I have the next Rheem model up. 3 - 40amp breakers to match my tankless oil boiler output. When the spring comes I shut down the boiler and maintenance it and turn on my electric water heater. Very impressed. The truth, I’ve noticed the bill go up about 20 bucks but I don’t use the tankless during the winter.

Ok for future reference to anyone who sees your video. They must know that the unit requires 2 40 amp dual pole breakers because each chamber requires 40 amp at 240v. In order to obtain this you need to connect both black & white wire to your dual pole breaker. Then respectively connect them to the system.

Tankless heaters will last longer if you put cleanout transfer valves for flushing the heater with a vinegar/water mixture to descale the unit. I do this yearly.

I'm glad I found this video. You answered a few questions I've had. First, it looks like you're using pex and that's what I want to do. I know I need to check my current regular water heater power requirements, but I'm hoping I can use the same circuit. I'm pretty confident that I won't need to use much pipe because of the existing pipes. But I need to study it. With only 2 of us in the house I think one of these will take care of our needs.

Have one, Tempra 27, hooked on my well ( living rural community), works great. Love it. My plumber did not recommend it for a whole house system rural, said it would not work . He was WRONG (Iblame it on working old school). Just a comment on your install: it looks great but around here, a pressure safety switch is mandatory on the hot side. Good work. I will be installing the exact same system as yours at a friend's house in a few weeks. Keep posting.

Jeff, Thanks for the review. As a retired master electrician I would urge you to wrap the white wires in red electrical tape. This will signal to anyone who follows you that these are in fact HOT wires when electrified. White represents Neutral wires. Your present wiring without red colors will confuse all but professionals who know how to spot non-professional installs. Safety first, please.

Great info! A couple tips on the electrical. You have to re- identify the white conductors with red or black tape at both the heater and in the panel. Also the ground ( bare) wire is not connected to the neutral. It’s landed on the equipment ground in the panel.

Several years ago I thought about putting a natural gas instant water heater. After researching it further I decided to stay with the old 40 gallon natural gas heater. This what changed my mind. 1. I would have to have a larger gas line from the meter to the house. I would have to upgrade my natural gas meter. Just upgrading the meter would cost $ 625. The cost to upgrade the natural gas line from the meter to the house and to the instant water heat would be several thousands more. 2. I would have to install a water softener. That would cost anywhere from $ 2,000-$3500. Water softeners have to be maintained with chemicals in order to work. Our water in Houston is pretty hard. Scale, lime and other deposits would plug it up over the years.

@@Jeffreviews4u everytime I talk to a plumber that do not recommend electric tankless of any size they always say people complain about it not providing hot water in a shower or tub, how's your experience with this one.

That all depends on the brand you don't have to do all that with a Navien tankless water heater.
@plumber-vc5bu

You don't need a water softener, I install them daily. Unit just needs to be descaled once a year. Also you don't need to "upgrade your meter", just an individual 3/4" gas line to the tankless OR If your gas system is already capable of adding the added btu then you don't need to do anything besides update a small portion of 3/4" gas line that was branching off of to the old water heater.

Bought this exact model for a single wide I reacently bought. I am going to be redoing the entire water system, which is currently galvanized steel and copper, with bits and pieces of other materials here and there. Doing everything in PEX-A due to the material's ability to expand, for piece of mind with frozen lines having a lower chance of bursting.

I’m installing the Rheem 13KW heater. I’ve got low flow showers and I’m willing to restrict folks to one shower at a time. I’m still in the dark about my water connections. There are male 5/8” compression fittings into and out of the heater. They included two 5/8” sleeves and two options: I can use a sleeve and female compression fitting with 5/8” copper but that’s out. I have well water that’s slightly acid and I’m replacing all the copper pipes now. I’m going to use an acid neutralizer but no copper - all plastic. The other water connectors are a male compression to 1/2” male NPT. I can buy flex hoses with 1/2 NPT so I prefer that option. I called Rheem to ask if I could use just the sleeve or do I need to put short pieces of 5/8” copper tube inside the sleeves? They just said to “Ask my plumber.” I’ll just have one 60 Amp breaker with #6 wire. Rheem shows how to wire the breaker but doesn’t even mention opening the unit. There are two sets of small screws. One set didn’t seem to allow anything to open. The other set let me remove the entire front of the unit. Pity they didn’t bother to tell us which to try. It looks nice inside though. Neat! Ok. Back to it.😊

