Midnight Resistance (1990) was a rather lackluster attempt at making a Contra-esque game, ported later to Sega Genesis. Still, it manages to preserve some of the genre's core values, and therefore is well suited for a TAS.

Story: an evil enemy kidnaps the hero's family. The hero is pleased, as this gives him a reason to wear a tight sleeveless shirt and blow up stuff with big guns.

I remember playing this on an arcade at the video rental store while my dad was deciding what to rent. Must have been around 1990 as Strider was the other game they had. Both games came out in ‘89

It may move a little slow and play a little clunky, but this game _really_ took the _Contra_ formula up to a whole new level. In short: _Midnight Resistance_ is awesome. And this TAS is just as awesome as the game. Nicely played, adelikat!

I can't believe that I've never seen or heard of this game, my friends and I were Contra freaks back in the day. Sweet ass music and some fun looking game play.

This would've been a good port if it weren't for the lack of 2 player and EXTREMELY BAD color choices. The first and second stages are literally on a universal 16-color palette (only 16 colors onscreen. Think of it like the Atari ST in terms of color capabilities here), but imo, the lack of multiplayer hurts it more. At least there's no slowdown unlike the arcade version and the music is better, but still...

It uses the same sfx (in the arcade at least) and key system, so yeah Fittingly, both games were by Data East
