Fighting the Sunday blues with a new Stereo review X video, thanks Kelvin, good honest review! I also think that there must be some bargains among those late 90s speakers... they're not really vintage and cult yet, people just want to get rid of them. Unfortunately, most of them don't look as good as the old Kef or B&W or Celestion - personal opinion, no offence. In Berlin I find loads of Canton speakers, but I didn't like the sound of the few ones I listened to... British stuff is not cheap here, and hard to come by.

As an owner myself I was relieved to find your review of the R3s accurate. If I found it wasn't, I'm not too sure what I would make of your other reviews. Whew! I also find that there is a kind of a veil over the midband, which in my case I put down to the MDF cabinet. Other speakers like the KEF Q55s hold better value but these are warmer and tonally superior. Call it an old fashioned sound if you want but they are very easy to live with long term. However, I must reiterate your closing point about these being an absolute bargain. Absolutely.

Great to see you back Kelvin. I have AE109s that I originally bought in 1997 and replaced once. From what you describe they may be in the same kind of category as these. Great thump in them and good treble. I think the midrange could be better but great in a 5.1 setup that I switch to when watching movies (using a different amp). Thank you and please keep the reviews going as you are so good at describing sound through words.

I have a pair of Tannoy model 637. They are from the first part of the nineties. Pretty good but a bit too polite. Could use some sprucing up. Closed box towers with a dual concentric mid/tweeter and a bass driver. Good sound stage. Especially doing brass instruments well.

I had the slightly smaller R2 model (only sold them a couple of years ago actually) and I couldn't agree more with your assessment! I was nodding uncannily with every single thing you said. They actually annoyed me, as I adored the look of them, but they were underwhelming and "meh". Inoffensive is a good word. They played music but they just weren't musical. They didn't sing.

Iv'e owned a pair of these R3's for a couple of years and would like to add some of my experience. - bass is more or less what Kevin is describing IF you don't sand fill them or put them on spikes. If you do fill them up with a few kg of sand and put them on spikes the bass and mid-range becomes very good indeed. Some times the bass can become to much of a good thing and half plugging the port with a sock can be beneficial. Also try the bass port filled with plastic straws. - they are slim, much more so than are shown in the video. Sand filling will also help with stability. - cabinet is rock solid ! Knuckle test will lead you to believe they are ten times the price. - they are made with real wood veneer and are really beautiful looking. - my only negative thing about them is the tendency to be sibilant which a bad recording and/or bad electronics can pull out of them. They are not sibilant with a good recording nor if you feed them with high quality electronics. If you sand fill them, put them om spikes and place them as should be, then you have a pair of super nice speakers for a bargain.

After the recent hiatus any new Stereo review X is a treat but this made me sit up and hit rewind - did Kelvin really make a reference to John Martyn/ Solid Air as a test track? Fantastic. If this was the first use of said track hopefully it will not be the last. I spent the rest of the review with Danny Thompson's bass lines and JM vocals swirling around my mind along with K's commentary of how the TR R3's didn't quite do the track justice. Glorious.

Great review once again! I like the subjective sound aspect you give rather than just technical details. Two big drivers close together is obviously going to greate some resonance/disturbance, i.e. when the sound waves cross over they could amplify or cancel out the sound depending where you are in terms of place in the wavelengths. I don't know how the crossovers are designed between those drivers but that's the point...there will be a 'crossover' to resolve. Great tip on deciding going prices on eBay in terms of sold items. I always do this but there needs to be decent number of sales to analyse. You have to identify and take away outliers, i.e. very high or low sold items. Then with the remaining sample within the confidence limit take the median sale item. Basic stats! Btw why don't you set up a donation fund (crowdfund or monthly subs), i.e. people donate to your channel and you use the money to go buy HiFi stuff to review?

Love your videos, have watched them all. As a diy speaker builder myself, from your description of their sound as in 'very accurate' but not 'exciting enough' I can't help but think that these speakers will probably benefit from better quality crossover components, (of identical values) It sounds to me like its a good design but has pretty cheap caps and coils in there like pretty much all commercial speakers unfortunately. Some decent caps (which will really help the top end) and larger gauge air core coils (which will do wonders for the bass and mid range) will probably bring it to life in a big way. Done this myself in my own stuff and the differences are amazing. BTW: I think that is a 2.5 way which is effectively a 2 way but with an extra bottom woofer rolled of earlier. Keep up the good work, Love it.

I much prefer a big speaker, and I love 70’s speakers in particular.
