Buying speakers is easy as you can differentiate between the sound that you hear. But what about the woofers? You cannot hear them, but can only FEEL them?

Important factor that you have to consider while buying woofer is the area of the room. If you are placing it in a small bedroom or media room, then smaller size woofer can do a job great. But if its an open area with large space like a living room, then look no further beyond a large woofer as it has to move that much of air to deliver more bass.
Active woofers have in-built amplifier which produces the bass and it is connected to the AV Receiver using an audio cable for taking input signals.
Sealed Woofer - These woofers are generally identified when you fail to see any air vent or hole in the woofer. These woofers have quick response as they are not dependent on the air movement. These are also supposedly tighter and more accurate in performance.
Ported Woofer - These are type two in the woofers, and are meant for generating powerful bass as they have air vents of bass ports which helps in reinforcing the low bass output. These woofers are typically larger in size compared to the sealed ones due to these air holes and often recommended by us to people who love high bass and want that shake or vibration feeling while enjoying their movies or music.
Placement of the woofer is very tricky and you should consider your area, viewing position and based on all this, the appropriate location can be finalized. Also, having multiple woofers helps in the experience as you can cover larger seating areas with them.

Hi Mehta... I have sony htrt3 true 5.1 surround. Cinematic experience is damn good. But for music the bass is not deep. I want to add a low pass active subwoofer, how do i connect new subwoofer? Now extra port is available

Size of the woofer driver and ported/sealed matters more than the box size.

Actually, dual 10 inchers in very well engineered enclosure will easily outperform a giant single 18 inch woofer. 133db 30hz - 100hz. Same dB spl. 10000+ sq ft easily covered. Check Bose F1 subwoofer for example. I can shake an entire apartment with just tiny 5.5 inch woofers. It's nothing about size. It's all about frequency response, type of enclosure, mainly horn loaded, short horn, tapped horn enclosures are best.

You can get these products (don't look at RMS at all, always check sensitivity, dB SPL & amperage!) 1. Bose F1 system with Bose rms218 powered by Crown Itech 4x3500hd amp 2. Bose MB24 WR SUBWOOFER 3. Sony shake 100d, 99, x70D 4. LG CK99, cm9960, cm9950, cm9940 etc 5. Bose L1 Pro32 with 2xSub2 Don't go for sealed ones. They can't perform at all. Always go for tapped horn, horn loaded, bandpass, etc
