Those straws seem to resurface every few years, remember there being a nesquik version when I was younger and my Mum said she used to be given something pretty much the same when she was in hospital as a child to get her to drink her milk. Do like the idea of compostable straws/plastics though

I've had something similar as well, but apart from there being some chemical in there I'm intolerant to, it only tastes fine the first sip. Take a sip and then take a sip a minute later and the balls have become the grossest mush ever.

Anyone care to explain why in a world that's eco conscious, they are stepping away from completely recyclable GLASS bottles to use something PLASTIC? I could understand if it was both biodegradable and made exclusively from kiwifruit skins (which is theoretically possible) but it's just plastic.
@mawe9878
@mawe9878 5 жыл бұрын
@@rhysobeirne3251 Well PET is recyclable, around here there's a deposit on plastic wine bottles so a lot of them get recycled. The major benefit is that plastic bottles weigh much less so you save a lot of fuel from transports. As long as you recycle the bottles I think PET bottles are actually more eco friendly than glass bottles.

When you are selling a juice, you want every bottle of that juice tasting the same. With other words: you want a secure supply of ingredients. "waste" is not a secure supply. If farmers would have a steady supply of waste products they would: a) not grow this kind of fruits anymore or b) find a buyer for the "waste" as a second grade food product or even food for animals. If you grow fruits just to waste them you will not be a farmer for long. If you realy work with waste products, your final products will vary now and then. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't support Flawsome if you want to reduce waste. A consumer talks with his wallet. If you care about the waste issue and you buy Flawsome, you are growing a market where the waste issue is the central message. "wastefull" companies will notice if they loose market share, especially if there are consumers who are willing to pay more for a better quality product. If there is a profit to be made, the industry will search for answers for these consumer issues. If they find an answer, they will be marketing their message to attract more consumers to their better quality product (with better margins). This way, a massage from a niche market can become mainstream.

@@dirkvandaele4466 not pretty enuf doesnt mean waste and i can assure u plenty of places use waste. Treetop apple juice comes from whats referred to as slurry. When i worked santation at a fruit peeler that supplied them with slurry they got everything that wasnt turned into slices or cubes. The waste was then ran to one single trough and then up through a hammer mill. Only part that became cattle feed was the fruit rejected by the photo sorting machine. Uses very bright lights and air. If most ppl saw the juice they drink before it was ran through various filters they would never drink it. Most fruit in cans the juice is even worse. Literally things that fall on the floor r turned into juice for canning. Also most of the fruits all come from the same factories no matter the brand.

Do people not realize that 100% of food waste is on the retail and consumer side? Ugly vegetables get chopped up and put in canned soups or frozen in bags and sold. Baby-cut carrots (often erroneously called baby carrots) are just the ugly carrots cut down. Ugly fruit becomes juice or concentrate or preserves. A lot of mascaras have beef byproducts in them from rendering plants. Modern industry uses EVERYTHING.

@@nickprime1116 They even feed your toilet water back to you. Frozen foods often they will select the best to freeze. This is especially true for meats, they freeze the best then try to sell the next best as fresh. Certain veggies like beans and peas, some things frozen whole would have some of the nicest ones the reason is to compensate for lost flavor in freezing...So choose the tastiest to begin with.

Nick well I work at the third biggest fruit/vegetable market/wholesaler/distributor/importer and exporter in my country and I can tell you that a lot of waste does occur on the distribution side. For instance about 4 lifts of 2 pallets each with 30 crates of 24 cartons of strawberries had to be thrown out at the end of the season recently (Southern Hemisphere). Because they just didn’t get moved fast enough. At the moment due to the oversupply of avocados and beans they’re basically giving away near-ripe and ripe stock (ripe stock is worthless to most buyers) of which a fair bit will become waste before it can be sold (it’s just not possible for these buyers to resell the quantities of produce they’re purchasing at the extremely reduced prices - hundreds of crates of 100 avocados at $3 USD a crate). While you might say this is retail side waste it’s really more of a problem with distribution.

I do like the apple thing.... I just wonder: flawed apples don't make it into (or out of) shops, but I'm 95% sure they DO make it into all kinds of apple juice - because why would companies waste the nice looking apples you can sell whole on juice and throw away wonky ones?! So this is nothing but marketing! (but if that means it is a smaller and possibly organic company, good thing)
@LudmilaT.
@LudmilaT. 2 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the juice companies typically buy fruit without a specific preference, they just take all the fruit they get, including nice ones. Apple farms send some apples to juice companies and some to stores (possibly they are even specialized to either one, just like there are different chickens for eggs and different chickens for meat). The store sorts what they want to put on the shelf, and the discarded fruits go to thrash. This company only gets the flawed ones. At least that's my understanding.

Nonetheless food does get thrown away, and it is waste. I volunteer in a kitchen making meals for asylum-seekers, and we get a lot of food from supermarkets which is fine but which people will no longer buy because it's not prime condition. If we weren't using it, it would be in landfill now. So if a juice company is using fruit & veg in that way, then they are preventing a certain amount of food waste, and that's a good thing.

Good point. I'd be more impressed if it was leftover fruit, like unsold fruit gathered from the supermarkets. No reason to think that would make bad juice, as long as it wasn't like falling apart rotten. About the Kiwi wine. There is a little visited region in NE India where the Apatani tribe (known for facial tattoos and nose plugs worn by the women there) have been using a local kiwi variety for ages to make wine. They basically just take the fruit, mix it with sugar and let it ferment. I tried it when I was there and it was really tasty. There is one small bottling company that markets it, but I doubt you can get it shipped internationally.

The milk straw with the composting plastic is a fantastic idea. I don't generally do anything to milk when I drink it, but the concept of reducing plastic in landfills (and our oceans) is always great. The coconut bacon is good in concept, but I find that actually getting a meaty flavour into vegan products can be the biggest challenge. Either way, having vegetarian and vegan options to replace some (or all) of our animal based staples is nice. I love love love the idea of taking the fruit and veg that can't go to stores (either by corporate policy or government regulation) and turning it into something delicious. It's like those fruity bars that use pulp from making juice. It cuts back on waste, which means that all the effort (and carbon footprint) that went into growing the produce isn't for nothing. The activated seeds and nuts are interesting. They're a healthier alternative to some of the more conventional snacks. I'm not sure how they'll fare in the long term, but I'm always down for a good nut. The kiwi wine, I'm not a fan of. Mostly because of a deadly allergy to kiwis. But I do like the idea of branching out in established industries. I had a peach wine at my cousin's that was incredible. I think offering a wider variety of wines is good. In any industry, innovation and competition are the most valuable sources of change.

In the US we have cardboard straws which are AWEFUL (they start to unravel into your drink). We also have corn based plastics which ARE compostable, though they require some sort of treatment first. I prefer potato ware which just has to be boiled to turn it back into potato byproduct mash. Though I'm not sure if they make straws. Long run, I'd prefer a reusable straw or just drinking from the glass.

There is a growing trend towards zero-waste farming that I don't see going away. In Australia Tasmanian apple farm Willie Smiths Apple Shed produces organic apples for the supermarkets, the apples that don't meet the standard are used to manufacture apple cider and a potion of the apple cider produced is used to create apple spirits (blanco and brandy). They've used this to both increase income and reduce the waste produced by the farm.

My cohorts are not big wine drinkers but I always like to have something to drink at out twice monthly meet ups. I found fruit wines are something that always goes over well.
