Translation (Part 1 / 10): She understand that many problems within Nightwish contributed to the situation that the band could no longer work properly together, but she was nevertheless utterly shocked about the way it all ended (the letter). In 2001 after Wishmaster tour everyone in the band felt terrible. International tours were a new thing for Nightwish, and the novelty of that experience caused many problems both on a practical level and with relations between the band members. The members were not talking to one another and this was a frequent problem within the band. Tuomas decided to put and end to Nightwish and Tarja was informed about this decision through a friend when she was studying in Germany. Tuomas however changed his mind and wanted to continue because Nightwish had already reached a significant following. This however meant that the bass player had to be fired cause Tuomas could not work with him anymore. Marco came in as a replacement shortly after.

Translation (Part 2 / 10): Tuomas, Tarja and her husband/manager Marcelo met in Finland to discuss everything that needed to change in the band to make things better. They agreed that tours needed to be more humane as everyone in the band was burning out from playing too many shows. As the singer of the band, these tours were even harder for Tarja. What more she was a classically trained singer and her voice needed constant maintenance and care, but the conditions on tours made this very hard. Nightwish would play 3 shows in a row with only one day of rest in between. The tour bus was a difficult place to sleep and thanks to both this and air conditioning Tarja would often get sick on tours. All of this put a heavy burden on her voice, and Tarja was afraid causing it permanent harm. However she felt that everyone in the band was in the same boat so rather than constantly bitch about these problems, she would simply cope with them. The main point in the 2001 meeting was that the band could focus less on management and business side of things and more on the music. Tuomas hired his good friend as the manager of Nightwish while Tarja chose Marcelo to represent her as she was uncertain the problems they had discussed would be solved with one meeting. From there on these two management teams would take care of the band.

Translation (Part 3 / 10): Things did improve. Tarja felt that the whole band was trying their best, but the communication problems remained. Tarja said she wanted to know about what was discussed within the band before decisions were made, whether it was about tours, gigs, record deals or tv-appearances. Instead she would sometimes get informed about these things last minute. Many of the problems which had existed during the Wishmaster era came back. Despite the issues and the pressure, the band had incredible experiences. They had wonderful shows and fans. Tarja felt personally gratified about the fact that she was getting recognized and accepted as a classical singer in the heavy metal genre which she was first not very familiar with. Century Child album opened the band many doors and they had more freedom in choosing what things they wanted to do.

Translation (Part 4 / 10): After the Century Child tour and before recording Once Tarja was once again uncertain whether she wanted to continue. Her husband supported her during dark moments and told her that "Tarja, you just learned how to sing this band's music." She stayed, and Once became a huge success. The band started receiving offers from all around the world and Tarja felt she needed to constantly turn down offers in order to stop touring schedules from becoming too intense or too drawn out. Because of this the band would accuse her from letting down the fans. Tarja felt that dragging the fans in the middle of all the bands problems was unjustified. If the only reason for touring was to please the fans, then the band could play a show every night with no breaks.

Translation (Part 5 / 10): Tarja and Marcelo became more and more isolated from the band. As a woman, Tarja needed her own dressing room. She would use the room to iron and wash her clothes, open her voice, do her make-up and prepare for the shows. Tarja travelled from gig to another with her husband often by plane instead of a bus to preserve her voice. Tarja suggested that the rest of the band would fly with her (since they could afford to due to the success of Once), but they still chose the tour bus most of the time instead. In fact the band was happy that they could party more in the bus since Tarja did not travel with them anymore. When it was time to do a show, the tour crew had set up the rest of the bands instruments and equipment, but some of Tarja's requests such as a booth for changing outfit during the shows were forgotten nearly every time. Marcelo would take care of many Tarja's errands on tour instead, and he was her support system and friend on the road.

Translation (Part 6 / 10): Touring was tough. Many of the days between the shows which used to be days off became days when the band would do promotion and give interviews. Tarja asked the band to split some of the interviews with her and the rest of the band members agreed to do so. In this way Tarja does feel that the band did care for her. By December 2004, Tarja felt so bad that she could no longer continue. Once was a big album, and it had only made all the problems within the band even bigger than before. To her, the rest of the people in the band were not friends, but bandmates. The communication she had with them outside of tours was to discuss things related to the band. Nightwish did not feel like a family.

As much as this moment in Tarja's career was tough and it hurts to know 'bout it all, I usually come here because, damn, it's undeniable how beautiful Finnish language sounds. Listening to it for half an hour nonstop for me is a delight! I put my headphones on and get lost in how these words are formed in her mouth.

