Awesome video man! I love how you explain what each setting is rather than just telling us where to set it. I'm picking up a couple of these for a wedding I'm shooting in the near future. Now with this knowledge, I can fine tune it to my own needs, albeit pretty much the same settings as you had anyway lol.

And always remember to update firmware. You can alas monitor audio before with your headphones, iPhone and phone headphones doesn't work properly because of input jack, check your headphones in advance. Always unplug headphones they drain the battery so much. Thanks for the tips!

Hello I just picked up this audio recorder.... Would these settings be good for motovlogging? I run the mic into my helmet and I keep the tascam in my front pocket.

Hello! So I commented on here already with my other channel "Kunkel Videography". But I thought I'd use this one for all things interaction on KZfaq. Anyway, that's besides the point. I am here to ask about audio for weddings. I already have this audio recorder (amazing), and I have two DR40s, one for plugging directly into the sound system and the other I have for nat sound. I am struggling to figure out the best mic to put on my Cam A (C100). I have the Audio-Technica AT875R on my Cam A, and it's.... ok. I am struggling to get the best sound I can for wedding receptions, it's pretty good with voices, and highs/mids sound good but lows are really bad, almost non-existent. So the nat sound I am getting is too bright/tinny and there is a feint hiss. I know i can doctor it in Audition or Fairlight but I can't quite get it to work out. I am trying to find a good upgrade shotgun mic to mount on the c100 to get a more FULL sound, any suggestions?

@@OliverJHughes Hi Oliver, I'm quite impressed. Obviously, the main attraction is the small size - my other Tascam recorder is an old DR100, but that's the size of a brick! Great in set locations but you can't pop it in a pocket like the DR10L. Other things I like are the minimal settings - so fast setup is easy, not lots to do. And finally, I *really* like the On/Off + Record button, this may be a small point but the design of the button make it hard to mistakenly turn on or off recordings. Sound quality for the DR10L is nice and the included lav is OK, I tend to give my recordings 'character' in post anyway. So, overall, very pleased, nice to have a compact package that just works as advertised. :)

Hi Oliver, I really don't know much about audio, but why don't you like the auto levels on for this mic? Does setting the audio level give you better quality audio?

Personally I think auto levels jumps too much up and down on the DR10L, you’ll have a much more consistent signal if you just record at a certain level with backup recording

This is only for lav mics? Wired or wireless or both? How many lav inputs. Subscribed all the way from beirut lebanon.

It isn't exclusively for lavs, as any mic that has a 3.5mm jack could work with the DR10L, lavs are just the most common. I've used it with the Rode Videomic Pro before. One input, only wired! Thanks!!

Hi! So there's only one option with dual record and its already set to -6db.

There are actually two now! Maybe a new firmware, and it lets you choose between -6 and -12db :) Thinking the -6db is good enough, but -12db might be even safer

WOW I had no idea! Thanks for the heads up! Well, in that case, -6 will be perfect for controlled environments like an interview, and -12 would be better for walk and talks, or general just leaving it on someone for a less controlled environment. Great news

It is wort upgrading the firmware to v2.0: tascam.com/downloads/products/tascam/dr-10_series/6L_DR-10_series_Add-V2_vA.pdf (download: tascam.com/us/product/dr-10l/download) That update adds dual rec for poly mode, OFF/-6/-12dB setting for dual rec and mp3 recording. I'd also like to correct what you've said about poly mode. It's not for recording stereo sound - DR-10L is a mono recorder. If you plug a stereo microphone in, you'll only get left channel recorded. What poly mode actually does is creating a "stereo" container, where L and R tracks are the same. This is important to know. For those, who're looking for an on-body stereo recorder - take a look at Zoom F1. That recorder is a stereo recorder, although compared to DR-10L it's bigger and has no backup recording (there is a workaround for that though - use a special cable that takes a mono signal, gives it out to L channel and gives an attenuated version to the R channel, some of the lapel mikes are doing that themselves).

So I recorded a wedding with the DR10L and when I place it in Audition I get Warning: Non-Audio data exceeds 100 MB and will not be read. I'm not an audio guy, that's why I subscribe to you're channel. Could use you're help to bail me out of this one. Thanks

Ricco Swuave wow that’s interesting! How big is the actual audio file? Did you record in WAV? Can you play the audio outside of audition?

840,288 KB is the file size and it was recorded in .WAV format. Basically it's showing a large file size so I know that the data is there but it's showing 0:00 duration. I'm not able to play it any place. Unfortunately this was the "Money Shot" at the wedding. Doing a quick search, I see post that say you're not suppose to exceed 4GB.

Send me the audio file via WeTransfer. Go to enavant.wetransfer.com and it will send it directly to me. Let me try to recover it. It sounds like the data has been corrupted.

So, for now I was able to use a work-around. I converted the file from a WAV file to a MP3 and that’s working. I guess that clears up the fact that the data is there. Still unclear as to why it wouldn’t work. All the other files from that day are working perfectly and they too were recorded in the WAV format. I’m certain that it was something that I did but it would still be nice to know what that was so myself and others can avoid it in the future.
