Why should people take lessons from someone who can't recognize raw, unhindered emotion? Why should they take lessons from a vocal coach critiquing female **rappers** stating how very well the coach herself could be up onstage instead of them? (We know that was so you could boost views and chase clout btw). I used to learn from your videos and what I thought to be, at the time, wise words...but miss ma'am you've got to get that ego and resentment in check...

I think you completely missed what made this performance so beautiful and moving. This was HER story, sung for her daughter, while on the cusp of giving birth to her son. It may not have been technically perfect, but it was one of the most beautiful performances she’s ever given. Every person in the room felt that song to their core, and that’s what makes it great. Because at the end of the day, she moved us. And THAT’S what music is all about.

She was extremely pregnant, and pregnant women often suffer from severe acid reflux, which can kind of torch the vocal cords, and also she was extremely emotional because this was a song she wrote about being abandoned by her father when she was six. I personally think it's one of her best performances ever, because she's sharing an intimate moment with the world. We all know she is a super-powerhouse singer. Let her be human for once.

The break at 5:30ish in this video is due to emotion, not a "mistake." Yes she came back into the song awkwardly, but she was trying to pick up where she left off. It's the job of the accompanist to compensate for that.

Hey Tara. It wasn’t a mistake at 5:04 and she didn’t come in early. She doesn’t finish the line as she’s battling with the emotion of it, but she (and the pianist) then bring it straight back to the start of that line to try again. If anything it highlights her professionalism to get through such a song, live, whilst pregnant and not completely crumble. She’s awesome.

Look up Beth Hart. She is one of the most emotional singers out there and uses a vocal coach. Look up Tell Her You Belong to Me (Beth's father left his family for his secretary), Leave The Light On, Learning to Live, Hiding Underwater, My California, St Teressa, Sister Heroine... Usually what she does in that situation is a sneak attack. She gets softer and softer and then strikes with extreme power. That power could show anger, joy or a feeling of hopelessness etc.

Dear lawd, I was thinking the exact same thing. Kelly can sing, plain and simple. She's got a very powerful soulful voice. This song is so personal to her, and that she/Jason (her pianist) decided to do an acoustic version of it stripped down like this gave it even more emotion and power. Kelly killed it...period. I loved seeing/hearing her vulnerability in this performance. Should be no critiquing of her singing skills at all IMO. I couldn't even finish watching the video after the first critique. Rosannasfriend I agree that the goal of the channel is about technique, but I think one thing she missed, was the reason behind the technique mistake. I would’ve liked her to recognize the reason for me mistakes being maybe because of the emotion, not due to talent.
@Husitka
@Husitka 5 жыл бұрын
@@maddiepenland171: Tara never implied that the mistake happened because Kelly lacked talent. It's only your interpretation of what Tara was saying. She even admitted towards the end that the mistake might have been just Kelly getting overwhelmed by emotions, but if you go back and listen to that part again carefully, it actually does sound like she started too early and the pianist restarted that part so that she could restart it as well, so it very well might have been a combination of a small mistake and emotions. Tbh, I don't understand why so many people got riled up because of this reaction. This is what Tara does. She always analyzes the technique, the pitch etc., but in doing so, she never gets disrespectful towards the artist even when they make a mistake. And she didn't get disrespectful towards Kelly, either. She even talked about how it can be dangerous to expect a good singer to be perfect all the time, how much pressure it creates and how it can actually hurt the singer in the long run. She also talked about how pregnancy affects a singer. It's like all the upset people chose to ignore that part altogether.

It’s quite clear that Tara didn’t know that this song was about Kelly’s personal life. At first she thought Kelly had made a mistake because she didn’t realize that she was starting to tear up, but once it was clear to her that Kelly was emotional, Tara realized it was not a mistake. She did correct herself. Also, Tara is a vocal coach. If she hears a flat note, let there be no doubt in mind, she will be pointing it out!

Hey Tara, you are my favorite KZfaq channel for vocal breakdowns of artists. This one however was off for me. And I definitely don’t think it’s your fault. This particular version of this song kelly admitted that even in rehearsal she couldn’t get very far due to emotion. This performance I don’t think warranted a vocal breakdown similar to other songs. What I mean by this is that due to the nature of this version, I think it would be better to listen to the performance and absorb it and then come back and talk about her stylistic choices and then the nitty gritty technical aspects. That way you could better relate what happened in her performance with her actual choices and what was a result of emotional singing. This performance makes me tear up every time but because you kept pausing it and talking about things, and then talking OVER one very emotional part of the song, it did ruin it for me. I did seem like you backtracked because you saw Keith urban balling, but honestly, everyone balled, if not they were silent because the version was so powerful. I think that moving forward maybe go back and re edit your stuff because maybe by the end you realized your reaction should’ve been done differently. Or have someone screen performances and let you know the gist because I don’t think this was fair to you because I think you are going to see way more mixed feedback or even negative feedback because 1, kelly Clarkson is massively well liked, and 2, people will always defend the intense and genuine emotion she felt. I don’t know much about vocal technique and pitch, but I did know that vocally that wasn’t her best performance, but it was so impactful I didn’t even bat and eye at it. So I think you doing a reaction to this particular performance probably should’ve been different since this performance is so difference from the usual vocal powerhouse performances we are used to seeing on your channel. Keep up the videos tho! I love learning about everything you teach and breakdown for us.