I had this exact unit installled in my familys cabin 5 months ago, it worked great up until about 3 weeks ago. Granted we are on a well, and have hard water, but we literally take this thing apart at least twice a day, clean out the inlet impeller, clean the inlet screen, put it all back together again, it works for a few hours and then stops. It doesnt show any codes, just a trickle of hot water, thats it. Not only that but our cold water only trickles too. I understand that unless there is a huge scale buildup this unit shouldn't affect my cold water, but its happening. We have no leaks, we upgrated everything from copper to Pex, had a 200amp breaker installed, I've dug up my main water line that goes into the house, no leaks, ive had a plumber come out and check it out, nothing. My girlfriend soaked all our airratiors in vinegar overnight, no change. Ive spoken with Rheem tech support 6 times and all they can do is loosely troubleshoot it for you and send you a manual on how to fix it, my unit was 2 DAYS out of date so nothing was covered, can't return it. The only positive thing is that i live on a lake and can take baths in it. Any input would be an enormous help. Thanks

Has the unit been descaled? Depending on the level of hardness in your water this should be done throughout the year.

@@Jeffreviews4u thanks for the reply. I am descaling the unit now. Within 60 seconds there was already noticeable sentiment. I initially bought a 1/3 pump that seemed to be too much as it was spraying out of my inlet hose. Went back to town and bought a 1/6 that seems to be working. Im thinking let it cycle for 2 hours?? Then afterwards should I cycle clean water through the unit?

I had this unit installed on the outside my house and it has lasted for about 20 months. It has stopped heating constantly since the last descaling. I have been given a lot of advice about what I should do and it is all expensive. Considering the price of everything, I think I am going to just change it for the same one. With this video, I think I can do it myself. So, wish me luck and thank you.

Thought about going electric tankless (no gas service here) but decided to go with a rheem hybrid water heater instead just over a year ago (heat pump + electric tank water heater). Far easier run on a home solar+battery system or a generator than electric tankless and has almost the same operating cost as gas tankless water heater. (Massive down side is that it cost more upfront and you'd need a condensate line running to a drain or outdoor just like with an ac.)

You mentioned another brand with plastic inlet and outlet are you referring to the A.O. Smith model? I’m probably one of the few that have both the Rheem 18 kW and A.O. Smith 18 kW. I’m currently using the AOS which according to them lasts longer due to the way the heating elements draw electricity. I like the Rheem because you can turn it on and off and like you said the display will change when it’s in use.

I was disappointed to see how you ran the electric. You would never simply jam the plastic conduit into a sharp metal hole. At the very least, you would put a 1/2" or 3/4" romex connector there. I was only looking for a how to video to see if the installer was using liquid tight flexible wiring/ conduit, connectors. I only mention this because people shouldn't think its ok to simply put the conductor through the unprotected metal hole.

I understand that installation is very expense - assuming a $1,400 tankless heater unit, the total cost with other parts and labor is approximately $4,000 total - but could be higher. This compares with an equivalent 80 gallon hot water heater about $1,500 total cost.

As a DIY, one should mention that the unit requires 8AWG electrical wire. It would have been interesting to see what conduits were used to run the electrical wires from the outside service panel to the inside unit.

@8:49 you mention the E5 code. I think the E5 is actually an error that is letting you know that the water temperature that you have set is not being reached. Typically, due to excessive flow rate. Meaning, due to high water pressure (high flow rate) the water is not staying in the element long enough to reach the desired temperature. So the fix would be to install the proper flow regulator and/or lowering the desired temp.

Water temp may be set to high for the amount of water flowing thru the unit. We set ours to 130. When we maxed it out to 140, the water flow is to low for that and the unit would shut down because of over heating. Try setting yours to a lower temp.
