The Tascam DR100 Mark III has a new, very quiet Pre-amps. To me, that's what I bought it for as I'm tired of dealing with filtering audio in Post. Nothing like CLEAN AUDIO!

I'm a voice actor and content producer that works from home and I've been using this thing for 2 years. This thing is absolutely awesome, and its delivered high quality, easy sound without fail until a recent broken MicroSD card snafu broke my card reader. Bought another one to replace it immediately and I'm now rewatching the video that originally convinced me to buy it in the first place ;D

Brilliant review. Thanks for putting in the work to make it. I just wish the DR100MK3 had a wireless remote option for controlling it from a distance without wires when recording elusive wildlife. Also fixing points to attach a strap would be great to hang it off the ground.

Hi there- just my two cents worth, but one use for AGC is if you are interviewing someone in a noisy crowd where the background noise is changing constantly. So, journalists or run-and-gun shooters might use it all the time. In some 10 years of recording, that's the one instance where it is useful! (Just remember to turn it off afterward). Thank you for the informative review!

Using Dual DAC produces less noise, this can easily be noticed. I have not tested the effect on the same sound subject though to find out how much it improves. This setting consumes much more power, i would say 50-60% . The big mics are extremely sensitive to wind movemenst. In fact so much: i have covered them in the thinnest plastic to prefend wind comming in, even thru the windjammer..... The plastic works:). The noise floor of these 90 degrees mics (these are not AB mics, look inside the capsules!) is rather high. The noise floor is in facthigher then my Olympus LS11 and very much higher then my Zoom H2n. These last two arre the bestter ones when used with maximum gain, sometimes needed.... But the Tascam start to record as low as 20 herz, so is much more sensiitve:). Hope next year to try out the Sennheisser ME66 on the Tascam....

Dynamic Mics are used in NON-TREATED room because they are much better in rejecting noise. I would say a very significant portion of podcasters and professional announcers use Dynamic mics for that reason. Sensitivity is not an advantage in a less than ideal setting.

It takes any Micro USB cable to type A cable you have lying around your place. No big deal there. And any 2 amp charger will do fine. Most likely one you have lying around your place. Yes the Record Volume control uses an encoder. Also the line level output is fixed, and not variable. I hear you about minimizing your work in post. I love my DR-100 mk.3 as well. I would be curious to compare the DR-100 mk.3 vs. the Sound Devices Mix Pre 3. The DR-100 mk.3 uses Digital Limiters. Unlike Analog Limiters, the distortion is going to occur with the limiters in or not. The Sound Devices Mix Pre 3 uses Analog Limiters so distortion will not occur. I agree with you that the Mic Preamplifiers are excellent. Golden rule, as long as you are recording around the -12db LUFS, you have no issues. Easy stuff. Enjoy.

I have a doubt. You talk about tuning down the input levels so we hear less floor noise. But my question is: Don't we need anyway to reduce the noise through software always even with lower gain? Therefore, shouldn't we set up the input level on the max as long as we don't have very negative climatic / environment conditions in order to pickup the maximum details of the sound on a quiet environment so we later remove the floor/hiss noise after having achieved a higher quality (amplified) mic recording? Actually removing the noise by software you don't lose information, but reducing the gain (input level) you may lose lose information / detail quality, isn't that correct? Thanks a lot in advance

It is great to e able to shut of all led lights. This makes the recorder easy in stealth use at night. For humans or animals cannot see it, and you dim the screen ofcourse. The lion battery lasted for 11 hours and 23 minutes (at eleven degrees Celsius). I had the two AA bateries removed because u found out they exchange electric power somehow. After using up all Lion power i then tested the 2 batteries: they lasted almost 5 houres. Amazing! But i use very good 2400 mah batteries of 27 gram each. Only…using the unit far more often, i mean turning it on and off often, like every 5 minutes, this makes the unit last much shorter. A lucky guess of about 40%, but this is still plenty ofcourse.

Nice review, thank you! I was thinking about getting the Zoom H5, but I really like the three-way battery solution & great pre-amps (supposedly on par with the ones from Sony) among other things. A signal-to-noise ratio of 102dB is really good. Some how I also like the digital input. That way I can transfer my old DATs or record digitally from cable TV w/o the need for a PC. On the down-side, class-compliance seems to be missing? That's a shame, would have been nice to double the unit as a PC/Mac audio interface like the H4n, H5. and H6. Somehow that seems to be missing on all Tascams. So, its a tough choice. Digital effects would have been nice too...

I have never used one before and I would like to know if it is possible to record more than two tracks in a single project on this particular one (recording one track after another, not simultaneously, on the portable unit alone). Can you please check if connecting a USB power bank adds any additional noise to the recordings? I know that USB power banks tend to be very noisy sometimes so it may contaminate the audio signal during the amplification stage. This is one thing I really wanted to make sure doesn't happen because many people online claim that the battery life when XLR is connected is not very good.

