I wish we could all plant by just throwing the seed on top with a spreader, but unfortunately it just doesn't work that well for everyone. So the next step is to figure out how to get the seed touching soil with the most economical means possible, and for me, I think it is using a drill. Best of luck to you!

Good review Mark. Your telling the story right. I like my Saya 5 footer. It's good for food plotters.....likely not for big acres. You told it right. I do think you will wish for those cutting coulters in time.....as you have more mulch to cut through. Early to know. Good luck!

Hey Tom, I hope it does get to the point where I wish I had purchased the SAYA with the coulters, that would mean the no-till process is working VERY well! Keep us updated on the SAYA.

Thanks Mark. Great info. My plots are not that flat yet, and a little on the hard side. Very good soil but it packs tight. Still thinking about buying one. Going to try corn and beans in the main plot with a electric fence.

Love and appreciate your generosity. I’m making changes with confidence thanks to you. Did you consider the Saha-507? I think the price is around $7,000. I think your model runs maybe $4,000. The dealership in Virginia says the DRL-072 is just a seeder. I just ordered Green Covered seed which is a mix for soil building. I’m watching your video again to see if I should buy your model. Thanks

Hey David, I did consider the SAYA model, but after some testing, determined that just a seed drill would work on my sandy soil well enough. If I had normal to heavy soil, I would for sure have spent the extra money to get the SAYA no-till drill. All the best to you.

I have the Saya 505 (5 footer) and I would buy a fiver again. I plant along allot of timberline.....and my tractor protects the drill from hitting any trees and stumps. This August I planted 10 acres with a ten seed mix.....including 100 lbs / acre of rye and clover, brassica, peas, and Delar. Worked flawlessly. I am in sandy soils however....but even planted into never tilled sod....and those plots came in wonderfully. This has been the best food plot tool I have purchased to date.....not saying it's super duty....but it's good enough for food plotters of smaller scale. I did spend two days to align EVERTHING and check every nut and bolt before putting it into service. Alignment of cutting blades and double disk openers was not good as it came.....and the widths were all over the place. They could use a better assembly.....IMO. Take your time with these....and they can serve you well. Another option would be to get an old drill cut down and make it into a 3 point....but then ......I chose this option.
@theback40

You can't go wrong with the SAYA instead of the DRL. The front coulter should give you even better planting performance. Good luck, and let us know how it goes if you buck up for the SAYA.

Have you not had any problems with the pin that holds the disc opener on? I have had to replace 2 & just about all are bent. It’s the pin that is positioned in the slot that slides up and down with spring.

Mark, I have a question. Last weekend I planted my fall plot, and I noticed a few things about my drill. The handle that spins to calibrate how much seed comes out has a lot of slack in it. Does yours? I also noticed the red piece that shows what number its set at moves freely by about 1 number when the handle is tightened with the bolt. Does yours do those two things? The play in the handle makes it very difficult to calibrate and I'm not sure what number it's on. Took me almost 5 hours to plant 2 acres, I had to go over it like 10 times. I finally was so ticked off I opened it to where I think number 4 is to plant Green Covers fall release. I'm beyond aggravated with this stupid drill. I could drop every single seed by hand faster than using this thing.

Hey Randy, ugh, I haven't had either of those issues. Mine has been spot on, and very tight. Contact them to see what is going on, that's all way too frustrating! SOMETHING isn't right there. I think a few other guys have the same drill and I haven't heard any issues with the, either. Good luck!

Mark I just purchased a saya 505 no till, with the calibration you mentioned you did 20 revolutions of the wheel. So the one question is what formula did you do to come up with seed rates. I read one that is drill 100ft and then use the formula to figure it out. So what formula did you use. The formula in the box is different then some found online. Any info would be very helpful thanks Scott

Congratulations! Excited for you and your journey to no-till foodplots. Unfortunately our drills are different sizes, mine is 72" wide, and I think yours is 55" wide, so the math I use won't match. If you can verify the width for me, and also verify the circumference of the roll cage wheel (mine is 46"), then I'll try to update the math for your drill and let you know.

@@theback40 I have to say the book instructions are really vague and frustrating. I noticed to apply more down pressure on my planting disc they said turn wheels well counter clockwise is the correct way lol. It’s definitely trial and error. I have to calibrate it for sure, I’m not sure about the info they put on inside of bins. Mine says for corn 2=76 pounds an acre everything I read says corn is like 9-11 pounds per acre. Like I said earlier I read an article for calibrating at 100 ft line. Doing the way on inside seed box my numbers are way different. Have u calibrated for your soybeans yet. My math says I should have 32.45 grams which would be 50lbs/acre
@theback40
@theback40 2 жыл бұрын
@@triplemoutdoors8878 Agreed. The instructions and box sticker are useless, at least to me, and it is for sure trial and error. My calculations at 50lb/acre would be 24 grams from one seed cup after 20 revolutions of the wheel.

Hey Mark, been looking at no till and I have property in upstate NY. I normally use tiller to get the plot ready for planting but I turn up more rocks than anything else. I’m looking to do less than 15 acres a year and not sure how this machine would do as no till in NY. Know anyone that has the SAYA 505 which is their no till and bit heavier machine than the DRL 072. I’m thinking with the SAYA I should have good results if I don’t till first to keep the rocks under ground lol! Let me know your thoughts! Appreciate all the videos as they are very helpful!
