TAS originally published on 2021-01-29
The Lost Levels is a remake of the game released in Japan as Super Mario Bros 2 ( tasvideos.org/1882M ). It introduces a number of new obstacles into the standard Super Mario Bros. formula, including poisonous mushrooms, wind, reverse warp zones, and of course many tricky jumps. It's difficult enough that Nintendo of America decided to completely re-theme a different game and release that as Super Mario Bros. 2 ( tasvideos.org/1724M ) instead; The Lost Levels is the first time the Japanese sequel was released to the rest of the world.
This TAS uses Mario's brother Luigi. He jumps higher than Mario, but acts slower in many ways. However, the movie is in no way worse than the Mario version ( tasvideos.org/3456M ) - some new creative solutions have been found.

It doesn't seem like he's joking since this is a video with not a lot of views so it gets less likes (joke/meme comments usually have a lot of likes). One more thing, whether how bad a joke is is subjective

The firebar moves by big jumps every 8 frames or so, and that jump is big enough to let Luigi be in front of it on 1 frame and behind it on the next with good positioning.

There’s a limit to how many things can be spawned at any given time, to prevent lag. If it would go over the limit, it doesn’t spawn.

Wall jumps, they're possible to do even in real time and have saved myself occasionally. Basically, you hit a wall hard enough to go inside it and then jump off from the "ground" that is the wall. tasvideos.org/GameResources/NES/SuperMarioBros.html#Walljump

It's a glitch. I assume that those blocks are programmed to be breakable but you're never meant to break them.

In this game, the game only checks for level completion every 21 frames, so you won't actually lose time as long as you end the level before the check happens. In 1-1's case, I missed the previous check by 2 frames, so I have 19 frames to entertain with.

So many different flag pole glitches... does anyone know what these tricks with the fire flower are, or is it just shooting for fun? Examples for what I mean: the shot at the start of 3-4 at 7:02 or the many shots at 7:18

He use TAS which is a program that you can tell what your character should be doing exactly by frame and pixel. TAS takes alot of time to do when you must re-record over and over again except for that it is mostly using cheat tool to make the speedrun look super fun or show the best possible route or even finding new strategy.

His jumping power is higher, he falls slightly slower, but he has a hard time stopping or turning around. He’s much more momentum oriented.

Although it doesn't look like it, Luigi is actually ducking, it's just that the game doesn't have a texture for a ducking and swimming Luigi.

Large firebar movement is not very smooth, you can completely bypass them with precise movement since the collision detection is not very good