Great review! I'm thinking about buying this unit. The number one complaint I read from other reviews is that the battery life is bad, especially with AA batteries. Some say that the battery life was ok at first but later it got worse - and that the recorder can drain full batteries in a matter of minutes. What are your experiences with the battery life? External USB power bank might not always be a practical option in my use. I mainly plan on using one external microphone with 48V phantom power, occasionally two. I use Eneloop Pro batteries.
@ArtVideoProductions
@ArtVideoProductions 7 жыл бұрын
I use Eneloop as well. No, the battery is fine, as long as you know how to properly maintain and charge a lithium battery. (Search online how and tips) I start with the lithium battery first as priority. I can shoot a FULL 7 hour reception with this unit via LINE IN. With phantom Power the battery will deplete faster of bourse, but still VERY acceptable. You can buy a 6600 mAh power bank at 5 Below store for $5, or a high end one from BH. Takes 3 seconds to hook up.

Monique Klinkenberg Thank you so much on your information! I ordered my DR-100MK3 a few weeks ago from a music store, Stage Music (www.stagemusic.lu) where I live in Luxembourg. It’s not a part of their sales inventory but they managed to have it ordered. I am extremely very happy and excited on having it arriving to the music store which I will be informed so I can go to purchase it. I have seen many video reviews and written reviews that I have seen and read. Also what you have explained is just great! Thank you! I have purchased a couple weeks ago the Zoom H5, also an very good quality recorder. To answer your question I have no idea. I am a musician playing classical guitar, clarinet and sometimes piano. Between 2005 and 2006, I bought the Sony MZ-RH1 portable Minidisc player/recorder. I still use it occasionally as it’s doing really well without any problems but I don’t enjoy the remote controller that gets attached in the device. That’s why I really needed a big change on a high quality recorder but for several months or more I really took time on learning slowly from my internet researches and video reviews on these types of digital recorders as the format is much different than the MZ-RH1 but has similarity to it

Hello! I purchased tascam dr100mk3 and samson c02 mic combination. I connected these two with XLR conncetor. I changed setting to Mono-L. Then I tried to record but tascam won't pick up any sound! What have I missed? I am so frustrated!

You have “missed” reading the manual. Turn on Phantom Power on the TASCAM between the XLR inputs and it will magically start sound coming in

@ArtVideoProductions

Gary Curtis simply plug the lav receiver on either XLR channel, then add the external mic on the other channel, The DR100MKIII also has the ability in controlling L and R levels separately.

I just bought this unit Tascam DR100 Mark III and a Sennheiser EW112 PG3. I also own a Rode NTG2. I use it for interviews and comercials. ¿Any tip? this is my first recorder and my first wireless system. Thx
@ArtVideoProductions

If you're interviewing 1 person, leave the lav in the bag and use a boom on a stand instead. Place your NTG2 or any mic as close as possible to the subject off frame, precisely aiming at the mouth. I haven't laved anyone for interviews in years. Using a boom provided me much better results plus there's no Lav showing. IMPORTANT!! Using shotgun mics indoors is not recommended, only outdoors because it picks up sound waves that bounce off the walls into its sides causing undesirable results. Shotgun is designed for outdoors. For indoors, if you are on a budget, use a unidirectional small diagram condenser mic such as the Tascam TM-PC1 or a Samson C02. Great video. Quick question. I've been considering the purchase of either the DR-100mkIII or the SONY PCM-D100. TASCAM has a "Dual level recording" feature that simultaneously records a second audio file 12dB lower than the main recording. The TASCAM manual calls it a "backup." The Sony D100 has a Peak Limiter feature that records a second audio file at 12dB lower than the main recording, but it is not called "a backup." Instead, the D100 seems to automatically insert the -12dB (non-clipped) waveform into the main recording as needed. So it seems that the D100 fixes clipped portions of a recording automatically whereas the TASCAM merely provides a backup file that requires you to use an audio editor to manually copy and paste the portions clipped. Is this correct?
@ArtVideoProductions
@ArtVideoProductions 7 жыл бұрын
The Sony PCM D100 is a hell of a recorder. Tough choice! Answering your question... the Tascam DR100 MK III also has a peak limiter, and its dual level recording literally gives you a duplicate/ separate file -12db adding a "D" at the end of the file name. You dont have to copy and paste anything. If you distorted the original, just use the -12db file in its entirety. The Tascam DR100 MkIII has a high tolerance from distorting audio as long as you use the LIMITER in conjunction to the dual recording. I DO use the dual recording but I never needed it since most of my recordings are done at the right levels. At LINE LEVELS, via the 1/4" inputs where the XLR iis, the tolerance in distortion is incredible. It just won't clip unless you do something really wrong.
@ArtVideoProductions
@ArtVideoProductions 7 жыл бұрын
If you're a boom operator and recording audio for a movie scene, to prevent clipping, make sure you ask the actors to give you the REAL THING (not "test 123 or count to 10...) . At the highest level of their dialogue, then set your threshold there. You'll probably won't need a -12 do backup. I don't.
@JDW-
@JDW- 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your two replies. It would be nice if I recorded in controlled environments, but I record many different situations, indoors and out. I've recorded live performances (plays) indoors in small rooms where the content was unknown to me, and where dialog was fairly low level but suddenly one of the actors would pull out a hammer and smack it on a desk. So it would seem that I would need to use the limiter in my case, and perhaps the backup -12dB file would be useful too. However, if using the entire -12dB file, it would need editing in post to compress large peaks and boost the base sound level. The reason I mentioned the Sony PCM-D100 is because it seems to do the "compression" (substitution of clipped peaks) automatically, no editing in post required, so long as the peaks don't clip even at the -12dB level. Anyway, thank you.

