors either which just seems wrong and added to the slow pace and lack of anything actually occuring.
@Romanov1175 жыл бұрын
Well, if you put a Tank vs Tank battle that is purely only Tanks. Imagine that without Infantry. Although, during the War, Tanks needed Infantry Attachments because the Infantry see better and has a very small profile to sneak around to assist their Tank to kill their target. That usually happened on both sides, German Tanks of all variants heavily relied on their Infantry because their Tanks were very blind than the Allied Shermans. The Infantry only spots the Tank and assist them on the battlefield The Allies on the other hand only report to their Armored Fighting Vehicles of enemy armor moving on a certain areas. When they were only Tanks but no Infantry and anti-Tank teams Attachments were present, they give in the Shermans. When enemy Infantry is present, they bring in both Tanks and Infantry. At the Battle of Arracourt, American Scouts reported of Enemy Armor moving on certain areas. But the Panthers were usually blind due to the lack of situational awareness and traversable periscopes in which the Sherman manage to kill them off at mid-range, they went in without infantry support.