Nightwish is the reason why I'm studying finnish, I never heard this language before until I watch an old finnish nightwish interview back in 2008, when I heard it I had the same reaction as you and it automatically became my new favorite language, it was love at first sight. And now amost 2 decades later I finally managed to find a why to learn it, and I'm happy I can understand some words and sentences already. Suomi on niin kaunis kieli ❤

I do understand Tarja's arguments and why she is upset. It's a shame to see the way it was done. Tarja proved she could carry on without Nightwish, and I'm happy for her.

As much I love Nightwish I can understand how stupid that letter was. I don't think she was a diva in a bad way. I believe touring was a really hard for Tarja, but the boys misunderstood her and it's possible they have argued too. And Tuomas later said the way how they fired Tarja was wrong, so he now understand his mistakes. Marko also apologized Tarja and they're friends again. Nobody's perfect and it's okay to talk about the problems ect. but also I believe some people deserve the second chances. And as a Finnish person myself I'm proud of Nightwish, because they're one of the biggest bands in my country and of course around the world. And I think Nightwish is always awesome with Tarja, Floor and Anette. ❤️ All of them brought so much magic to the music in their own way and Tuomas is a genius songwriter and amazing keyboardist too. ❤️ Tarja made Nightwish unique and iconic with her powerful voice and she was the first metal singer ever who made opera and metal perfect together and she influenced so many heavy metal singers. And with her albums with Nightwish I love her solo albums too. Anette has a poppy voice, I know, but she is not a bad singer either and her voice is so rocky too. Her voice fits for Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum perfectly and of course I like her version of The Siren with Tarja's version. And her current band The Dark Element is also awesome! Floor is the Queen of Versatility. And I can say she is a great mix of Tarja and Anette and I'm glad she is now in Nightwish. I love her works with After Forever and ReVamp too and I wish I was born earlier, because I would love to enjoy the times when After Forever was exist, but I was born in 2000 when their first album and Nightwish's Wishmaster came out and I didn't hear about AF until I heard about Floor for the first time. All of these singers are my heroes. ❤️ They can bring so much emotions and cool vibes to the songs. All bassists Marko, Jukkis and Sami are great, however in my opinion Marko brought so much power to the band, but I'm open for Jukkis and Sami too. And Emppu is such a guitar master! Jukka and Kai are both great drummers and Troy's melodies are wonderful. ❤️ The world of Nightwish is so incredible!

Enpä ollutkaan tätä ennen kuullut! Ihan uskottavalta tuntuu, että Tarja joutui jarrutteleen äänen väsymisen takia ja harjoituksen puutteesta. Ja että siitä tuli sitten ongelmia bändin kanssa. Varmaan siitä seurasi haluttomuus tehdä pienempiä keikkoja, mitä taas bändi sitten piti ahneutena ja fanien laiminlyömisenä.

Kirjeessä oli mainittu negatiivisena että Tarja ei haluaisi keikkailla kuin kaksi viikkoa kerrallaan, ja että Tarja ei halunnut enää asua bussissa kiertueella: selkeästi Tarja on koittanut muuttaa ja muuttanutkin asioita (ja bändi on pitänyt sitä vaan Tarjan huonona asenteena). Eli ei tämä kyllä minusta vaikuta siltä että Tarja vaan halusi oman soolouran takia lopettaa, vaan ihan oikeasti kiertueet oli hänelle ongelma.

To me, when she said she doesn't need Nightwish, it was in response to the way that they were treating her and not communicating very well with her. They were disregarding her needs. As a woman and as a singer, and reading everything she was asking for some kind of villainess thing. So when she made the comment about not needing Nightwish, She was just telling Tuomas to value her, and he turn that around and interpreted her as a " diva" to the public.

precisely..one could clearly tell how insecure and uncertain she looked during press interviews...which on many occasions were conducted in restrooms with little privacy and sensitivity for the leading lady...constant drinking, smoking and carousing by the band wreaked havoc with Tarja's vocal chords....

Finally I found a recording for the whole press conference. It only took nearly 20 years... Tarja was really classy for the whole conference. If anything, it sounds like the band never understood that the singer *is* an instrument. The rest of the band probably understands very well that they need to take care of their instruments but if they think that the instrument that the singer uses is the *microphone,* they have totally misunderstood the situation. The microphone is more like the pedal for the guitarist; if only that works, your performance will be pretty bad. And if the band cannot talk about issues like this, it's no wonder that each party is getting more and more separated as the time passes by.