I didn't know much of her background story before this video, but by the first time I listened to her singing this I was all in, balling and feeling her pain. Her statement after THIS very emotional performance and the broken relationship with her father: "I don't even think I understood the gravity of [my relationship with my father] until I was pregnant [with River Rose]," she went on. "I was like, 'I cannot imagine not seeing this kid to his or her full potential and just seeing what she's going to do, what she's going to be like.'" - And - "I'm 33 years old, I'm a grown woman," she said. "But it's more of that thing where you can try your hardest to salvage relationships - and I did - but at the end of the day, if you keep getting hurt by someone because they just don't know how to properly love people, it's just not worth it. It's not worth the strain in your heart and it starts to bleed into your other relationships and it becomes super dysfunctional.”

Kelly Clarkson is without a doubt one of the most talented and safest pop vocalists of our time and to not consider her being super pregnant and emotional because it's HER song and HER story is pretty weird to watch. Of course she'd hit those notes now, even live! Also she took a lot of time off before that performance to take care of her family and to raise her kids so she didn't perform frequently and probably hasn't had a lot of vocal training. You can clearly hear her voice improving and losing raspiness in the songs and performances that followed after this so her being not pregnant got her voice a lot of power back. A little more compassion would have helped to make this reaction more bearable, it clearly isn't a performance to show off how great of a vocalist she is but mainly shows what an amazing, emotional and strong woman she is.
@emolyemu89

The raspiness came from her pregnancy. It actually had her hospital bound because she couldn't stop constantly vomiting. Both her pregnancies were extremely hard. Her vocal folds took some heat during that time.

Why would anyone critique this specific performance of Kelly's? There are some things you just leave alone and this is one of them. Clearly, Tara doesn't know anything about Kelly's history with her father or the significance of this original song. It amazing Kelly show up nine-months pregnant but it was the FINAL AL show (so we thought). Kelly could have missed every single note and no one person would have held it against her. She's true, genuine and REAL and that's why everyone LOVES her - not a single thing that's fake and she rules vocally leaving everyone in a puddle of tears.

Kelly Clarkson is singing from pure emotion about her own biological father who abandoned her and she is nine months pregnant at this time as well. Everything you said was right however I didn’t hear you compliment the on the emotion she was conveying and at times that is more important than pitch, diction or throat openness in “a moment”. As singers it’s our job to tell a story and make people feel. We convey our emotions through song and verse. In that she was amazing.

Honestly Tara, to me, that is what music is supposed to be! NOT perfection but an emotional response in ourselves and others. Back in my band days. I got much more satisfaction from playing guitar and singing and making the girls cry than I ever did getting out from behind the drum kit, hopping off stage to guys saying " YOU ROCK DUDE!" Touching hearts instead of tapping into primal instincts. Soul, heart & feeling over perfection anytime. It's the difference between Led Zeppelin and Dream Theatre! THIS song made my 7 year old little girl cry! Rush can't do that! Heart touched. Mission accomplished!!

So Kelly wrote this song about how her dad abandoned her at a young age, about her daughter, and about how her husband is stepping up to be a better dad to their children unlike Kelly's deadbeat dad. And then on top of all that she was pregnant with Remington here (her 2nd child) so she was going through crazy hormonal swings. That's why there's a lot of inconsistencies or flaws in this performance, it's a very personal song for her. Kelly was on the verge of tears. And I feel like Tara didn't acknowledge or address these things enough. She focused too much on all the technical elements of delivering a good vocal performance that she missed the whole message of the song.

There have been times when I have decided to not sing a particular song because of the difficulty to control my emotions, and how that would affect my ability to sing the song. I would love to hear your comments on "singing through the tears". Hi Tara, I really appreciated your critique of this video. I thought the facts you mentioned about having to sing while pregnant and the pressure to have to perform a certain way all the time were really interesting and useful information!Everyone else in the comments, I'm sure that Tara could see the emotion that was being presented throughout the performance and even acknowledged it towards the end of the video, but don't be upset that she critiqued things that were due to Kelly's emotions. She's not saying that she is a lackluster performer or anything like that, but these are critique videos, where she will critique the technical aspects of singing because that's the point of these videos.One more thing: Tara doesn't look into the history of the videos or artists beforehand to minimize the potential for a biased reaction or critique. I'm sure that if she had known she would have reacted differently to the performance and maybe have picked up that this was Kelly's life story through song.
