At 11:25, it wasn't glitchy . He didn't hit the REC button. Notice that he hit the REC button right after the device responds right away. Good video.

Thanks for your comparison versus the Zoom H1, and this detailed review. They allowed me to decide on the Tascam DR-22WL in preference to the Zoom. The Tascam to my ears is better at recording voice -- it seems to pick up better bass -- while the Zoom seemed to be better with music, presumably because it picks up less bass. My main use is to record lectures for use in videos to be posted on KZfaq. While the Zoom would be perfectly adequate, the Tascam just offers more -- especially control via WiFi, allowing me to sit at the back of the lecture hall checking on my cameras and still control the recorder sitting on the lectern. Perfect!

Just picked this unit up for some field interviews, seems like a great unit. The Wi-Fi seems updated, my android interface looks like the iOS interface in this video and delay isn't much of an issue. Audio is very Good, as is this video review. Thanks...

Just bought one because of your video. Thanks a bunch! I already have the ZOOM H6 that I LOVE. But it is much bigger and bulkier for doing my podcasts on the road, and I want to save the H6 for when I record my videos on my DSLR. So I decided on this guy for a basic hand held. Great video!

This is pretty nice. I have had the zoom h1 for years and years, and the build quality has always bugged me, however it has held up after tons of trashing in my gear bags haha. still is a really handy small recorder for a lav mic or something. But this DR-22WL is a much needed modern update, some of the settings are really life-safer compared to the limited options on my h1, but still a pretty small size compared to my Tascam DR-60D. Great video!

Nice review-- Thanks. But two things about the WiFi feature. First, it eats up your batteries, rapidly. If you are planning to remotely control the DR-22WL from your phone or tablet via wifi, you will have a limited amount of recording time before the batteries in the DR-22WL fail. Mine lasted about an hour an a half-- not enough to complete a recording of our event. Second, if you want to use wifi to transfer files to your phone or tablet so as to upload them to a cloud service, you should be aware that you can upload only to SoundCloud. The Tascam mobile app does not support uploading of files directly to any other service, such as Google Drive, Dropbox, Facebook, etc. You can get a free SoundCloud account, but it comes with only a minimal amount of storage, and you'll have to pay a pretty hefty annual fee to get more space. I bought the DR-22WL because of the WiFi feature, but for me theses issue make it of very limited use. I'll be returning it, in the hope that Zoom will do better.

I too saw this as an issue, but there is a fairly easy workaround. First off if the WiFi fails it does not affect the recording. The device will still continue to operate. To fix this I bought an Anker lipstick USB battery pack. It is really tiny plugs into the microUSB port and has enough juice to run the 22WL for ...days.

Thanks for the best review with test audio. Your review made me to order this right away. Replaced Zoom H1 with TESCAM in my B&H shopping basket..H1 is not bad either..but wifi and other features and sound quality makes it little better. TESCAM app is improved a lot better since your review, as new reviews are showing hardly any delay in sync.

Amigo queria ver se pode me auxiliar e se o seu tem o mesmo defeito. Quando vou gravar e o wifi dele está ligado, se inicia um barulho de interferência ou seja a função de usar wifi para gravação não dá pode ser usada por causa disso... Você testou se o seu acontece isso? OBS: utilizando os microfones do próprio aparelho dá interferência, já mics externos não.

I very much enjoyed your review! I watched several other video reviews and comparison reviews ... I truly just was very well informed by your knowledge. As my Apple iPad Air 2 doesn’t record in stereo because it has only one mic with two speakers so I can hear in stereo music but my recorded video on my guitar playing is recorded in mono. I really loved watching the Tascam’s DR-22WL and DR-44WL video reviews as both models have WiFi. I don’t know if it is possible to use Apple iPad Air 2 (which I have) recording video and syncing either one of those devices for recording the audio. I also watched the video reviews for Zoom’s H5, which doesn’t have the WiFi capacity but still an excellent digital recorder

Feel the temperature of the Mic housings versus the plastic body. If it's metal it will intitially feel cooler than the body.

Thanks for the answer Max, your videos helped me very much with the comparations between different recorders, and if it's possible i have one more question to ask you. I definetly think that the Tascam DR-22WL is an amazing choice, I was going to buy it, but i've seen in Amazon the Tascam DR-40 and the Zoom H4n for only 20/40€ more, Worth it to spend more money for one of those two? I will use it mainly for voice recording in youtube videos with a lavalier mic or over the camera, as camera mic, or even sometimes as a handheld mic for, maybe, interviews or something similar. I think that the XLR inputs could be usefull in a future and the capability of use the H4n as a audio interface is pretty interesting, but i dont want lose the portability In your expert opinion, what do you think? I'm sorry to be so annoying, thanks a lot.

Great review Max. I just bought mine today, playing with it now. The backlight is an immediate concern, maximin 30sec it will stay on, why not have an indefinite time as the display is impossible to read without backlight. But i love it!!!! I am an research doctor and will use it to interview. Can you recommend a carry case? As well as a stand? Cheers Scott

+Ryan Cohen It's 2016 (March) and the Android app is still buggy as hell. Many people complaining about devices freezing, app not responding and a very limited functionality compared to the same app in iOS. The bad thing for me is I hate iOS and I don't use -- and never will -- use an iPhone just for this app to work as it should. I guess that's the bad news. There's been an update at least, but still not working as you'd expect. Cheers, mate :D

Thanks! I'm not going to a concert anytime soon but I have a really nice and loud bose sound system in my car so I'm going to do a test with the system turned all the way up to see how the recorders handle it (very loud)

I am a filmaker and I would like to know how far away can you use the wifi, distance from the DR_22 to the iphone...approx whats the longest distance away from controlling the unit with iphone at the camera to wehere the unit is close by the actors ! This recorder allows you to monitor the levels visually via wifi, but you can't actually monitor the sound through your wifi connected device. This makes it much less useful because you can't know the quality of the sound (if there is rustling or other noise that needs attention) only the levels. Am I wrong about this? Has anyone been able to monitor the actual audio by listening to it live (I would imagine with a slight delay) through the wifi?

