This portable Shinto shrine laden with sake barrels was carried by 100 volunteers at the climax of the 2011 Cherry Blossom Festival parade in San Francisco's Japantown on April 17. The shrine was first purified in a ceremony, and the divine spirit was invited to enter into it. The shrine travels through the streets of Japantown amid showers of rice, pounding drumbeats and flute music.