A.A. B. Difference in audio signal quality between a 10 foot regular RCA cable and a 10 foot XLR: SAME. Any cable from 20...25 feet run, the signal loss is zero regardless if it’s RCA, HDMI, XLR. XLR was developed for long cable runs. Stages have XLR cables up to 250’. Can’t do that on RCA for being unbalanced. So if you’re worried about 25’ signal loss on a XLR, people are not with a 250’ run. It’s made for that. You can buy a 100’ XLR for the tascam without a problem if you need to.

Thank you for a very helpful review and instructions. I have this recorder, and as a beginner am wondering if you would recommend mounting it on a video camera such as the JVC GY-HM620 using a good shotgun mike for bird sounds. 2 general questions about that - 1) would the recorder and mic completely bypass the audio part of the camera? 2) is file sync best accomplished using the camera TC marking (as JVC calls it) or the recorder audio tone (which according to the manual is generated at the recorder and recorded into the video file by the camera), or are they the same thing. That is, I need to understand the simplest connections layout between the Tascam/mic and the camera. Or could you point me to a reference which would help? Thanks very much.

Ok, Actually, I never use the built in mics, ONLY XLR inputs with my fancy mics, which gives me a much better audio. The reason I bought this model is only because of its quiet pre amps. Sorry I coudn't help you any further as I simply don't use the built in mics.

I'd use your JVC GY-HM620 XLR plugging in your shotgun mic directly instead of the Tascam since these cameras already have good pre amps. You don't need the Tascam for this. I use a rode NTG4plus directly on camera getting excellent results.

thank you very much for your tutorials which I carefully went through in details from the beginining to the end. However, I didn’t notice if you had ever mentioned “overdubbing” feature in MK3 as I found it had this important feature in MK2. As I play flute and more than often I need to put on my headphone to listen to the cover music from my Music Library while playing flute and do the internal recording at the same time. If the new model MK3 ommitted this feature, I will be extremely disappointed as I have been waiting for such a while before this Hi-Res digital recorder is finally released. Secondly, kindly advise what is the minimum SD card it comes with the machine when you opened the box. Many thanks and waiting for your kind reply.

Dear Sir, thank you again for your prompt reply. I can't find "overdubbing" in the manuals, that's why I need your help to search in your own machine if it has this feature which is extremely important to me. Although you have no obligation to do so, you are the only source that I can get help from because I had no replies at all from distributors in Australia.

sorry to trouble you again. I've got another technical question to ask if you don't mind. If MK3 can't do the overdubbing, I found a socket on top next to the Mics "EXT IN". Can I connect my phone playing cover music connecting a jacket from iphone's end and plug into this "EXT IN" in Tascam. Will this do the voice-over or overdubbing? Thanks

If you don't use a nice expensive windscreen, outdoors, forget it. Even then, it's a problem with those built in mics which I hate (on all Tascam units), UNLESS you plug an XLR mic on it then you're good. AGC: I will never use that feature regardless. Not a big fan of those wild swings in audio volume gain. I'm full manual even at run an guns. Never brought home bad audio.

Hello, thank you very much for your review, which is very helpful. I have just a question. If you want to record someone talking within a big room with the built-in microphones, which is the maximal distance from the speaker that still allows you to get a clear record?
@ArtVideoProductions
@ArtVideoProductions 7 жыл бұрын
If this is a wedding reception speech you're trying to record off the DJ's speaker, if not recommend as it is the worst way to get audio. Plug the Tascam DIRECTLY to DJ's booth output jacks, master out or REC out via LINE IN on your Tascam or any other recorder. Back to answering your original question, the closer the source (in this case the speakers) the better the sound. Don't forget to turn on the PAD function on the Tascam if the audio from the speaker is very loud.
@MrSilgidi
@MrSilgidi 7 жыл бұрын
Hello, thank you very much for your feedback. In this case the record is not specifically meant for a video. I am however aware that the closer from the source the better. It is just my curiosity, to know if a speech can still be recorded within a distance of 10 or 15 meter or not. Obviously I wont expect the best quality in that case. The question is only if a record with the built-in unidirectional michrophones will still be possible in these conditions or not. Thank you very much.
@ArtVideoProductions

No mic or recorder will get you a clean sound at that distance. The sound waves will bounce all over the room walls first before reaching the mic/ recorder.
