In todays video I will be showing you a simple tutorial on how to convert a Camcorder into a tapeless camera. So that you can easily upload videos from it to your computer for editing. I personally use a usb stick as a memory device for the clear click, but you can use sd cards as well.

Is there a component video alternative? Because otherwise you aren't able to get an HD video signal. This video might work fine for DV camcorders but it not going to cut it for HDV.

If you use an s-video cable you will get better video quality. It’s kinda like old school hdmi. Only problem with it is you have to run the white and red audio cables with it because s-video doesn’t have audio.

I bought this unit brand new and paid I don't want to tell you how much. It has an old technology you're not familiar with it's called Sony I link which was FireWire period. It's right up above where you put the quarter inch plug in and you can come out of that and hook it directly into the computer that transmits all your sound and all your images directly to a computer and you don't need all of those converters. I set mine up in the studio in front of a green screen. The great thing that you may not know about this camera is that it can be used as a DSLR. It has all of the same features of a DSLR. You can get some really dramatic looking shots. It's just missing the high megapixel quality.

There is a MUCH better way to do this. Buy a monitor that records what it’s displaying to SD card, that takes an LP battery and has RCA inputs (FireWire or HDMI) and takes LP battery. Set it in the hot shoe. Plug it in. You’re all set. You can get these monitors for under $120. If you can’t find one with the RCA chords, you will need adapters from FireWire to HDMI or USB depending on which you get. These little “digital” converters often suck, and make the footage look terrible. you have to delace the footage and even then it still never looks right. These old cameras were made for totally different types of televisions (CRT), and unless you’re watching your footage on one, footage from these old 3 chip cameras never looks the way it was meant to, and thus you’re not really getting that vintage look as it was intended to look. However I have found the best way to get it, is simply to screen record it using these cheap camera monitors that can record what’s being displayed. Or to simply use an older MacBook and import the footage like it used to be done.

Yes to all 3 questions. But I have a video I will link in a separate comment on how I clean up my wiring and how to set it up the easiest way. And yes, you can record playback. From camcorders, to VHS 📼 movies on a VHS player. It just captures the output of whatever you have it connected to.

There are DV input recorders who write DV files to a flashmemory and you simply connect them via the Firewire output of the Camcoder and the firewire input of the recorder. I think sony made these a while ago and i think they also worked with HDV camcorders. With such DV recorder you could get the exact same quality of the camera without compromises like with this method here. Because nothing needed to be converted to an Analog signal-path and being digitized again to a lossy MPEG4 format.

It should be noted that these firewire recorders, while they are digital end-to-end, are using the basic DV codec, which is quite lossy and only uses 4:1:1 chroma subsampling. H.264 based MP4 is actually a much more efficient codec than DV, and can offer much higher image quality at the same bit-rate, depending on the specific encoder used. The big quality bottleneck here is the use of a composite video signal into the MP4 recorder. The luminance portion of composite video is low pass filtered to prevent crosstalk with the chroma signal, resulting in reduced signal bandwidth and image quality. A better solution would be to use the Svideo connections on both the camera and recorder as this doesn't have any frequency filtering on either the luma or chroma side, and, depending on the camera's internal electronics, could even give you a higher bandwidth signal that what would be possible from a DV recordering (greater chroma subsampling).

I could understand doing this with hi8, vhs-c or betacam camcorders but not DV. DV Cameras are already all digital if CMOS sensors are used if not they are digital once the video gets past the high quality RGB CCDs & their analog to digital conversion. DV cameras process & store digital video in YCbCr (digital component video color space like used in DVD, Bluray, HDMI etc) which is the digital equivalent to the high quality video that needs a set of YPbPr "component" video cables & you're losing all that visual fidelity to record the composite video feed into a digital format in a process that cant recoup what was lost by goin to composite. A better work flow with a broken tape drive would be recording the DV format video from firewire or usb onto a portable device that can interface with DV video camcorders over the chosen connector even if that meant connecting the camcorder to a cheap laptop & having the laptop record a live feed from the camcorder

no, it's not obviously. When you record video to DV tape you get only one analog to digital conversion (from camera sensor to DV stream) and then you can just copy digital video without any degradation to your PC/Mac. When you use it the dumb way (with this ADC convertor) you get two addiotinal DAC/ADC conversions - one digital-analog conversion (by Canon to analog 3.5mm output) and one analog-digital conversion from Canon to digitizer device. So you just destroy all the quality you can easily get from this Canon camera just by using IEEE1394 output (but I'm not sure if you can get live stream from this output because Canon are clowns who can set off digital live video output just because they can).