@@vernerisarjomaa9302 I think you misunderstood my point. I was talking about how singer is the instrument and singers need special treatment or their singing voice will not be optimal. It appeared to me that the band failed to support Tarja to keep his voice in optimal condition during the touring.

@Mapz Hmar Zate I think he's changed his mind. He and Tuomas admit what they did was wrong now. Tarja is reconciled with Marco now and she said in an interview she's in touch with Tuomas.

the problem was that Tarja could have put her own solo career ahead of the band. Marco and others ’own projects were always arranged so that Nightwish was the number one priority. Tarja and Marcello certainly wouldn’t have thought so.

@@Imagine1965 Tarja announced to the band well in advance about her endeavor, and in this press conference she clearly stated that she wasn't going to leave them in limbo. In fact she expressed how she was wanting to make provisions through discussions with the band. What NW took issue with was that she did not travel with them and, according to Tuomas, was not always available for rehearsals. In my opinion the concerts turned out very good therefore that she "missed" the rehearsals! Tarja did her due diligence in maintaining her vocal integrity and had a much clearer perception/control over her capabilities than Tuomas could know, because "the boys" were into booze and possibly drugs (that being my assumption). I will not make that accusation as an absolute much rather as a question. Then there was the value in monetary means of her voice Tarja was made aware of, but for Tuomas that was too much to handle and deemed her "greedy". Anybody who works in ANY profession for many years, evolves to higher standards of payment. For someone to counter that argument I call a hypocrite. NOBODY will sell their self for cheap knowing they have reached an upward level of professionalism! Tuomas should understand that for the music industry has become a sell-out through various music streaming services like iTunes that leave musicians at the SHORT end of the stick. Tickets for concerts still, correct me if I'm wrong, hover around the $ 36,- dollar mark at least in Canada. All the accusations at that time towards Tarja stem from the band's own insecurity. Marko Hietala the one of them all, is the most humble soul, who came forth and came clean with Tarja, that was admirable and the right thing to do. The rest of the band to my knowledge did not make such effort and that says a lot about one's character.

To humiliate someone in front of the entire world through the press with an open letter is incredibly juvenile and straight up vicious. Tarja didn't kill anyone or even insult somebody's mother - she had some career disagreements with her bandmates. That does not justify such a public flogging. What, was Holopainen jealous that her husband went home with Tarja every night when Tuomas wished he could have or something? I have a hard time believing the other 3 members were ok with that letter. At least a couple of them were probably afraid to object for fear of suffering the same fate. I thought everything Tarja was asking for was more than reasonable considering the success the band had achieved and I thought her being honest about her future intentions along with offering to continue on for a period was very gracious, yet that seemed to be completely misinterpreted by at least one individual drunk on power. Holopainen may be the Beethoven of symphonic metal, but in correlation with this he was just another idiot in a world full of them.

I hope that some Finn can make the entire conference available with English subtitles. The fans of the world would like to hear what Tarja said. Unfortunately the letter that Nightwish wrote is more accessible to the rest of the world than Tarja's words. She wrote a letter too, but it doesn't explain much. I consider the press conference to be the most appropriate response to the fans.

Yes, have a classically trained singer trapped on a bus full of drunk guys smoking and drinking non stop. Just the smoking itself would damage her voice. Did you watch the documentary “End of Innocence”? It shows how much partying went on on that bus.

What an absolute dick move by the bandmates to fire her like this. Both on professional and personal levels. That being said, perhaps this move saved Tarja and Nightwish. They got so much publicity out of it that the careers of both were off to a great start. Without the drama, neither would have been this big, not Nightwish, and not Tarja. I mean they were popular back then, but this drama... people talked about it for several months. So maybe.... after all.... this dick move was the final loving thing Tuomas did for Tarja. He caused her loved one immense pain here, maybe a bit of it was revenge, but even in revenge he saved her solo career.

Eli pienissä puheväleissä, mutta ei silleen varsinaisesti kavereita. Marko ja Tarja ovat ainakin taas kavereita ja hyvissä väleissä nykyään.

Tarjan eron jälkeen NW on ollut paskaa,Olzon oli floppi.. Jansen ei alkuun oikeen kuulostanut hyvältä,mutta nyt sen jo hyväksyy,silti.. NW ei ole se sama NW ilman Tarjaa.
