In this first of two videos, I’m taking a look at what I like, what I don’t like, and what I think could be improved on the Mixcast 4 - Tascam’s new mixing console designed specifically for podcasting and live-streaming.
In part two, I'll unpack my own podcasting workflow and we'll dive into some sound samples using different mics and the built-in effects on the Mixcast 4. I'll also show you some of my favorite audio plugins.

I am in no way shape or form a consumer of such a high end piece of equipment, I have a SM7B and a GoXLR Mini and that's just for chatting with friends on Discord, doing Teams meetings at work and the occasional livestream. But I had to check out this video because I listen to "deep natter". I have to say that you did a good job here, I was interested in listening to what you had to say right up to the very end and I'm looking forward to part2 where you show the podcast setup. I sometimes imagen I would start a podcast but as Sean so eloquently put it in episode 37 "The hardest thing is figuring out what to say and talk about.". So thumbs up, this was good and interesting to watch and listen to. :)

I am a complete ignoramus when it comes to audio equipment, but I thought that the production and delivery of this review was fantastic. Really thorough without getting lost in the weeds, a nice balance of pros and cons, and all of the cons were accompanied by recommendations for improvement. I also liked how you called out use-cases where different tools might be better, underscoring that there really isn't one tool to rule them all. If I was in the market for something like this, this review would have been immensely useful. :-)

This review is fantastic! Right to the point and hits a lot of checkboxes for me. Thank you! I’ve been right in the middle of this vs the rodecaster pro. As much as I like the Mixcast 4 - for me the whole purpose of getting a podcast workstation is to get awesome quality audio “out of the box” with as little fiddling as possible - to focus on the content - to that end, while this is a great start for tascam in the category, the rodecaster pro seems like it’s been baking in the firmware and is just about right. I may go rodecaster pro given the potential risk in hedging on firmware updates. Thank you again.

Thanks very much, Chris. The Mixcast definitely gets a ton right and I think the few real issues I have with it can pretty easily get sorted via firmware updates. The only thing that might not be fixable is the transfer speed - that may be a hardware limitation. Fingers crossed.

Great job on this. I do have a couple of questions. 1) Let's say you record with two other people and save your work. You then transfer your recording to your Mac and open in Logic or GB. Are you getting three separate tracks or is all of the audio combined onto one track? 2)Can you explain how you would use this to record someone who's calling in or via Skype? I don't quite understand channels 5-7. Thank you.
@jefferysaddoris
@jefferysaddoris Жыл бұрын
Thank you. You end up with a Poly Wav file that pretty much any DAW will expand onto different tracks. Be warned that the Poly Wav contains ALL available tracks, not just the ones you recorded to. Also, the transfer rate from the Mixcast is very slow-you're better off popping the SD card out of the unit and into a dedicated reader. Channels 5, 6, and 7 are USB (to/from the computer), TRRS (or 1/4 inch stereo), and Bluetooth respectively. I record Skype to my Mac, not on the Mixcast using Audio Hijack by Rogue Amoeba. I've used it for more than a decade without incident. You could just as easily record to the Mixcast and Skype would be recorded to the USB channel. I finally started writing the followup to this video, which will cover some of this. I've been waiting for a new firmware update, but it doesn't look like we will get one anytime soon. Pity too, since with just a few tweaks, it could be even better than it currently is and could be THE unit to get at its price point.

Not that I'm aware of. The inputs are hard wired and there is no internal routing. For that, you may want to look at either the Rødecaster Pro II or the Mackie DLZ.

Did you ever do a part 2? Cant find it if it exists. Thanks for this vid. For me Mixcast is perfect. Still overkill actually. I currently use a Motu M2 and go direct live over zoom with audience to YT and FB, the only thing I needed that an interface does not is Compressor, so this is perfect for me and my use case!

Actually, Part 2 slipped through the cracks. It's all written, so I'll get it on the calendar. While I agree that it's a terrific device, I'm still hoping for a firmware update that actually addresses some of the things users (myself included) have been asking for.

