We played this with four yesterday, and I won as the Inventors going heavy down the tech track (and beginning it again). I had some good luck in the cards to make it work. In the end, I didn't think I made any risky decisions, any difficult choices, and there wasn't a single laugh or memorable moment at the table all day. A big bust for me. I agree with Jackie about the game except for her description of it as "complex, meaty". It's about a medium-level for me in terms of complexity, and very light in terms of decision-making. It sure is purdy though.

I just started playing Tapestry and I love it. My board game group loves deep games. Tapestry has so many different options, and you can't really run away with the game with just one move or card. The more you play it the more you learn how to play it. The four random rolls for Science at the end of the track (which I did last game just to try it) is really a damp squid compared to other end of track benefits. Maybe if you got the result of each roll.

Not sure if it was mentioned (I might have missed it), but is also important to note than you can always CHOOSE to go into the next era, you don't have to continue playing an era until you can't take any more actions. So if you want to make sure to get the income bonus for being first to switch eras, you can do that.

I feel like they had the wrong players for this to succeed...Jackie and Rusty seem to prefer lighter games. Aaron and Dave seem like they would have been better suited towards this and would have perhaps showcased it better with more strategy behind their moves. Also I feel like the traders could have been better used early game to get resources rather than to simply hope someone conquers that territory. Early game it seems better to get resources and someone who conquers that tile which they would probably avoid anyway as Nikki clearly did. Even if they do conquer chances are you'd get the point die since early game resources are so valuable. I think Lincoln's experience with technology was just a misfire as the winner of the game we played focused on that track. I focused on the technology track and was 3 points behind his score although I also managed to finish finish the explore and military tacks as well.

We try to give people an idea of what the game is going to be like out of the box, including what a playthrough will be like with people who don't know the game. Obviously, the more familiar you are with it (either from playing it or from watching others play or just because you crush these kinds of games) the better you'll do. This makes sense, as I know with our group, who are heavy gamers, we make mistakes in the most basic of games on first time playthrough. It's bound to happen in a game like Tapestry which is simple at face value (2 actions only you may do) but with so many offshoots of those actions. Good video and good first play through! (although I will say skipping your turn that one time was a bit more then a first time play through hahaha)

Rolling just for VP is a bad idea. Even rolling late, should have given them an option because goods extend turns. In general people’s obsession with VP and monuments over income buildings and resources is a recipe for a low scoring game. Don’t have to finish to know that the winner won’t even need 200 points even though most can score almost 100 points in the final era alone, even from a bad starting hand/civ. There are huge bonuses at the end of each track so it is worth it after generating income to focus on one track and rush up it. If anyone does in this game they would destroy.

Also. How is this more tedious than Terraforming Mars? That game has so much tracking going on! Way more than this!
@JackieFox1976
@JackieFox1976 4 жыл бұрын
Just an opinion and personal preference. For me, Terraforming Mars is pretty straightforward as to WHEN you move things. With Tapestry, the four different tracks plus your own player mat, all of which trigger at different times and have nested actions, made this more complicated, at least for me. As we all said, though, it would doubtless get easier if you played it a lot. So it all depends on who you play with and how many different games you want to play. Only so much time and so many games out there. A lot of people will love this game.
@TorIverWilhelmsen
@TorIverWilhelmsen 4 жыл бұрын
I got bored with TM after some 50 plays. You are just grinding through a deck where you are probably going to discard more and more of the cards as you try to find a focus. A focus that is diluted by adding expansions. Sure, it does not have complex triggers, but frankly that makes it a worse engine builder (even compared to Gizmos) - each blue card is its own little action or trigger, each green card just provides icons and is dead otherwise, and then you have the "dance" to try and be the one who advances a track to where it gives a bonus. Winner is often either the one who managed to do Jovian or who focused on grabbing the most milestones. Underwater Cities is more fun to me, but perhaps a bit too complex for the general GameNight stream, too, if this is.

Agreed! I also like many heavy Euros, and thought this game was rather tedious and finicky with a lot of unintuitive little things to remember. Like taking a good when you fill a region, or rolling the dice when you conquer. There's a difference between complex games where the complexity comes from deep choices in an intuitive rule set, and complex games where the complexity comes from having "lots of stuff". Not that there aren't choices to make in Tapestry, but the complexity more felt like it came from the volume of stuff.

Unless you for sure know that this sort of abstract game with euro mechanics just 100% isn’t you thing.....I would really suggest that you play it at least once, hopefully with some experienced players to teach you, because it’s really quite fun. Don’t go out and buy it, but if you get the chance, definitely play it once or twice and see what you think. I feel that the civ theming is there, but it’s definitely abstract and not the typical tech tree that we’re all thinking of when we think of civ games, for sure. Once you get the hang of the upkeep of all the options and understand the iconography (which only takes a play or two to really get a groove) it all flows quite nicely and doesn’t feel tedious at all. I think a lot of that came from the players in this session having only 1 or two plays (did Rusty have many plays before, or was it just Lincoln who had played previously?) between all of them. For a game with such simple options, yet such depth of gameplay, to learn and play a 4 player game, with other relatively newcomers to the game, certainly made it seem much more challenging than it is.

@@Nain1982 yes. From all the forums and FB groups I've read with early replies from gameplay reports, yes. The majority have been positive and not lukewarm. So, yeah, Mr Passive Aggressive.

@@mattlowder sorry hehe! well it's also wrong to believe they are outliers for disliking a game. The game is also over-hyped, it is a SM game. What matters is that they showed a playthrough for people to make an opinion based on that, and not on how they feel.

@@Nain1982 SM games are often overhyped. Did you like this more or Wingspan more? Did either hit your fun button? Cheers!

This game seems tedious and uninspired.

I often feel that way with this particular BGG show/segment and I think it’s mostly due to how ALLLLLLL the rules are explained from the get go...makes it seem tedious listening to 10-20 minutes of rules and explanations before a game is started. That said, we own this game in our family and LOVE it. It’s definitely abstract, with a very loose civ theme, but lots of fun and plenty of replayability and variation.

Toooo much for our group. I mean we can play it but it would only prbly played once as there are more enjoyable games we play in our group i feel...this is just too much... I mean it takes over half an hr to explain the game... Sheeesh. Good luck finding s gaming group for this...maybe once like i said... But then its off to another game.

The idea that when you pass you advance an era and don't need to wait for the other players to pass to be able to play again is new and I would like to see it implemented in other games

Sigh... does a gane have to have something new to be good? Anyway, i still agree. This is a game of moving up tracks, it looks pretty dry to me though id probably be happy to play it if asked.

Tapestry is just like other Stonemaier games, over-hyped and overrated.
