Matthew Melton here and today I am going to be going over how to record a basic guitar track on the Tascam 388! I also have a bit of an update here about the new 3rd Dream Machine album and some other stuff. This is me recording a guitar track on a song for my new solo album including how to arm a track for recording and overall just the basics of recording a single track on the Tascam 388 tape machine. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to help out!

That was an AWESOME machine! I used to dream about having one of those in the 80s. The most I could afford was a Fostex 160 cassette multitracker. I'm a Cakewalk user for 10 years now but I'll always have the greatest respect for that vintage of gear.

Awesome video guys! Timely...I've just been doing some final cleaning of the pots and faders in my old Tascam 424. Been recording digital for years, but it's been great getting back to tape. Such warm charm that you just don't get, even with some of the best plugins. There's a natural compression, and distortion to it that is very hard to duplicate without the real thing. Still want one of these beauties again though...Fantastic machine! Thanks again for posting.👍👍👍

With albums appearing in the big box stores here in the United States it's clear analog is making a comeback. I like my old Roland VS-1824CD digital recorder far better than my old analog tape recorder. It's still got enough knobs for hands on but the digital patch bay, on board effects and track editing are things I would never want to live without again. Still nice to see these old antiques being used in today's throw away society.

Last album was great, could see how it was a refinement of the jammier first, judging by this new track (stripped down), I think it sounds very of this moment and its own thing, psych roots, but less taken as retro, more timeless.. Im certain its a progression .. Some things need to take more time - thats a fact.

Hey Matthew. Love the 388 videos. I have an old 244 I use a lot for particular tape stuff in my studio up here in seattle, but still usually end up mixing and recording in the box. I just got my hands on a 388, so your videos have been useful. When you say youre bouncing to that other tape machine, can you elaborate on that? Wondering if you take your tape on the 388 and bounce that right to your DAW and then mix in the box there and then summing to that other machine and back into your DAW or what..

Thanks so much for this vid Matthew. Super cool stuff. I've had 'The Illusion' on repeat for the past few weeks and it's an incredible album. I'm working on recording an album myself right now on the cassette-based cousin of this machine the, Tascam 488. I could be wrong but it looks like you were recording directly into the preamps on your 388. Is that right or were you using any other preamps or compressors? How do you normally do it? Also our of curiosity do you normally use the dbx function on this machine? Looking forward to the third Dream Machine album!

Hi! Greetings from Salamanca Spain, I'm the proud owner of a TASCAM 388, I want to start recording with it, I'm in the process of building my home studio, for matters of space and specially to avoid unpleasant situations with my neighbors, one of the things I'm lacking is the acoustic drums, I have an electric one an Alesis DM6 which I plug to mi iMac and I use EZ toon and/or Perfect Drums in Logic, it sounds pretty decent. I would like to know what to put in my rack to record the rest of the instruments analogically, Mic preamps, compressors? what do you have in your rack?, do you connect the microphone of to any particular Preamp or you just go directly from the Mic to the Tascam, do you ever use DI boxes? what Microphone preamps do you use? My instruments which I would like to record analogically are guitars, bass, keyboards, my wonderful Fender Rhodes and my Yamaha YC 45D. The only thing that will go to the tascam for the moment Electronically are drums. what is your audio interphase that you use to pass the sound of the tascam to Logic? than you very much in advanced

Hello! Stumbled across your vids just by looking up as much as I can about the 388 I have been really obsessed with them. Have you seen the new tascam model 24 mixers? I'm curious if you feel this might be comparable to the 388 vibe and workflow wise? The only thing holding me back from pulling the trigger on the 388 is the insane prices these days they go for like 2k usually even non functioning. Any advice here?

Hey, just wondering - how come you record so the needles are pushing into the redzone? Does this cause unwanted distortion or do you think this is the better way to go? I use a tascam 388 and I love it but I often wonder if I'm making the best use of it with my amatuer skills! Thanks.
@dreammachine432
@dreammachine432 4 жыл бұрын
I like to push into the red on this machine for stylistic purposes, not to the point of peaking, but the Tascam 388 is pretty forgiving and can add some nice texture and grit when you push the input. This is especially true on snare and bass! But you can go overboard, just depends on the sound you're going for.

Hi Matthew, have you any idea why when I try and record drums with a click (which can assigned to any track on the tascam) it’s bleeding in to all the channels? I’m sending my click from logic to the saffire which is going in to the tascam. It can be faint on the other channels but it’s still there. What is your technique for setting up a click track wit your live recordings ? Thanks in advance
@dreammachine432
@dreammachine432 Жыл бұрын
The best way I've ever found is to use one track to record a metronome and count in. A second track for a scratch track, then you have 6 tracks for drums!
@dreammachine432
@dreammachine432 Жыл бұрын
We typically will record this "seed" all in logic and then pan the click to the left and scratch to the right, then you can bounce the stereo mix to, for instance, tracks 1 and 2. Then you can give the drummer more or less of click or scratch to suit their headphone mix. As soon as the drums have been recorded you can discard all of this except for the count in
@maxqueens
@maxqueens Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. This method does work but I want a way to record the click live with the players. Say there’s multiple takes so I can align them simply and not need to record 20+ mins of click, also if they want to change tempo so that I can easily. What do you think? Any suggested? Thanks again.
@vhs.ghost__
@vhs.ghost__ 2 жыл бұрын
Probably a dumb question but how can you record to a click track on one of these? Would I need to use a track to record a metronome then eventually just record over it?
@dreammachine432
@dreammachine432 2 жыл бұрын
Not a dumb question whatsoever! That's what we always do just use a track to record the metronome and a count in. Then you can take a second track to record a scratch track for a drummer to follow along to