What are your thoughts about this kind of solution vs a more traditional approach with an audio interface and all in the box processing and editing? How do you find your workflow benefits either way? I had come to the conclusion that units like these are only of real benefit if you were broadcasting live or wanted to cue audio during an interview. Is there more to it?
@jefferysaddoris
@jefferysaddoris Жыл бұрын
Actually, I think you're pretty spot on. Over several years, I recorded hundreds of podcast episodes using just a Zoom H5 (which I still use) and Skype without any issue. It all comes down to whether you need additional inputs and how much you want to do in post. Mixers like this and the Rodecaster Pro I and II allow you go get great sound out of the box (although the RCP II gives you WAY more fine grained control), but I tend to have a channel strip that I prefer in Reaper, so a lot of the built-in effects go unused. And since I record solo 98% of the time (my guests are nearly all remote), even the four XLR inputs are wasted. What I do like is the ability to record a phone call via the TRRS connector. That said, you can pick up a Zoom P4 for less than $200 and have 4 XLR inputs and a TRRS input in a device that you can toss in a bag, so it really depends on what you're after.

@vcsradio2805 that is too bad. Maybe a unit reset or firmware update will help. If you can record to card then you can connect a phone via USB c, otherwise you might be stuck.

Head over to Tascam to download the latest (1.2) firmware (tascam.com/us/product/mixcast_4/download). Enter mass storage mode on the Mixcast. Unzip the file you downloaded and and copy the firmware file (it will be called Mixcast4_xxxx.yyy) to the Utility folder on the Mixcast SD card. Exit mass storage mode on the Mixcast and turn it off. Hold down the Mark button while you turn it on again and it should start the update process. Hope that helps!

@@jefferysaddoris You didn't sound very enthusiastic... along with some of the issues or lacks of features you've raised (which were fair) I have a question for you however... why is it that ALL REVIEWERS including yourself only tested a MICs input for sound quality? While I understand it's the main feature of a Podcasting device but don't you feel it would have been great to differentiate from others and add something extra for us... ex... SIMPLY test a good old STEREO AUDIO MUSIC and see how it sounds... as far as I could tell... on mine... it was beyond terrible. Unless this has now been improved with updates.
@jefferysaddoris
@jefferysaddoris 2 жыл бұрын
@@DocFUNKist I can’t speak for everyone else, but I tested audio on a mic (and will do more in part two) because that’s the primary use case for the device - and I would imagine that it’s the way most people who buy it will use it. I also have no desire to make a 45-minute video that tries to be all things to all people. The Mixcast was not designed to be a music making tool, per se, but rather as a tool for podcasters and live streamers. For a device designed for specifically for music production, you would be better served to check out the Model 12 (basically, the same price point) which, from what I’ve seen, is a terrific choice as a studio hub. That said, every device has trade offs. As for not being enthusiastic, I suppose that’s a matter of opinion.
@DocFUNKist
@DocFUNKist 2 жыл бұрын
@@jefferysaddoris It is not an opinion when a sound is poor to everyone, it is called fact. Also... so a streamer and podcaster can't play music right? and I also believe testing the audio would literally takes 15 seconds (or less) to have a general opinion. My request was not in relation to MUSIC PRODUCTION but in music play during a podcast or stream or interview which is fair to say is beyond typical use case. I am not claiming it would be an audiophile level but a decent usable and it's nowhere near that. As for the model you've mentioned... No it is not terrific and it's also very poor since I've also purchased it and had to return it... funny enough that exact model also comes with channels designed for MICs / Instruments line level... not stereo level inputs. I has a couple of RCA that can take a stereo audio level but oh god... sounds like music inside a box. If reviewers started to make proper review and say things as they really are, product quality would improve... and since NOT A SINGLE REVIEWER thought about testing a BASIC Stereo sound on a SOUND Device then I'm left for words...