Our Tascam DR-05 produces a horrendous 1 sec feedback on pressing Record and also on Stop. Is this a fault or a settings issue?

That's the Auto Tone (a menu setting). It's an electronic slate function for syncing with video. It can turned off or set for various durations and levels.

Hi Max, really great reviews. Thanks for taking the time. Do you know if these can be used as a line-in microphone when connected to a Mac? Would like to create videos with a Macbook Pro, in a single take, using iSight, but recording audio from the Tascam. I think the Zooms will do it, but not sure about the newer Tascams.

Would this microphone work for capturing beatboxing sounds on the go? I would capture a few vocals but I would focus on beatboxing. I'm planning to use it with Ableton Live 9 if that helps.

IT would be great for vocals on the go, but if your using it in studio I'd get a mic specific for vocals and either a recorder that has XLR inputs (like the Tascam DR-44WL amzn.to/29VnAvQ) or if you want to go directly to your computer an XLR input device like this one amzn.to/29ZZTxN

Thank you very much for such a great and detailed review! May I please ask you a question about this? Do you know if it would be possible to use this to record both sides of a phone conversation if you plugged it directly into a smartphone? TEAC does not even have any customer support, unfortunately. I have sent them five separate messages via their online submission form {I even received the auto-generated email verifications of my messages}, and they still completely ignored me.

Hi I can't really say if it will work or not it will really depend on if your phone send the signal of your voice and the person you are talking to. The recorder will record whatever signal is coming in. Maybe you can try it out and plug in earbuds and see if you hear your voice as well because thats what it will be sending out. your best bet may be to set your phone in the speakerphone setting and use the recorder.

+Dj Danny Gee G I would set it to the highest qulity settings (wav 96 44.1hz) and set your audio gain manually. I would set the output gain (if there is one) to 75% and adjust the rest with the DR-22WL

Bought this recorder mostly out of this review and got it last week. However I do get a lot of high frequency noise, both with internal and external mics (worse with the latter), and I also get the feeling that it has some kind of auto gain, eg. when it's quiet it pumps up the amps - which generates noise, yet I do not find any settings for this. It's somewhat easy to filter out in post without losing too much of the quality, but I'd just like to know, is this normal for this unit? I've previously used the H4n on some productions and had similar results, but then I used a lot of gain. On the Tascam I still get a lot of noise, even on lower levels.

Thanks! I haven't transfered it over wifi but yes you are able to. Its very easy you can pull out the SD card or plug in the micro USB cable into your computer

+SonnyC79 Most modern video editing software has automatic video/audio syncing functions, but you can also do it manually. I would do a youtube search on how to synchronize video and audio for your specific video editing program, as its different with each one.

Z1 can be a usb microphone and usb interface. speaker is better than 22wl. The 22wl app is not useful.

You can if your plugged into the unit. Over wifi you can't do live monitoring while recording (yet)

Nice overview. It will be interesting to look at audio samples and how it compares in terms of noise floors for the same recording levels with the H1, both for internal mics and external input. Also, ZOOM recorders tend to have nasty DC offsets issues (waveform is not symmetrical around the 0 axis), maybe the Tascam does better with lower distortion. Which Lav are you using in this video? Sorry I missed if you said in a previous one. I see you have a OnePlus One, did you tried shooting in RAW now that it's available?

Thanks! I will try to do a nice comparison including with what you've stated! I'm using a inexpensive lav mic amzn.to/1t16lvD that seems to be good according to reviews. It is a "clone" of the sennheiser and maybe its the same one built in the same factory just not branded the same. All the reviews state it is just as good as the $150 Sennheiser but who konow. The most I've spend on a lav so far is about $40 but maybe I should spend more. I haven't used the Raw function on the one+ just haven't had any spare time. I've still only flown my DJi Phantom 2 and Gopro4 twice for 5 min each time and not anywhere cool. (no time)

Max Yuryev Oh wow this Lav is a great performer especially at this price point. Did you tried plugging it directly on the GH4? I know this is an external recorder review but I've been positively surprised by the results with the Rode Smartlav+ plugged in the GH4, at -12 dB gain. I asked about the OnePlus RAW because I did the profiling for the DNG output, and if there's always room for improvement it's not too bad as it is ☺ (sometimes you only have your smartphone as camera) And yeah for the time, newborn! Hope your family is doing good.

supercurioTube Thanks! we are doing well :) I have used a lav into the camera but only those times where i'm close to the camera. A lot of the time I'm farther away and it helps to not be connected. So do you work on the Cyanogen mod team?

Had to come back to this video to warn anyone that is considering buying this used. The WiFi app is beyond terrible. It might work after you first connect to start and stop, but if you get out of range (which is short), it's likely to disconnect from the recorder. You also can't live-monitor the audio, except upon playback by activating streaming. It's a shame Tascam couldn't iron out the bugs and update the firmware. They've dropped this unit and hoped we'd all forget about the terrible WiFi implementation.
